It will be interesting to see how the republicans handle the Sotomayor Confirmation Hearings this week. Will the Republicans on the Judiciary Committee, faced with the inevitability of her confirmation, look forward and try to make nice, thereby hopefully making some inroads into the large bloc of Hispanic voters.....or is it business as usual...in other words more pandering to their base.
Pandering to the base,in this instance seems foolhardy.....Sotomayor by all accounts will be confirmed. If the Republican party really wants to be seen as a party of inclusion rather than one of exclusion the hearings starting this morning would be a good place to start.Questioning begins tomorrow...if nothing else it should be entertaining.

Have been listening to the hearings so far. The Republicans seem to be split. Graham got in several whines but said, basically, that he was inclined to vote for her. Cornyn rather boldly claimed that no rights existed unless specifically spelled out in the Bill of Rights and even claimed that was the Founders intent despite copious evidence to the contrary. Big John also seemed completely sure he was voting against the judge.

Pandering my ass...

quote:

“There are some who believe that the president, having won the election, should have complete authority to appoint his nominee and the Senate should only examine whether the justice is intellectually capable and an all-around good guy; that once you get beyond intellect and personal character, there should be no further question as to whether the judge should be confirmed. I disagree with this view. I believe firmly that the Constitution calls for the Senate to advise and consent. I believe it calls for meaningful advice and consent and that includes an examination of a judge’s philosophy, ideology, and record.

Senator Barack Hussein Obama...

Okay subrob, tell me what is the Republican choice here...do they stand in the way of the truck coming down the road.....and as an extra added incentive alienate a large voting bloc.Or....realising the Dems have the votes to confirm.....treat her with kid gloves and behave themselves......possibly attracting instead of repelling a large ,and growing exponentially, voting bloc(I am not suggesting all Hispanic voters see all issues in all ways...no flames please).

We have too many damned slaves in politics!  I want my leaders to lead ... have their own morality, be clear about it, make their decisions based on that morality that we all know and understand and accepted when we voted for him, and then stick to that morality.  What we have ended up with is a situation where no one in politics can live as a free man or woman.  Its all about how much of their own beliefs they have to sacrifice in order to be able to stay in the game.  "OK. I'll side with you on the bridge to nowhere (which is a total waste of money but helps your state) if you side with me on keeping my military base open (also a total waste of money, but good for my state)."  Any politician who makes decisions on what is actually right or wrong, or good for the country as a whole, promptly finds himself squeezed out and as useless as a lame duck.

It's all of our faults, past and present.  At this point, I'm not even sure how one would go about changing it.  The whole thing frustrates me to no end.

I have no hostility at all towards slaves.  I am one.  I am just saying that I want my leaders to be leaders, not slaves.  There are so many different definitions of slave that its probably just best to explain what I mean, personally, when I use the term. :)

As a slave, my decisions are subject to my master's morality rather than my own.  He sets the parameters, the game rules (just a figure of speech, not that i think politics should be a game), not me.  If I am going to remain his slave, I damned well better follow his game rules (not that our life is a game).  I am just saying that its backwards that our elected leaders, many of whom I am sure had really good intentions when they were elected, are subject to these ridiculous game rules.  Why should they have to go against their sense of right and wrong and whats best for the country in order to even remain on the playing field, much less get anything accomplished.  That was my point.  I apologize that I came across as insulting slaves.  That was not my intent.

Why indeed? It is a sad thing that we have come to this state of affairs, when a true statesman, someone who sincerely serves the public would have no chance of getting elected.

Exactly.  It seems to me that by the time a politician can even get to the point of being electable, he's sacrificed himself so much that he's unfit to be president.  How do we change this?

They should do exactly what they are doing. Question her on her prior decisions and on judicial activism. The voting bloc issue is just a smokescreen, it doesnt happen. Memories are too short. GWB had by far the most diverse group of senior advisors/cabinet, it scored exactly 0 for the GOP. The Dems have consistently blocked qualifed judges both to the SCOTUS and the Federal Bench, and it has cost them 0.

I'm thinking she deserves all the respect and deference a Republican's nominee to the same position would receive.  I suspect she'll do far better than that, and many will still squeal and whine about what heat she does catch.

As a Presidential Nominee to the Supreme Court?  Exactly as much as this bitch is entitled to.

Despite her shortcomings in qualifications.Shortcomings Bush's fellow Republicans were quick to point out....Shortcomings so egregious her nomination was withdrawn....thats some scale your using buddy.....mind taking your thumb off it next time you post!
Anywho....this really isn't the question.the question is do the Republicans on the Judiciary Committee take this opportunity to try to attract and perhaps deflect the criticism of exclusiveness.Or is it business as usual from the right?

If they don't ask her the tough questions, they are failing in their obligations to the constituents who put them there.   And yes, Mike, I'm saying she is entitled to exactly the same level of treatment Bush's "fuck you" of a nominee got.

Do go find me the bit in the Constitution where the qualifications to serve on the Supreme Court are listed...

No gravitas,no support from her own party....an "unforced error"according to conservitive journalist David Frum.....and this is what your pissed at?
Just think of this as an unwritten qualification......You need the support of your own party to gain confirmation...and foolish is the President that nominates someone who doesn't enjoy such support!

What gives you the idea that I'm pissed?  If President Obama thinks the Supreme Court needs Tits of the Caribbean, I figure the Republicans are going to need to ask her about abortion.

(In the meantime, I'm going to have some fun with where the Libs set the bar on talking about women, and where they come from.   )
