Well, don't necessarily knock it til you've tried it. Whips come in a wide variety of materials, and can be used in a lot of ways.

I personally do a fair amount of sensation play, and do I technically use whips? Yep. I sure do. The suede flogger produces a really nice contrasting thud to the snappy sting of the strap, and that contrasts to my hair on the bottom's skin, or fur, or a pinwheel, or my fingertips, or my fingernails, or a feather. It's one more sensation, and very pleasureable in its context.

I am not into whips either. Now a Riding Crop, that is different. And I have pictures of my RED BUTT to prove it too. YUMMY !

Is there such thing as a whip made of silk?

I haven't seen one. I have seen silk hankerchiefs used to stroke over the surface of the skin.

I suppose one could be made from silk rope, but that would be a little more advanced than you're looking for.
