That is what you see when you think of American liberals....how very sad for you.
Unable to see shades and colors....evrything in black and white....so sad.

Where did "American" come in to play?

Psst... No one has to actually specify anything.  He just fills in the blanks with whatever he wants.

Hippies and rose colored glasses.heh?
No need to fill in the blanks where you are concerned......your a very quick read.

However, what I see are Stalin, Chavez, Marx, Castro, and their ilk.

And which of those people locked up others in 'concentration camps?'

Oh wait....those names didn't. That was Hitler. Wait...who else....oh yes. We did it too. Let's ask the Japanese-Americans from the WWII days.....or perhaps for a more recent perspective....how about we ask Muslim Americans today?

Franklin Roosevelt.  A good AMERICAN liberal.

Actually, RML, I was hoping to drag the conversation from the pettiness of political personalities (though I know some are completely obsessed by that) and see if we can approach political philosophy.  Do feel free to not participate.

No, sorry, philosophy would consist of a question inviting responses to arrive at a conclusion.

You started with the conclusion and want responses to justify your beliefs.

That's not a philosophical discussion.

And the one "today" responsible for the same thing? Hint: it's another word for a shrub. I 'think' he was a REPUBLICAN.

You know, a very fictional but very provacative movie has the quote about how dangerous beliefs are, because they can't be changed. Instead, people should have 'good ideas.' You can always change an idea.....people have fought wars and died over beliefs.

False. This is neo-con claptrap. Whever believes this knows nothing about liberalism, and based on your comment about government control, I include you among thosewho know nothing about liberalism, either classical or modern.
You ignorance and adherance to the party line is showing.

They wouldn't be if the economy didn't tank (thanks republicans!)

But then, that was the goal wasn't it? To create a slave class for the upper crust of America? Good job.

This grabbed my attention in another thread, and I thought perhaps it deserved a place to be explored.

"liberalism is a dark worldview filled with negativity and bitterness."

I agree with this.  The notion that government must control the people, and protect them from themselves...  I find that very dark and negative.

What do you think of the highlighted statement above.  True or False?

( The exact quote is from lifted from rulemylife, but I think he was sarcastically paraphrasing someone else, and that someone may very well have heard it on the radio or something.)

False.

Funny how liberals are the ones who care about the environment, support the rights granted in the US Constitution (remember when conservatives tried to make being a member of the ACLU into something to be ashamed of rather than to be proud of?), risk their lives to improve working conditions for all and do all the many other things that have moved this nation forward but conservatives still think we should be demonized and attacked rather than being respected. I have spent years hearing this crap and the question has become why do conservatives hate us this much? It can't be physical fear. They claim some sort of patriotic fear that we would destroy the nation but on what basis?

Well that is very interesting, Arpig.  I'll have to include you among those who keep their heads in the grand idealism of liberal thought, without ever glancing at the practical applications.  I think we may be on different pages for our definition of "liberalism," because if you wish to make a case that governments which seek to directly involve themselves in the lives of the citizens are not taking control, that might not go well.  I'm talking about the activities and policies easily classed as liberal/progressive in the United States over the last 40-ish years.

I suppose we could try and figure out, at least, if we are speaking of social liberalism, or fiscal liberalism. I'd love to see a good explanation, in plain English, of how raising taxes, and the cost of doing business, helps get business back up and running.  How a good socially liberal policy, like hate-crime laws, aren't actually thought-crime laws...

      Fuckit.

      G'night

False.

Funny how liberals are the ones who care about the environment

And that was good, for a while, until it became a religion that all must be forced to convert to, and was used to push a completely unrelated agenda.  Humans are baa-aaad.  Pretty negative.  I live in a state where they tell me how quickly I can have light in my hallway in the middle of the night.  I find that pretty controlling

support the rights granted in the US Constitution

I cannot believe you went there Ken.  I really can't.  Which rights in the Constitution have they been standing up for?  Free Speech? - Hate crimes.  Guns? - LOL!  Search and Seizure?  Noise gets made, but Gitmo is still open, and the right has at least as good a claim to protesting domestic police activity as the left.  One of the rights granted to government by the people was to administer the death penalty, and the left doesn't seem very caring about preserving that.  That's four of the first five Amendments.  Where are they on quartering soldiers in our homes?

(remember when conservatives tried to make being a member of the ACLU into something to be ashamed of rather than to be proud of?)

(Remember when the liberals tried to make being a Christian something to be ashamed of)

, risk their lives to improve working conditions for all

And there is that negative view.  People cannot do for themselves

and do all the many other things that have moved this nation forward

Welfare.  Vietnam.  Public employee unions

but conservatives still think we should be demonized and attacked rather than being respected. I have spent years hearing this crap and the question has become why do conservatives hate us this much? It can't be physical fear. They claim some sort of patriotic fear that we would destroy the nation but on what basis?

Keep asking, keep looking.
