For me, it was my first car. 1963 Chevy Impala SS, 327 with a 4-barrel, tuned headers, dual exhaust with cutouts, Powerglide transmission, original equipment spinner hubcaps. Wide tires, rockhard suspension, and the steering box from a 64 Corvette, handled like it was on rails. Not exactly a muscle car, it was built to drive like a sports car, and the only car I ever owned that handled as well was a 69 Jaguar XKE that I bought a few years later. I loved that car. Bought it for 300 bucks in 1974, and owned it until some cop who was late for work lost control of her car in a snowstorm; hit me head on and totaled it. Broke my neck, which healed eventually, but driving's never been the same since I lost that car. I'd give quite a lot to have that ride back. So. What's yours?

1962 Chevy II convertible with red leather seats...it was HAWT and my first car! Drank a quart of oil for every gallon of gas though...

'67 Mustang fastback, maroon with black interior, 289 high performance engine w/4 speed....not a muscle car either but she ran like a deer. I got rid of her when the door hinges started to rust out and a body man told me that it would cost more than the car was worth to fix...it was 6 years old at the time....sighhhhhhhh.

76 Chevy Nova 350 smallblock that had a holly 4 barrel carb. Used to be able to drop it into drive from neutral and leave tire marks forever. Only car I've ever owned that was just plain fun.

Here in St. Paul, this is the weekend of the Back To The 50s classic car show, and on Friday and Saturday nights the cars cruise up and down University Avenue in St Paul, the old "strip". And we all sit in lawn chairs, watching and wishing. That's what got me thinking of this thread. My favorite car of the night was a 67 Mustang, kind of a gunmetal gray with black trim. Best-looking car on University Avenue tonight, for my money.

lol....GQ....i crashed my Mustang the night of my 21st birthday, i hit a parked car and moved it 15 feet lol.....ahhh the good ol' days.

the one i learned to drive in. 65 mustang, silver blue. ran like a champ AFTER the overhaul.... it was originally my parents' car, they bought it new. then it went through a flood in '79, had water up to the windows. like i said, ran great after the overhaul. [:)] i'd like to have mama's car now...'92 mustang cobra, the limited edition one. that is AFTER its had some cosmetic work...some DUMBASS left it sitting outside for 3 years unused. whimpers but its going to my brother and i already accepted that. Still got my 89 Audi 100E. And I REFUSE to give it up. ;) If I had to pick another car I had though, would have been our 1984 BMW 318i. Little econo-box, but reliable as the day is long, fun to drive, cute, durable... Just, got to be too small for the household. Oh yeah, I'd own another now though if I could.

It wasn't a performer but it ran like a top and got better gas mileage than a Hybrid - my 1987 Chevy Sprint (which was made by Suzuki). My ex-husband totalled it and then nearly totalled my other car in the same week. I also sincerely miss my 1971 International Travelall - except is got about 8 feet to the gallon.

Porsche 968. Bought her right around my 19th birthday. Coral Red, tan interior. Looked gorgeous -- probably one of the most feminine shaped cars I'd ever seen, handled like a dream. She pulled all the way to the rev limiter, trail-braked perfectly, and sounded, well, something like a VERY happy woman. If I drove her, she went over 100 that day, that was an agreement we had. She was hand-built, so everything could be fixed and maintained fairly easily. I could even fold down the back seats, and put hay and horse feed in the back -- she also crossed more streams, and went down more dirt roads than most SUVs... She had soul, and could be a vicious, unforgiving b@tch if you screwed up bad enough, but spoke lovingly of every ripple and pebble in the road, and could do amazing things if your head was working right that day.

I have had some very cool cars. The one I was going to keep forever, but I only had it 11 years was the Green Pig: 1970 Plymouth Fury III with every bell & whistle available. Anything mechanical that needed doing on that baby I could do. Then there was the (I think) 59 Cadillac Sedan De Ville, name of Cosmo D. Cadillac. When the front seat was pushed all the way back, I could slouch in the back seat & stretch my legs all the way out & never touch the front seat. I loved taking that boat places that people riding with me didn't think it would fit & watching them panic. [8\|] I had a 55, a 56 & a 57 Chevy. One was a wagon. Then there was the 67 Charger Fastback named Faithful Kato. The latest one I loved driving because it handled so well was the Mitsubishi Eclipse, I think about a 2000 model. Her name was Bertha Big Butt. Lost my mind one day & traded her in on a minivan. Ugggghhh!!! At least it had heated leather seats & a great sound system. The car I learned to drive in was a 46 or 48 Plymouth--depends who you ask as to which year it was. Three on the column, complete slug. Oooooh!!!! I almost forgot! My first husband bought a drag car back in the early 60's, back when they were stock bodies. It was a 56 Merc with a 64 Ford engine in it. That puppy could flat out move!! Early days of freeways in my neck of the woods, so not much traffic & I could really let her out. That was probably my all time favorite car. I had a 59 Jaguar sedan for a minute. It had a slide shift lever on the wooden dash.

A 1976 Peugeot 504D. No, I am not kidding. The hippie-chicks got all creamy at the sight of it, and the French can engineer a sedan for fucking in. It broke a lot, but it was fun while it lasted, and I learned a lot about working on cars. I'd put the stripped frame in the front yard and grow roses in it.

I never had a Beetle. But I did have a 59 Karmann Ghia convertible which friends painted in day-glo colors, flowers & stuff. Oddly, I only got stopped once while driving it & that was back in the day when the police weren't amused by those of us of the hippie persuasion.
