Everywhere I have lived I have heard African American's call each other "Niggers". Indianapolis, Los Angeles, Chicago and countless other cities. Black people also call each other this on TV shows, movies and songs. Is this such a surprise to you? I don't agree with it, but from what I understand, it is said in "friendship and brotherhood", not said in an inflammatory way. But of course, like all words, it depends on the context of which it is being used.

Edited to Add: I lived in Watts in 1969, if you know your history (Not directed at anyone), then you know that the ramifications of living in that area, during that time period, was to say the least scary as hell. We were the only white family living there at the time and I can tell you, that I had no problem emulating what I saw and heard. If my childhood friends called each other "Nigger", than you can bet, I did the same. I knew no difference. It was not a bad word then, and really shouldn't be a bad word now. But it can be.

i live in TinyTown, USA...farms, wheat fields and cow poop...and i hear it out here from one Aferican American to another. It is never spoken/received in a derogatory manner.

aww...thanks Pure, but the patriotic thong came to a tragic end (no pun intended).
See...last 4th of July some damn jackass needed a wick to set off his fire crackers and he thought that piece of butt floss would work well. Problem was...i was wearing the damn thing at the time...

i now sing the song...

Status: offline 		i think Blaakman's point was that it's common for African-American's to say it, He(much like i) hasn't really heard it used outside of the US.

That being said, Blaakman, Jonnie lives in the UK...where it is sadly used amongst black people...though definately on a smaller scale than here in the US. (though are there black people in Wales??? Wow...we get around!)

i hate that the "N" word discussion even got introduced in an already ridiculous thread....but C'est la Vie!

Status: offline 		Okay. . . I am going to take a stab at what I think the original question was trying to get across.

A large percentage of the black population of the US is registered Democrat and votes Democrat.

Democrates are seen as "less patriotic" than Republicans.

Republicans are more likely to have/wear all the "flag" t-shirts.  (lapel pins. . . bumper stickers. . . et cetera . . all that stuff that proclaims ones patriotism)

Obama is a black Democrat and has been elected President.

So. . . is it now more "acceptable" (likely maybe) for/that black Democrats would be wearing "flag" t-shirts.

Although I am not the one who used the word to begin with, I would like to apologize to you, Tulip for my part in this thread. I was answering Blaakmann's question and hope that I have not offended him or you, my friend. It was not meant to be disrespectful in any way. *Hugs*

PA thinks since Obama was elected maybe patriotisnm will come into "style" evidenced by wearing shirts.
Lots of assumption going on.
A)wearing a shirt bearing the flag means a person is patriotic.
B) Because of the history of Black people in this country we must be less patriotic.
C) President Obama is the Oracle for Black Americans...and somehow makes it more "acceptable" to be patriotic because we've been given "something" by his being elected.
D)Red,white, and blue striped shirts are now de rigeur and one simply can't be seen leaving home without one....

Status: offline 		Tulip, I have no idea.  My first thought in reading the Op was, "What the hell kind of question is that."  To be honest, I do not pay that much attention to what other people are wearing, PERIOD.  To pay attention, I would have to actually care.  And I don't. 

I have been following this thread, and just thought that I would post my guess as to what PA was trying to get across.  I still cannot figure out why it matters.  Why care about what other people are wearing if you are not buying their clothes.
