OMG!!! When you announced the engagement it seemed like the wedding was so far away. I can't believe that it's almost here!!! Whoooohoooooo!!!

Wish I could help you with ideas but I am rather like you when it comes to music.

DV and Fox,

Congratulations! The Big Day is almost here. If you look around for some local DJ's you could sample their play lists for weddings and explain the circumstances that create the challlenges, i.e. the church people, the outdoor venue, etc.

Some listening and sampling and recording will likely all go into the mix. If you have a friend or relative who has these skills even better.

DV, I don't know your feelings on it but as our wedding dance, some dumbass jerk insisted that the DJ play "The Lady in Red" by Chris Deburgh. I actually tried to fight it because I positively loath that song but people insisted because my wedding dress was red. So now it's stuck in my head that a song that I can't stand and literally hate is "our" wedding song. Bleccccccccchhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Whatever you pick, just keep it to stuff you LIKE. You will remember this fantastic, awesome, miraculous day for the rest of your life.

DV, those who want to dance, will. Those who don't, won't. The most important thing is that the whole day is what you and fox want. Play some oldies, current dance, and for fun, maybe the chicken dance or achey breaky heart. In my region of the US, if a few polkas were not played, some folks would be disappointed. I can't say the same thing for your area. If you want an even better idea, ask yours and fox's family members from a variety of age groups as to what kind of music they would like to hear.

PA polks on WVIA 44 PBS- and of course- the oldie. Lawrence Welk. I was working at the group home when they showed me the chicken dance. What a riot!!!!!!!

A good mixture of music is a safe bet. Current, old, fast and slow. I'm guessing the yodeling and clogging aren't going to be hits (sorry phhunkboy) Here's a link to a site that shows a list of "most requested songs" at a reception.

An old school buddy of mine is a DJ, and he has gotten me access to thier music database, with suggestions and such. Woo!

For now, I am taking down all the suggestions everyone has made, and they are going on my list (even the silly ones) and we are going to download a bunch of them and see which we like and which wont work. The Macarena has made its way into the list... thats Fox's request, and im sure there will be a few more.

Our wedding song, by the way, is Everything I Do I Do it for You by Bryan Adams. Its the song we were dancing to when I proposed. : )

And peppermint, yes it is rushing up like nobodies business. Thankfully I have a lot of really wonderful and helpful friends to keep me from losing my mind. I am getting to do what I hear people all the time telling me they wish they did... I am creating my dream wedding. The perfect spot, the perfect location and shots for photos, and of course the perfect groom.

I always have to get help planning wedding music. My first inclination is to play Queen's "Another One Bites The Dust" as they head up the aisle after the vows. My wife always finds one thats better. Strangely, all the grooms seem to find it an amusing idea and all the brides seem to have the same angry tendancies as my own wife. Hmmmmm

For a little comic relief, you can play "He's the Man" and "She's the Woman" by Sean Morey. Good to play during the dive for the bride's garter and while organizing the bouquet toss.

Just came back 'cause I realized that the actual names of the songs are "The Man Song" and "The Woman Song".

during the ceremony and reception, i told the dj we hired that i'm picking music/song that you wouldn't consider traditional. for example my oldest (who is my maid of honor) will be walking down the aisle to Mad Man's theme. i'm walking down the aisle to David Bowie's Life on Mars.

for the reception, i've discarded the sappy love songs and went instead with a long list of rock, metal, some ambient to samba bossa music like Billy Idol's White Wedding, The Clash's London Calling, Echo & the Bunnymen's Sugar Kisses.

the trick is picking music that reflects the theme of your wedding. as you can see - my wedding is more geared towards a rock-n-roll one (with some classic oldies by Dean, Sinatra, Mathis etc tossed in there).
