We rarely argue...Mostly because he refuses to engage with me on that level... However, it just seriously enrages  me when we watch a movie, television program, listen to music, or talk about a book where someone is using a metaphor.  For some reason metaphors somehow do not process in my brain. Like not at all. i'm not really stupid..i mean i have a masters degree.  i don't understand why i just can not comprehend these little bastards and why most everyone else in the free world can.  Any ideas on why i can not get this? Any suggestions for how i can learn about these or is it just pretty much hopeless?

I'm afraid I don't understand what you mean by not getting a metaphor. Do you mean you do not understand what is meant by "all the world's a stage"?

zaphira understands what you mean; she is much the same. zaphira has no use for metaphors; to her thinking, they are nothing more than an attempt to be coy and witty.
zaphira does not process them well either; Master said once, perhaps it was because zaphira thinks quickly, in the here and now; and likes answers to come quickly, in the here and now. Metaphors make zaphira stop and analyze; something that slows zaphira down. This slave does not like that, the feeling of having to slow down; in her mind or in action. Perhaps, you are somewhat like zaphira in her thinking. You don't want to stop and analyze; you would rather have the answer now.

I'm sorry.

If you don't get metaphors then Most ALL movies other than Action Movies and even then a LOT of them must confuse the fucking hell out of you.

That would make me miserable.

I'm not sure but..I think the birds and the bees are an example of metaphor...

buuuut I've always had a hard time reading between the lines..I guess there's nothing to do with it, it just takes practice.
For metaphors I'd study poetry.

Arpig....One of my favorite books uses that metaphor{big book of alcoholics anonymous} and i really thought i understood it, right until You asked me that question...And i attempted to explain it...So damn...i guess maybe not..

Zaphira..That could be it... i'm very much a direct person... i've never enjoyed talking around stuff or beating around the bush..

Steel...With all due respect..i guess i'm confused as to what part of this thread elicited a response in you that you felt necessary to put me down.  Because pretty much... That just what you did.  Because i wish to remain an adult i will end my comments about my feelings in regard to your response there.

subtlebutterfly.... i was never told about the birds and the bees....but can i just tell you that makes no logical sense to me...i mean they are two different animals..How can they mate?  This also explains, in part, why i've never understood poetry...

i was not making this post to be funny. i was very serious in my explanation of my difficulty with metaphors. For those of you that can not relate, well i'm sorry about that. For those of you that believe i'm stupid because i can not get metaphors..well...sometimes..a tree is just a tree...sometimes...a house is just a house..

Wow, that's all I can say. I never even imagined that somebody could have a problem such as this.

Wow.  You better put me on block then, because I like being coy and witty and talking in metaphors.  It's who I am, I was born this way.

Kali,
You are obviously bright.
I think as bright as people can be there will always be something that we just won't get.
Some people aren't mechanically inclined.
Some people don't get mathematics.
Some people who get algebra are lost in geometry or trigonometry.
Some people understand logic problems
Some people don't understand linear thinking at all.
Some people understand written language but have a hard time with the nuance of conversation.
It is a processing issue.

Could you get better at understanding them?
I think so.
How to do that... not sure, but perhaps the two of you could spend some time when you are both relaxed and talk about it.
I think it might be interesting from both perspectives...if he throws out a metaphor and listens to your take on it with the understanding it is neither right nor wrong he could learn alot about you and then you can do the same with him.
It is very frustrating to feel like you always get something wrong.
Those things as small as they might be can tear at our souls.
I would suggest doing your best to let go of the idea the way you see things is wrong and the way he sees them as right.
You just have different perspectives.

