Attorney General May Probe Bush Torture Policy | Newsweek Politics

Jul 12, 2009

......Holder, 58, may be on the verge of asserting his independence in a profound way. Four knowledgeable sources tell NEWSWEEK that he is now leaning toward appointing a prosecutor to investigate the Bush administration's brutal interrogation practices, something the president has been reluctant to do.

While no final decision has been made, an announcement could come in a matter of weeks, say these sources, who decline to be identified discussing a sensitive law-enforcement matter.

Such a decision would roil the country, would likely plunge Washington into a new round of partisan warfare, and could even imperil Obama's domestic priorities, including health care and energy reform. Holder knows all this, and he has been wrestling with the question for months. "I hope that whatever decision I make would not have a negative impact on the president's agenda," he says. "But that can't be a part of my decision.".............................................

..............Holder began to review those policies in April. As he pored over reports and listened to briefings, he became increasingly troubled. There were startling indications that some interrogators had gone far beyond what had been authorized in the legal opinions issued by the Justice Department, which were themselves controversial. He told one intimate that what he saw "turned my stomach."

It was soon clear to Holder that he might have to launch an investigation to determine whether crimes were committed under the Bush administration and prosecutions warranted.

The obstacles were obvious. For a new administration to reach back and investigate its predecessor is rare, if not unprecedented.

After having been deeply involved in the decision to authorize Ken Starr to investigate Bill Clinton's affair with Monica Lewinsky, Holder well knew how politicized things could get. He worried about the impact on the CIA, whose operatives would be at the center of any probe. And he could clearly read the signals coming out of the White House. President Obama had already deflected the left wing of his party and human-rights organizations by saying, "We should be looking forward and not backwards" when it came to Bush-era abuses.

Still, Holder couldn't shake what he had learned in reports about the treatment of prisoners at the CIA's "black sites." If the public knew the details, he and his aides figured, there would be a groundswell of support for an independent probe.

Thank god. Maybe Obama appointed the right man after all.

And on another thread liberals are being asked why we/or if we still trust this President(Indefinite Detention). For those wondering why.....here would be a good place to start.

Figuring out a nifty way to keep wagging the dog with the Bush II administration is something I should be impressed with, Mike?  Finding something else for at least some of the headlines to be about besides the still rising unemployment numbers?

As for this imperiling the domestic agenda, it might provide a convenient excuse for losing a fight they can't win anyway.  A weapon of mass distraction.

Hell this might even be the first plank in the platform for the re-election campaign in '12;  "Surely, Comrades, you do not wish for Bush to come back???"

Well we could talk about all the job that Obama was going to create when he was elected, but I haven't seen them yet so......

Not really, Mike. The problem is, it seems pretty clear Obama does not want Holder pursuing this matter. If Holder goes ahead, it's going to be on his own, in spite of Obama.

Or maybe it's about an Attorney General who has some principles and actually follows the letter of the law rather than being the administration lapdogs Ashcroft and Gonzales were.

Right.  Because in politics, everything is always exactly as it appears on the suface, and in the press release... [8|]

Panda you're right. Holder seems to be "grandstanding." I don't think many people really care about this issue.
It's never comes up in conversation with people that I've talked with at the bank, market etc.

Well popeye, that's pretty sad if true, because then it means we have started a process in which it is accepted that the laws that "we the people" have to abide by do not apply to a certain distinct ruling class of government officials who are not held accountable to those same laws.

LMAO you believe that charade? Holder cannot and will not do anything that Obama doesnt approve. Im all for it, as long as what Pelosi knew and when it knew it is in play. Theres far more damage possible to the Dems than the GOP here.

Would you care to speculate how that would have gone over during the Cheney....er Bush Administration Panda?......Which coincidentally was my point. The populace that sent Candidate Obama to the White House is getting exactly what they asked for Change.Change so fundamental  as to how the gov operates.....imagine an Attorney Gen, defying Cheney.....

slvemike4u -> RE: Attorney General May Probe Bush Torture Policy (7/12/2009 11:22:23 AM)

Okay I'll bite...just how has Popeye gained his intellectually dishonest label?
If you have no answer...we're back to you will slam anybody....and your own honesty is in play.

LadyAyla7053 -> RE: Attorney General May Probe Bush Torture Policy (7/12/2009 11:27:36 AM)

Personally I think it's about time. I happen to like Obama, although he wasn't my first choice in my opinion he was the lessor of two evils. I feel that if Holder is able to do an investigation President Obama should support him wholeheartedly. But it is highly unlikely and as for the promises that Obama made in his campaign while he did do a lot of pomp during it he hasn't been in office for a year yet and people are not seeing the changes he has promised. Something that some people forget Obama still has to deal with Congress and there are still conservatives in power. They simply didn't disappear when he was elected. So the changes that Obama promised will take some time. In all honesty I think that the soonest we may see actual changes taking place would be at least a year into his term. Besides he still has to fix relations with other countries that the Bush administration(both of them) destroyed when they were in office. But at least he is getting our men and women home as fast as possible. To me it's about time.

Bright Blessings
Lady Ayla

For the record popeye and I rarely agree on any matter....but I would hazard he has a much better reputation around here than you willbur will ever have.
