ORIGINAL: ThatDamnedPanda Well, looks like the other kids have pretty much shot down most of those points while I was out runnung errands, so I'll just address the only one nobody else has torpedoed - #5, the one about the Alaskan Independence Party. I've never seen anyone here state that she was a member, although perhaps I simply missed it. What is true is that her husband, Todd, was a member for 7 years, and that she taped a recorded greeting for the party at their 2008 convention. In the interest of killing 2 birds with 1 stone, I cite as my source this article, detailing a series of incidents in which John McCain's chief campaign strategist, Steve Schmidt sent her an e-mail basically telling her to stop asking him to lie for her. quote:
"That's not part of their platform and he was only a 'member' bc independent alaskans too often check that 'Alaska Independent' box on voter registrations thinking it just means non partisan," Palin wrote. "He caught his error when changing our address and checked the right box. I still want it fixed." Palin was attempting to bend the facts ever so slightly to fit neatly into her version of events. In truth, the box that Alaskans have the option of checking when registering to vote states the full name of the party, "Alaskan Independence Party," not "Alaska Independent," which would make an error by uncommitted voters more plausible. Clearly irritated by what he saw as Palin's attempt to mislead her own campaign and apparently determined to demonstrate that the ultimate authority rested with him, Schmidt put the matter to rest once and for all with a longer response to everyone in the e-mail chain. "Secession," he wrote. "It is their entire reason for existence. A cursory examination of the website shows that the party exists for the purpose of seceding from the union. That is the stated goal on the front page of the web site. Our records indicate that todd was a member for seven years. If this is incorrect then we need to understand the discrepancy. The statement you are suggesting be released would be innaccurate. The innaccuracy would bring greater media attention to this matter and be a distraction. According to your staff there have been no media inquiries into this and you received no questions about it during your interviews. If you are asked about it you should smile and say many alaskans who love their country join the party because it speeks to a tradition of political independence. Todd loves his country We will not put out a statement and inflame this and create a situation where john has to adress this." Schmidt's rebuttal to Palin's suggestion that reporters had asked her about the issue was particularly blunt in that it implicitly questioned her truthfulness. Furthermore, his unwillingness to budge an inch on the matter was a remarkable assertion of his power to pull rank over the candidate herself. "I won't lie for you, Sarah" That's "plain-spoken Sarah" for you, in her own words. Not a soundbite, not some out-of-context anecdote massaged by a spin doctor - that's Sarah Palin, lying to McCain's campaign staff and asking them to lie on her behalf. About her husband's membership in a political party that advocates secession from the United States, and her own (albeit limited) support for that party. Well, I hate to differ, but no one has proven a single one of the slurs I posted. There's been a lot of sarcastic humor, and further attacks. There have been a lot of misdirection, and changing of terms. But not a single one of the slurs I posted has been proved. Just a bunch of mind-readers and pundits getting in more digs. You yourself are guilty, in your above post. Was Palin a member of the AIP or not? Not Todd. Not "did she record an address for their convention" ... WAS SHE A MEMBER? The answer of course is "No", but you attempt to change the subject, and paint a picture around the facts so that you can change the focus just enough to get by without actually answering the question. I'm kinda disappointed, because even if we disagree, I've always seen your point. But when it comes to Palin, you seem to be operating in the emotional, not the rational. Firm
