"Please list any and all, current personal or business websites, web pages or memberships on any Internet-based chat rooms, social clubs or forums, to include, but not limited to: Facebook, Google, Yahoo, YouTube.com, MySpace, etc.," the City form states. There are then three lines where applicants can list the Web sites, their user names and log-in information and their passwords. The requirement raises questions concerning applicants' privacy rights.  ---> article continues here

So? What's the problem with that. It's for a CITY job...they are well within their rights to ask for anything that might reflect badly on the city itself.

Why not put a bug in the bedroom- 24-7- a cam on the inside of the house- ..no. A persons private life is private.  Alot of posts can be taken out of context.

Those idiots.

It's a common practice to check out applicants' MySpace, etc. pages.  Three minutes with a search will find if they're there.

Asking for passwords is like asking to go through their personal mails.

Unless the city has specific criteria on what constitutes the high moral standing they cite, they're setting themselves up for a suit.

Anyone with half a brain will leave this blank.  The big question is when someone gets fired and the employer makes the claim that it was due to them omitting info on the app.

Are you sure?

I have a yahoo group- that is members only.   (well a few of the actually)  But the one has sensitive posts in it. I will fricken delete the entire group if this becomes the custom in the US.   My people came there- to rant- amongst friends, and I promised them- that I would not let trouble come into the group.

Not a chance. On that members only group- I will delete it all-- sooner then expose my people to harm!   (we spun off of a depression support group in 2002)

It's the fucking internet. If you think that having a 'members only' limitation is going to keep out someone who wants in...you are living more in a dream world than I thought.

Geesh..wake the fuck up...if it's on the internet...its public...period. Nothing private about it.

It's ridiculous, but the trend started with urine samples and credit checks for certain jobs and once that was accepted apparently you have to make your life an open book to a potential employer.

Personally....no job is worthwhile having if I was required to surrender my passwords to an employer. What I do in my personal life is my business and does not concern my employer.

Well, yes it is.

Do I know you or anything about you from your screen name?

Nor would I unless you gave me access to specific information, which this city is requiring.

Where does the line get drawn between a person's private and professional life?

I wonder if laughing until I'm blue in the face would knock me out of the running for the job...

They will continue to ask for this information until someone files suit against them for doing so unfortunately.....is it right of them to ask for, no I do not think so and would not supply it myself either, it is none of their business and wrong of them to even think it is.

This is why I am not on Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, etc.  What I do is my own thing.

It's not hard to find if you know where to look...personally, it does not matter to me one bit...the city here has files on me that are thicker than most terrorists...so does the state, so does the federal govt...so do a couple of other agencies....big fucking deal. If I wanted privacy to be absolute in regards to my life, I would live a life guaranteed to accomplish that.

Grow up pahunkboy...and stop living in a dream world.

edited to add:

I guess I am really surprised that people think their life is private. My question would be; for those who raise the biggest stink about this...what the fuck are you hiding?

I would have to file this under the "just try it" category. One of those things like, wish they tried that shit on me.

The real shame of a topic like this is how many people will just roll over like a good sheep and comply.

The websites are public and therefore viewable to the potential employer.  The passwords however, most certainly are private information.

Odd most of these sites tell you SPECIFICALLY NEVER to give out your personal log-in information.

An NO it is not Legal to Require you to give that information.

It IS a Violation of the Privacy Act and Discrimination and I can't wait till the City is sued for not hiring someone after they volunteer that info.

Anything I don't do while at work is PRIVATE and None of my employers business.

It's not a matter of compliance; it's a matter of facing reality.

There is not a single person in the US who does not have a 'profile' that is obtained by the govt...sorry people, but there it is.
To sit here and get upset because you think this is something 'new'...get a grip, it's been going on for longer than most of us have been alive.
