GYPZYQUEEN -> HANDSOME MEN... (6/17/2009 11:49:04 PM)

Do you think that more men on CM say they are handsome...good looking..nice looking etc
than the women saying they are beautiful..
cute etc...?

IF so...why?? confidence...gender socialization? ego?

Asherdelampyr -> RE: HANDSOME MEN... (6/17/2009 11:50:50 PM)

I saw the title and thought it was about me :P

I dunno, I have looked through tons and tons of profiles on here, and if there was any split I would say that, at least from what I have noticed, it seems that D types claim attractiveness more than s-types
Id say its about 75-25

as far as the reason behind it, my guess would be confidence
Most of the D-types I have met are the almost cocky-seeming totally at ease compleatly confident types
Most of the s-types I have met have been supportive, not nearly so cocky types, ergo a different type of confidence

As always I could be waaaaayyy off in left field.

GYPZYQUEEN -> RE: HANDSOME MEN... (6/17/2009 11:55:29 PM)

simply a case of jackassery perhaps for the D's

Asherdelampyr -> RE: HANDSOME MEN... (6/17/2009 11:56:25 PM)

I knew that term would catch on!

onlyfreelycaged -> RE: HANDSOME MEN... (6/18/2009 12:04:29 AM)

I've noticed this more most in the 30 plus age group...

ranja -> RE: HANDSOME MEN... (6/18/2009 12:48:00 AM)

I tend to be a bit suspicious of people who go about telling anybody that they think that they are beautiful or handsome...even if they put it in such a way that they say that others seem to think this of them...Really good looking people (in my eyes, and that is what counts) usually know that beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder so they would never come out with superficial and unimportant clap trap that actually makes them look quite silly.
I appreciate people who are comfortable with themselves, but i think vanity is a weakness.

a lot of Dominants are men and a lot of men seem to be vain...
i think overinflated insecurities some people have about themselves, like they think they are not beautiful and need to be reassured all the time...or even worse: all sorts of medical attention...is just as annoying and actually also very vain and that might be more of a sub trait? I dunno

IronBear -> RE: HANDSOME MEN... (6/18/2009 4:13:00 AM)

To a large degree this depends if the pictures of members are really them and up to date. It also depends on what each individual sees as beautiful and handsome. We each have our own standards to judging such things things. Added to this, I find the person id often beautiful inside, both males and females, no matter what their physical looks are. However, to answer the OP, I thinks the numbers of handsom males and beautiful women pretty well balances each other.

No, not especially.

I would have to go with confidence in most cases.

CatdeMedici -> RE: HANDSOME MEN... (6/18/2009 4:36:19 AM)

I think its people in general, if one is seen as attractive, its a "leg up" over the competition as they say.

divi -> RE: HANDSOME MEN... (6/18/2009 4:45:00 AM)

I think this because handsome sounds better then butt ugly ?

DarkSteven -> RE: HANDSOME MEN... (6/18/2009 5:02:39 AM)

Because you catch more flies with claims of honey than claims of vinegar.

Given that there are more men looking for women than the other way around this could be why the men are being upfront about something they may feel that women are looking for or they're probably thinking that it may give them an edge over someone else if they describe themselves as 'handsome'.

Here's a thought from a slightly different angle. Men are visual, they tend to go for looks -especially as an initial way of getting their attention. I know as a woman that when I was looking if I put up pics the focus started on my appearance and many times didn't go any farther. Therefore I didn't put up any pics and didn't list anything sexual or flirty in my profiles. That's not where I wanted the attention. So men could be just putting the description of their looks right out there in a straightforward way and women actually keeping it back. I can't speak for other women but that's exactly what I did to try to get the 'right' type of responses for me.

I also think it's the confidence factor, men are usually not as critical of themselves as women are.

*edited to finish a thought...

OttersSwim -> RE: HANDSOME MEN... (6/18/2009 6:14:00 AM)

A male forms his understanding of his body image at around age 16 or 17.   For the rest of our lives, even if we are 50 and have an acre of fat hanging around our belly and hair coming out of ears and back, that image of 16 is what we will see when we look in the mirror.  (Not really see, but it is amazing how the mind will justify what you actually see to that original image of 16)

Women are typically taught to see their flaws, cover them up, and be generally critical of their appearance.  As far as I can tell from all the women I know, their body image is never completely set.

And who the hell isn't pretty at 16?  Even the ugly have the bloom of youth...

Add that to general male bravado, and I would say Yes, it is more likely for a man to say he is handsome than a woman to say that she is beautiful.

beargonewild -> RE: HANDSOME MEN... (6/18/2009 6:22:31 AM)

For the most part that is true, though then there are a few like myself who always considered ourselves are just being average looking. We know we are neither butt ugly, nor are we handsome.

sparkelfairy -> RE: HANDSOME MEN... (6/18/2009 6:33:49 AM)

beauty is in the eye of the beholder and in some cases the mirror is cracked ..........but not all

I personally leave that up to others. I doubt you'll get statistically meaningful answers, though - men probably don't look at other men's profiles, and women probably visit few other women's profiles - the straight variety, that is. Those that do probably don't have a job or school to go to.

Very interesting question Gypzyqueen. I do not have a clue, but will read this thread to hear other's opinion.
