FR, after read thru

I love cookbooks, too . ... .

Laurel's Kitchen was a profound experience for me when I first read it a coupla decades ago, with it's emphasis on whole foods & extensive discussion of basic processes . . . .. Even after I became a 'sinfully lapsed' vegetarian (lol) I still find much of its discussion useful . . . . .

I invested in Julia Childs' The Way To Cook a few years ago, which I read for the basic processes more than for the specific recipes . . . . . I can remember when I was an um watching Julia Childs & Graham Kerr with my mother, & I learned to cook from my mom's collection of French cookbooks . . . .. .

My mom was anti-processed food long before it was fashionable, & in my um-hood I could only have the sweets that I cooked myself. For instance, she would buy the ingredients for cookies, but not packaged cookies. I got very good at making simple puddings, & baking cookies & cream-puff shells (chou paste) . . . . . . .

the better homes & gardens cookbook.  i have the battered (beaten up, not ready for frying) copy that my mama got as a wedding present (47 years ago) that has her little notations aside some of the recipes.

i also like the slow cooker cookbook i got a while back...although it has a bit too much "start with a can of condensed soup" in it.  (written by campbell's so what did i expect?)

most of my cooking comes from a collection of handwritten recipe cards.  :)

My family is by no means short on cook books, for me my favourite is the best of bridge series as well as the joy of cooking as not only does it have great recipes it also has lots of tips and hints

we travel to a tiny Amish town in Ohio and always stop at a Mennonite restaurant. They publish their own cookbook (available there only, i think) and it is awesome...tried and true family recipes!!

I also use the heck out of The Joy Of Cooking.

I thought the "basics" were variations of store brand cereal.  "Gourmet" would be top shelf cereal.

Grain-free Gourmet, Nourishing Traditions, the Frugal Gourmet, and the cookbook (three =huge= ring-bound volumes) from my French cuisine/patissierie course are the ones I use most often (if you don't count the technical books I use to attempt cheese-making *grins*)

I grew up with my mom using on old Betty Crocker cookbook from the 1950's.  When she died, I took it, and it's crumbling and falling apart, but I love the old basic recipes that are in it.  For a wedding gift, I received a basic Better Homes and Gardens cookbook that I used quite often, and I stuff recipes that friends have written down for me in the back of it, because I like to keep the original paper with my friends' handwriting on it for the memory.

I like Rachael Ray stuff because she's quick and simple and down-to-earth.

My obsession is with appetizer and finger-food cookbooks, though.  I must have about 20 of them, and can't resist a new one when I see it.  Someday I'm going to actually have people over and make some of them....

I also love the "church supper" type cookbooks, because they have the best "comfort food" style of casseroles and dishes, and especially desserts.Yum.

I have a weakness for cookbooks. I will buy one for just one recipe in it.
My favorites are the Barefoot Contessa series. I have yet to find a recipe in them that I haven't liked.

I'm a huge fan of the ones they have at restaurants.

Count me in with the Nourishing Traditions fans.... I love that book! Anything from the Weston A. Price Foundation or Sally Fallon. Whole Foods for the Whole Family, Good Housekeeping's Illustrated Cook Book, Betty Crockers red checked cook book, a number of the cookbooks from Pampered Chef, More with Less, and a large number of Amish/Mennonite cookbooks. (Of course, being Mennonite might have something to do with that.) I also have a large number of recipes that have been handed down and the world's best hazelnut cheesecake recipe that came from Vincent Price when he guest-starred on the Johnny Carson show in the early 70's. Yep, creepy as he could be, Vincent was one helluva cook!

Now.... off to the Farmers Market to see what handcrafted breads, cheeses and nummies I can find.....

Saturday is "market day" for me, too!!!

Right now, my absolute favorite cookbook in the world is in my father's possession. My mother had a cookbook, handed down from my great-grandmother to my grandmother, while they were still in Italy, called La Cochina. That, and a set of translucent porcelain sandwich plates and cups, are my own treasures from my mother's things.

For my birthday this past month, my mom sent me the "Family Bible"...a copy of Betty Crocker's Cookbook from the early 60's.  What an amazing treasure...and time trip!  In between recipes calling for crisco and margarine (in large amounts), I found our childhood favorites...brownies and chocolate devil's food cake.  Also, tons of hand-written notes from both my mom and grandma, some recipes I haven't had since the last family reunion I attended when I was 10.

I've found that some of the best recipes/cookbooks are the one's we create.
