i cannot agree with this statement. ImNSHO O/one can most certainly change the way O/ne feels, in any given moment. It is sometimes referred to as intellect over emotion. As an example - i would say that it is impossible to feel depressed and exercise at the exact same time. Or to feel depressed and smile even. Ever see a depressed person smiling?

I, Like the others have to disagree.... I am a clinically depressed person... have been diagnosed... However, I never wanted anyone to know about it... especially my son... So yes, I do smile, even when I am crying on the inside... And working out depresses me, b/c I think of why I am working out... because I am fat, and need to lose weight or i may die... so, see, I smile, and exercise while I am depressed... sorry, But it happens...
I also would like to say, that i wasn't talking about feelins like that... I meant beliefs...

Wow. Of course. Do you know how well some depressed people are able to mask?

Well, i guess not. i do know that i have suffered depression off and on (at times clinical but that was some time ago) and i cannot think of a single time that i ever had a genuine smile while i was feeling "under it." Maybe i should have added the word genuine before the word smile. (i think that i always assumed that when i smiled while depressed - anyone observing could tell it was a "fake" smile, as the underlying emotional pain was quite obvious).

My offer for the dollar bet stands ;-) Just need an open-minded gink. (That's one dollar U.S. - Ohhhh Yeaaaa!!)

Yes, a depressed person can smile, and usually does so often. I am diagnosed with clinical depression, and it is hard. It has been a long and tough fight. It is not going to go away. The best I can do is control it. And one of the biggest problems with dpression is negativity. Got to step back and take a look at it. Not pleasant, but a first step.
I think (I hope) what seaturtle was trying to say is that there are ways to combat the depression, even when it is clinical. The mind is a powerful thing, and certain physical activities can move the depressed person into a more positive frame of mind. The catch-22 is that one has to get over the hump. The lack of energy and the feeling of "this is more than I can handle" makes it very difficult to take the first baby steps. I cannot take the medication, so I have had to fall back on other more natural remedies. Such as bio-feedback, affirmations, yoga, breathing tecniques, hypno-therapy, journaling, and just keeping Myself involved in activities that create good feelings. It is a lot easier to just crawl into bed and pull the covers up over your head, than to be pro-active.
It is a disease, and it is not curable. As already stated, it is treatable, and some of the treatments include things that seaturtle brought up.

Yes. GoddessDustyGold,

Thank You Ma'am, that is in essence what i was trying to say. And i hope i was not being so flip as to imply that it is an easy thing to deal with.

In truth (again mho) - the only thing one need to tell a depressed person is "cheer up" - in other words that is all they really need to know. However, i understand that side of the coin, and when i have been there and someone said something like that to me, it often seemed as though they were speaking to me in a foreign tongue.

It is possible to "trick the brain" into causing one to feel better rather quickly, and that is an area of fascination for me. Wanting to "trick the brain" or feel better in a time of need, well that is the crux of the problem is it not?

I guess if one shares their own experiences and those experiences run counter to yours then it's considered 'negativity?'

Well Michael, in all fairness, that last post by me was almost a set-up to illicit negativity. Not intended or desired, but expected none the less. i expect more as a matter of fact.

MsIncognito,

my reference to "negativity" in my post was in direct response to michael's comment below.

i know, more negativeness from the annoying brat in the center row...LOL

i do hope it is clear that i was not pinning a label on anyone here. i am all for freedom of thought, action, and speach ;-)

how did we get from Michael is a nice guy to depression can be treated??? oh, yeah... now i remember, someone took what i had to say, completely wrong.... But it's ok, seeing people argue makes me smile.... but wait, I can't do that... I'm depressed.... so now wait, I'm confused... I'm depressed, But I want to smile... So maybe, I'm really not depressed... or maybe I'm delusional on top of my depression b/c I really DON'T want to smile, I just think I do.... Sheesh... I wish that someone would tell me what I should do....

Just keep smiling while it lasts - i am going to go away from this thread, and of course wish everyone the very best, as always!

By the by - melancholy is my personal favorite feeling.

RavenMuse, I thought I was actually going to make it through the day without coffee sputtered all over the laptop!!! How wrong I was!

PS: Michael, I agree with the others. If every person here held exactly the same opinions and used exactly the same words to get their point across...welll...I'd be going elsewhere. Personally, I like variety. Glad you're on CM.

It's not just depressed people who smile to mask their feelings. At times (and you need to have known me for years to pick when I am angry.. cold killing anger and am close to lethal actio). I do a Jimmy Carter and just smile..... It is the firsdt thing I used to teach security officers .. The Plastic Smile .. it comes out when you are being abused and an additional politeness too. No, smiling is ot justy for happy folk it is one of the best masks for anger, hurt, heartbrake and potential suidides..... Hint: If the eyes aren't smiling there is something wrong....
