And imagine what things might be like if McCain had the foresight to anticipate the economic situation and picked Romney instead. Obama never had great credibility on the economic side, but it wasnt weak enough to overcome GWB. Romney could well have stepped in with some real business and economic experience and carried the ticket.

Romney would have cost the GOP ticket the evangelical support that is the core of the party's grassroots.

While moderates might have been more inclined to vote for McCain in this scenario without the evangelicals the ticket loses both the party base, threatening other candidates down ballot, and the enthusiastic volunteers vital to retail level campaigning.

It is an unfortunate fact but Romney is unacceptable to the vast majority of the RR and is therefore unelectable as a nation wide Republican candidate.
