So... do you have an enriched life? What makes it enriched for you?

Are seeking to enrich what you have or is status quo the deal? If you are seeking to enrich it.... how are you going about it... what are you doing to enrich your life? Why are you trying to enrich your life?

finally... what does it mean to you to have an enriched life?

Level -> RE: An enriching life!? (7/11/2009 7:06:23 PM)

One can enrich their existence all sorts of ways, of course. One way I'm doing it is by being a landowner for the first time. Taking something in a very raw form, seeing what it could be, and molding it, much with my own hands.

All this enriching also makes my head hurt, but hey... [;)]

Good to see you, Knight.

AlexandraLynch -> RE: An enriching life!? (7/11/2009 7:09:42 PM)

To me it means having something to talk about beyond my small immediate life concerns. Sure, I can bellyache about the price of groceries going up or the weird-ass sculpture they put up in front of the City Building, or my own medical issues, but anyone can do that. I can also talk about current events in politics and finance, new developments in science, and my own researches into history and anthropology. I don't watch soap operas or tv dramas. I am an Interesting Person, and so far it makes my life better, and it seems to be something other people like.

LadyPact -> RE: An enriching life!? (7/11/2009 7:32:31 PM)

If anything, KOM, I'm not the status quo.  LOL.

Right now, I'm getting ready to head on to what I consider a new adventure in this relocation bit.  In one way, I guess you could say that My positive attitude about it is enriching My life.  I'm attempting to connect with people in that new location.  New friends to (hopefully) enrich My life.  I'm also looking at it as a first step in (again, hopefully) adding to My poly family.  I always see My life as better for that.  I'm getting to go to a place I've never been, learn more things, meet new people.  All of those are positives, and I feel positives enrich My life.

modmike -> RE: An enriching life!? (7/11/2009 7:43:02 PM)

I don't believe my life is truly enriched nor do I know how to attain this.(if possible ever) Yet I seek to enrich it with every goal and accomplishment that may only but have a chance to actually enrich it. My idea of an enriched life would be one that is completely content and satisfied. Maybe it is for the best I never become enriched it could take my motivaiton from the sound of it.

lizi -> RE: An enriching life!? (7/11/2009 10:17:33 PM)

Enrichment basically means learning to me. And being open....open to learning something in some way, in some area. It can be technical knowledge or even more importantly an interpersonal type exchange. I have always sought to enrich my own life and what i have to offer others. I believe enrichment = satisfaction.

I go about it by listening and paying attention to what is happening around me. Asking questions...seeking knowledge. Plus I'm going back to school this fall full time for even more enrichment, lol. My goal in doing this is to eventually enrich the lives of others by learning to be a good teacher. Why am I seeking to enrich for myself and others? In my opinion it is, in the end, a good deal of what life is about.

So...learning, being open, and something else I think is important...not passing judgement. Because then you're no longer open or learning or even in the general area of enrichment.

CallaFirestormBW -> RE: An enriching life!? (7/11/2009 10:35:57 PM)

I have a very rich existence. I am well-read, and expand my horizons through philosophical and ideological discussion and exploration, through literature and music, through art and food. I am active in a broad range of communities, and provide resources of education and information for others, as well as providing networking to improve my own understanding of the things that are important to me.

I have wonderful companions in my life, and while my physical life is somewhat challenged, I still push myself to stretch my boundaries, and still expand my horizons in other areas that are not so limited.

Opportunities to create works of art through the interplay of steel and flesh provide enriching experiences, as do explorations of hierarchy, authority, historical recreation, and philosophy.

I am not materially wealthy, but enriching my understanding of proper management of resources has enabled me to develop a rich and varied life, comprised of aspects which fully embrace the person that I am and the things in which I invest my energy.

I am sure that sculpture was a beautiful work of art. Which is one of the most noteable ways for us to enrich life(now if it was the 10 commandments that is different).  Jerry Springer has a lot to teach us too.

Speaking of new developments in science anyone following the Large Haldron Collider or other similar projects?  These will truly enrich life as we know it.

AlexandraLynch -> RE: An enriching life!? (7/11/2009 11:41:16 PM)

It was good before they added the glass crystals, which do not match in shade, and are not in any particular order. But of course, that's a debatable opinion. (grin) That's half the fun of it.

I'm following the Large Hadron Collider at rather a distance; periodically I sit down with the friend who went back to school to do physics and he talks excitedly about latest developments and I get to ask questions about it. (grin) I am SO not a math person, so it's a bit of work to keep up. But it's fun.

Sir's very much about finding beauty in ordinary things.  So, together, we're very much about the price of groceries (contra AlexandraLynch) going up or, better yet, the price of groceries going down and those weird ass sculptures they have all over our fine city (there's these horses--lots of them all over and they're all anatomically correct!!!).

