Like a lot of things, my pesonal guess is that this is most directly tied to a person's self confidence which is, in turn, largely driven by their current relationship status. The more I look, the more I find significant disparities in all types of behavior between those who have what they want and those who are still trying to find it.

There was my "gee duh" comment for the day. *laughs*.

This is good, lol!

From my experience, if you make assertions about how attractive you are, as a woman, you tend to invite certain reactions from a small percentage of men who want to "bring you down a notch"...it's sad but it's true.  Even women will do this to each other, we call it being catty though.  Best to let beauty stay in the eye of the beholder.

SimplyMichael -> RE: HANDSOME MEN... (6/18/2009 7:14:07 AM)

Men tend to overvalue their looks and women tend to undervalue theirs.

Partly that is because men are judged more on who they are and women tend to be judged more on what they look like.

SilverMark -> RE: HANDSOME MEN... (6/18/2009 7:18:17 AM)

I always thought it was due to women being more self-deprecating and Men being egotists....Lord knows I am vain enough for those who aren't!!!

HatesParisHilton -> RE: HANDSOME MEN... (6/18/2009 8:28:44 AM)

I think the cultural aspect should be considered.  And other demographics.  I mean, you see more of the profiles claiming "handsome" from (where I sit) fairly anglo-saxon-based (and Americano-centric) sources and backgrounds.

Of course, as someone who's painted all manners of folks ranging from "Gorgy" to "Fugly", of someone has "Handsome" on their profile, m immediate reaction is "As compared to whom?  To what?"

I mean, I heard some 20 something bimbette blathering about how hot SETH ROGAN was.  And no, I was not on acid when I heard this.

SETH ROGAN?

If Seth Rogan ever becomes an acceptable candidate for "handsome" by more than even 15% of the population, we need to change the definition of the word or simply strike it from all lexicons.

I'm sexy to myself and that is almost all that matters. I know I have flaws... and it is these flaws that make me special! Now someone who is attracted to my flaws on the other hand...

Great, now I have a song stuck in my head. I'm too sexy for my skin... to sexy for my skin....

okay now.... here are some more imaginary two cents and I am out on this discussion.

Do you think that more men on CM say they are handsome...good looking..nice looking etc
than the women saying they are beautiful..
cute etc...?

IF so...why?? confidence...gender socialization? ego?

i'd say narcissism breeds dominance of that's any sort of clue.

I actually don't know the correct answer to this post...but...this morning I woke up, realizing I'd gotten better looking as I slept.

(It's not an altogether uncommon occurrence).

RLMK -> RE: HANDSOME MEN... (6/18/2009 5:57:13 PM)

I never heard a man refer to himself as handsome... I can't recall ever reading a man's profile either, however. Different culture, I guess -- we made fun of "pretty boys", a man's valued more for strength, skill, reliability, etc... of course, "prettiness" doesn't win, or get any work done, so that could be part of it...

NihilusZero -> RE: HANDSOME MEN... (6/18/2009 6:26:17 PM)

Not sure what good telling people those things is if you already have images available.

It may also just be a matter of advertising and, to a degree, biological gender. It is, after all, male peacocks who flaunt the feathers.

kallisto -> RE: HANDSOME MEN... (6/18/2009 6:36:07 PM)

I've never known a man to call himself handsome. Now maybe that's saying something about me or the men I know [:)]

But to answer seriously, I think it all comes down to self confidence.   IMO, men typically tend to be more self confident about their looks than women.    Maybe I've missed some threads from the men coming on here and talking about their looks (physical appearance) and being dissatisfied.   I do know that us women do that.   Sometimes we need the reassurance that we are beautiful or need to hear from others just what they see  in us.

Is is upbringing?  Is it society?  I certainly don't have a clue.  Just an opinion.

Asherdelampyr -> RE: HANDSOME MEN... (6/18/2009 6:40:23 PM)

I refer to myself as sexy as hell, it comes a lot from a childhood where I was praised solely for my looks, so now I see it as my best feature.

Ialdabaoth -> RE: HANDSOME MEN... (6/18/2009 9:02:24 PM)

I don't advertise as attractive, athletic, confident, or rich, because I am none of those.

I mostly just try to snark on how damned creative and innovative I am, and hope that works.

(checks his watch)

Any minute now, ladies...

I personally leave that up to others. I doubt you'll get statistically meaningful answers, though - men probably don't look at other men's profiles, and women probably visit few other women's profiles - the straight variety, that is. Those that do probably don't have a job or school to go to.

heartcream -> RE: HANDSOME MEN... (6/19/2009 4:09:38 AM)

There is another dating site that I participate in the forums and there was something about this and I was quite surprised how many people voted themselves in as attractive and others telling them they looked so much younger than their years. I might go to their profile and mostly think the poor things were deluded. To me, they looked their age, they were not hideous by any means but no real lookers either. One or two were really fabulous and young looking.

Quite a few men's profile's say something like "Others say I am good-looking, I have been told I am, My mother thinks I am." Then there are ones who emphatically say they are good-looking and state she should be too, I mean some down-right out-there with how freaking fantastic they look. From the pictures they do have that sort of breath-taking charisma.

I dont tend to look at chicks profiles, but some I have looked at do state they are all that and a ball of wax. The pictures they have are pretty smoking too.

Do you ever notice how you can see a few profile pictures in a row and one will waft off one kinda vibe and then you click on the next and you are like "Dang, that does not look like the same person.

I think in person I would look vastly different then my pictures, different lights, different moods etc.

I would wager men tend to talk about how good they look more than women. Maybe women and men try to show how they look in pictures about the same. You know the shots of naked man-body, a torso with no head. Or a woman with no head or just her naked boobs or ass or something.

Some people have less or more consciousness, and sometimes the way we talk about ourselves offers up a host more clues than the writer knew was being read.

Ageing like Sean Connery must be the dream of many men. I had a great-great uncle, and he was as he was over the age of 80 still handsome and attractive. But he was strikingly beautiful as young men, i have seen photos. He was in the cavalry and had even in his high age, all the old movements. As my aunt died and he went into cared living, the ladies fighted over him, he was quickly snatched from the market.

Yes i know they have more women there than men, but believe me he was really special.
