I spent years working in the city with obnoxious buffoons in smart suits and white collars and further years working alongside pink shirted large gutted salesmen.
Penguins don't interest me.
Give me a man with a hemp sweater or a well worn comfortable t-shirt and his favorite denims any day.

This is, in a way, a twist on the "looks and weight" thread in the "ask a master" forum.

I'd like to think that I'm pretty opened minded about appearances.  I would rather chat with someone first ... get to know them on the inside before seeing a picture.  Not to say that I don't have some standards.  But I put a lot of emphasis on character and less on weight, hairline, etc.

So over the weekend I was chatting with a really great guy.  In a way this was sort of a "Green Acres" experience.  He was a rural guy, and me, liking to be near a city.  And because we are so far away and both tied to our lives, it would never work.  But surprisingly we got along.  After a full day of chatting he showed me a picture of himself.  There were parts of him that I found appealing ... but the thing that really bothered me was that he seemed to care less about his appearance.  For one, there was the beard.  I actually prefer a man with a beard, but it should be trimmed.  If a guy looks like Grizzly Adams or a guy from ZZ Top, it turns into a negative.

The other sticking point ... his clothes.  He was wearing a t-shirt, torn shorts, and a baseball cap.  Now, this is a big guy ... and his choice of clothes just accentuated his gut.  I've seen pictures of heavier guys, and know that if they wear certain kinds of clothes (e.g., button down shirts) the belly doesn't become the focal point.  The shorts were the worst.  They were so torn that I could see his underwear ... a lot.  I delicately talked to him about the picture, how it wasn't very flattering ... that if he was trying to get laid he might want to put his best foot forward.  His reaction:  (1) He was dressed like every other guy who lives around his area and (2) If I had a problem with his appearance than I was being shallow.  (For what it's worth, he bathes regularly so there shouldn't be a hygiene issue.)

I pride myself on being open minded.  But I do have an issue with a guy who doesn't care enough to present himself in a favorable light.

So, ladies, am I off here?  And guys ... would you be attractive to a woman who seemed to be clueless about appearance?

Some may judge you as an attractive women. some may judge you to be a tease and a slut, while others will not judge your appearance at all, perferring to find out how you think and feel about issues they believe to be important. I believe one should dress for the occasion and do their best to be seen in a positive light, understanding that people will, be it right or wrong, attempt to pass judgement.

She showed me a picture she had received. They guy was in a stained T shirt, shorts with no underwear (peen fully visable), holding a 40, showing his missing teeth and greasy hair while sitting in a lawn chair.

Hey, it was my first 40 of the morning! And I thought she would have been impressed with my peen!

Seriously, we all have our ranges of desireability; We are all flawed and imperfect, but I don't think it is asking too much for people to make an effort at least.
It costs nothing to be neat and clean; it doesn't take a heroic effort to maintain a healthy diet and modest amounts of exercise.
When we go out, I make a conscious effort to be as presentable as possible, in part because I want Kim to be proud of her man. She does likewise, which makes a subtle statement of love and committment to me.

Me, I'm too skinny not to wear tailored suits. Anything else just looks like an eight-year-old wearing his dad's clothes.

But put me in a sharp black tailored suit, and I can command legions with but a gesture.

... huh.

Time to scrounge up some material.

It's called multitasking, Ron [:D]

kiwisub12 -> RE: Dress for success (10/6/2009 5:39:27 PM)

Strange - men aren't supposed to be good at multitasking. Sure you aren't really a woman???????

and for the record - my Sirs' profile pic is him in a tux - of course he is a DJ, so he wears one a lot.

and when i met him for the first time, he had glasses twenty years out of date, and shirt that i would never choose for him. I had a split second of "ohmygod", decided to not be so shallow (don't you love that word!), and went and joined him.
Best thing i have ever done in my life.

Of course, his penis wasn't hanging out, he didn't have a beer in his hand, he had showered, and there were no holes in his clothes. Hmm, maybe i am more shallow than i thought. Dammm!

It all goes to show you that sometimes appearances aren't the sum of all.

All I gotta say is I can't respect a man who expects others should lower their standards to accept (accept in this case meaning find him attractive) someone who doesn't care about his appearance or health. Maybe the women there don't mind, but apparently you, and others, DO.

Your picture is not bad at all. Those sunglasses are great, tee shirt is good, little of the boat I can see is nice, and the ocean, wow. How can one find fault looking at all that;)

oceanwinds

Thanks cutie but dont ya know according to the OP pict in a tee shirt is unacceptable!

BadOne

No one has said that a t-shirt is unacceptable. You saw 'he was wearing a tshirt and cut off shorts where I could see his underwear' and completely assumed she was saying t-shirts are a no-no. For christsake, get of the damn horse already. You're looking foolish.