Well Kali, I guess I'm at the other end, because I am known as the Queen of metaphors, I use them all the time at work when I present or speak--well hell I use them here---its a matter of visualization--being able to transfer the words into a mental picture that represents the thought---as Arpig said--all the worlds a stage--well because we all watch, we all judge, we all criticize each other, everything a person does is "on stage" subject to criticism---

So Collarme is like a library, as you search for a mate, you can read the synopsis without ever checking out the book---

Windychimes, i have never been annoyed or frustrated by anything you've written..  Angelika..Good suggestion..
CatdeMedici   You are killing me here!!!
Mostly because as much as i don't get those 'official' metaphors i freaking use metaphors all the damn time when i'm talking to my clients, doing groups, or giving lectures or presentations to groups..
But, somehow it's different when i do it...When i do it i'm just giving them something to visualize... and describing it for them..  and making the correlation for them.  Here's an example of something that gives me just straight up rage: there's an adult cartoon called Boondocks. It appears to be about all this everyday stuff...But apparently it's about all this other stuff going on in the middle east!! WTF???!!!

I wouldn't worry about it. The majority of metaphors you're going to hear are cliches, and you're better off not listening to them. I despise cliches; they are the refuge of people with no thoughts of their own. When you hear someone begin a sentence with, "As the old saying goes......", get ready to hear some bullshit that you'd expect to see embroidered on a pillow or on a poster in a rehab. It's sickening.

Eh, don't feel bad.  I happen to have no conception whatsoever of grammar.  I have spent years trying and I just can't wrap my head around it  I couldn't deconstruct a sentence if my life depended on it.  I can sort of sound out what sounds right in my head a bit so as not to write like a complete idiot, but I never know for sure.  If it hadn't been for the literature aspect, I'd have failed my high school english classes.  So don't feel bad.  We all have our little hang ups.

It is a euphamism for informal sexual education by alluding to the sexual behaviour of animals to avoid explicit explanation of human behavior.   Pssst. . . they are not mating cross-species.

Okay, let me first address that you thought I insulted you. I was actually feeling bad for you.

Most Writers who work in screen plays like to work in Metaphors because of the idea that Artistic only gets you so far.

For Instance Independence Day (ID4) was a Metaphor for the Human Desire to Survive and the 4th of July and the Speech was a Simple Metaphor that explained freedom and survival is a HUMAN aspect and In the end regardless of where we are from we are Human and all seek basically the same thing.

In an other example the Movie BRICK with Joseph Gordon Levitt about the Guy who was turned evidence on friends in school about drugs and was exiled for it and then had to go back and do it again to save things from getting much worse was a Metaphor for the Highschool Whitewash and how it is much more involved and far more serious than most parents understand. The Metaphor is that even something as trivial as Highschool Problems are a Labirynth of Emotional Termoil for those who experience it and sometimes things are MUCH worse than people think they are

If you have problems grasping Metaphors movies muct suck for you. The Multiple Diminisions and deep layers that writers work for YEARS to incorporate into great films is just a movie to you without the deeper meaning and metaphor of the film.

I am Sorry that you have this problem. I would hate to be that way.

Now I have a question for you.

In all the time that you have known me, sure we aren't close, but what would make you think I would say something like that to you to be rude.

If I didn't like you I would say NOTHING to you.

Why the low opinion of me?

Steel

Okay. . . let me see if I can explain. . .

Boondocks is about everyday stuff.  We all understand everyday stuff.  The secondary message is to compare the stuff going on in the Middle East to the everyday stuff that we all understand.  The comparison allows a greater understanding of what is going on in the Middle East because it does so by using the illustration of everyday stuff.

Everyday stuff is the vehicle used to "shed some light" on the issues in the Middle East.

So. . . is it that you do not understand metaphors or you do not see their point or that you are likely to take them literaly?

Steel,

i have emailed you regarding this privately but felt because i did this publicly you deserved this publicly as well...i deeply and sincerely apologize for my presumptuousness and inaccurate assumption. i have no good rational why i would perceive your statements to be the way i did. i also have no good reason why i would have not cmailed you or called you and not asked for clarification about this....The only thing i can tell you is i screwed up...And for that i am deeply and truly sorry.

Regarding the metaphors.....Yeah...You are so right. It really does suck.. I've not seen either one of the movies You mentioned but i was trying to think of one i watched {Nanny McPhee} and i didn't get all this 'metaphoric crap' that was alluded to it until i was talking to Aylee about it....It gets very frustrating when He and i go to see a movie because we can see literally two different movies... i can see the one that's on the screen....and He see's.....well......a diferen't one.
Kali