If we (the royal we) define enrich as adding to whats already here, yes, we live enriched lives.  We add a little something--humor, intelligence, organization, appreciation, kindness--to the life we've been given.  Sometimes, its simply a matter of wiping away the grime so the beauty shines through.

oceanwinds -> RE: An enriching life!? (7/12/2009 5:58:57 AM)

Yes, and thank you KOM for the topic.Enrichment has been a part of my life for the past couple decades or more. It is based on the premise of not staying stuck into patterns that do not serve my growth as a person. It also covers areas in life when the unexpected happens, and you take the bull by the horns and take in a deep breath and charge forward.  At this time enrichment comes in discovering who I am and how I can soar. It is living in the day, without hoping and waiting for tomorrow to be better. To discover joy for each day, even when at times all I might wish to do is cry and give up.  Giving up is not a word that I give in too, instead it is a sign to motivate me to discover the joy in living. It is also another signal that there are some things I can control, even when there seem to be not.  Quitting smoking was an area in my life I could control, and that would enrich my health. My grammar usage has always made me feel inadequate, so now I am enriching my life through studying basic grammar. A long time desire to write a novel is now an event, which offers me growth in my creativity, as well as learning more about different eras and cultures to implement them in my book.  Friends who are focus more on living verses the mundane problems call life, enrich my life, as I hope I do for them. Life is enriching and offers so much to learn and feel as we grow in who we are. Becoming more and more into being aware of how we contribute to others and ourselves is an enriching experience.

pompeii -> RE: An enriching life!? (7/12/2009 6:26:53 AM)

Enrichment, to me, would be (like for many of us), having a 24/7 slave girl tied to my bedpost ... yummy ...

LaTigresse -> RE: An enriching life!? (7/12/2009 6:28:35 AM)

What a delightful topic! Thank you KoM for giving me the opportunity to think of everything in my life that gives me such joy.

First and formost, I think the people we have in our lives and the relationships we build with them, are the most important. I could just go to work, do my job, then come home. But instead I have become friends of sorts, with the guys I work with, and many of my companies customers also. I could also have a different family dynamic, but I don't want anything less than I have. My adult children, their children, my siblings, father, they are too important to me and what I want my life to be. They enrich my life and I hope to god I reciprocate in some way for them.

Over the years I have made a concentrated effort to have a huge big full life that has nothing at all to do with work. My family is an important part of that, as are my furry babies. Even my home, the decor, the art, the plants, gardens outside, even the location and view, feed my soul. I love doing artistic things, painting, photography, sculpture, writing, gardening, cooking.......for me, to give me joy. It is a bonus that others enjoy most of it also.

Quite often it is little things like, having my favourite coffee beverage, or the perfect sheets on the bed. My favourite soft blanket to curl up in on the big leather sofa. Watching movies, listening to music. Sitting outside on the patio wrapped in blankets, watching fireworks with a 5 and 6 yo, ohhh and awwwing like a kid. Doing sparklers with them. Enjoying watching the doe and fawn I saw, just as the sun was coming up, in the orchard this morning. Looking forward to the fresh biscuits I am getting ready to make, real butter melting into their flaky warmth with cool homemade strawberry preserves on top.

Laughing WITH people I love. Taking a road trip, when I really cannot afford it, just to hang out with people I love, for a week.

I have a love of learning and exploring. Trying new things, meeting new people, visiting new places. Travel would be my biggest splurge if there was the money to do so.

None of the above are needs to sustain life. Many are things I never thought I would have. Many are things I've just been wonderfully blessed with, like the 5 and 6 yo, or the artistic abilities. And many are things I purposely have obtained (like this comfy sofa and uber soft blanket). And many things that enrich my life, I could easily do without, like my sparklies or the cafe au lait.

But all are aspects of my life, that enrich it and together makes it unique to me.

Yes, I do [:)]
What makes it enriched is the youngins. Two boys who have and are still traveling the world while in the service; a daughter who is a doctor; and a teenager who is simply mind boggling to talk with.
It does not get much better than this [:D]

Right now, I am perfectly happy with the status quo; when the last one leaves the nest, I will probably look around for new ways to add to my life.

finally... what does it mean to you to have an enriched life?

A well rounded life that when I reach the end of,I can look back and say with absolutle certainty " I had a good life" .

Missokyst -> RE: An enriching life!? (7/12/2009 8:46:11 AM)

I can't imagine what an enriched life is.  I paint, sculpt, create, give to charity, donate time or items where I can, help people if possible. I did a fair share of college.. ok.. over a fair share as I hit 5 different avenues of study.  I have kids who are now grown and never stopped being my friends as well as people who will come to me with their problems and talk to me about my own if I need someone, because we respect each other.  I have loved, been loved, moved on and can stand on my own.
What is enriched?  All I know is if I got hit by a train tomorrow I will go out flashing back on the good time I have had, even when those times were hard lessons, I will go out knowing I would not change my life because I would not have been me.
