If a profile has a photo I will definitely be attracted to one that shows them smiling and not surrounded by clutter but mainly I like to see if their profile or posts show a sense of humour and a range of interests outside of kink.  I often email people to let them know that I liked either their photos or something they have written.

A major turnoff is if their profile or journal includes moaning about how all the people on here are users or liars.

And SBFY can I volunteer to meet your mum please [:D]  (it's ok everyone, I have confessed my undying adoration for him many times in the past and the new pic cements it)

No seriously, I usually don't check profiles much, I don't search through many, I look at profiles of those that I know from the forums. If someone makes an interesting comment on the forums, I like to see what the person has to say about themselves in their profile. Though the pics are nice too, I prefer meaningful pictures and not random booty or titty shots. A picture of a house that someone remembers fondly and stories of why, rather than a pic of a leg in boots with no back story. I love the stories that photos tell, and the stories that people tell about the photos, but it's mostly the interesting stuff that I check out.

I've said it a lot of times, but for those who don't check the forums, they have no idea what they are missing. Sure there's trolls, but it's fairly easy to spot them and ignore their posts.

Well I don't really cruise profiles but if an interesting photo, that is not obviously stolen, pops up on my home page when I am checking email I look, especially if there is more than one photo. If they have a well written profile I look a bit more. If there is something really interesting in what they've written, I may write them to comment about it.

I just don't have any real expectations on the dating side of this site so don't really go looking. Too much dirty water under that bridge over the years online for me to want to waste time with it.

I'm far from perfect looking, so it didn't matter to me if he was either. A comparable sense of morality and ethics appeals most to me.

I've written people to ask about pictures they have, to ask something about a post they made so I wouldn't hijack the thread.

If you do have a picture, a clean background helps a lot. And if it's a face shot, then please smile. If someone is scowling, I don't look any further.

These aren't in any particular order and are rather stream of consciousness: 
**Attractive person in pics
**If there are pics, I don't like only seeing bdsm-oriented stuff usually
**Gait of writing; that they're able to elucidate thoughts well or at least in an interesting fashion
**Proper usage of words (Like you and you're or their, they're, there)
**Similarity in overall goal (Life-partnership)
**Similarity in interests (Not only kink-based)

First I look at the pictures. If any of the pictures include the chopped off arm of the ex boyfriend/husband I pass. If the pictures are of landscapes, puppies, kitties or horsies, I pass. If all of the pictures are leg and foot shots, I pass. Glamour Shots - Pass. I want to see what you look like when you roll out of bed. And for the love of all that's holy - stop downloading the pics from porn sites and using them on your profile. There is a good possibility that those pics will end up in an ad on CollarMe.

After the pictures, I start reading. I pass on any profiles which are nothing more than angry rants, especially if they name the person who dared anger them. Also, if I find any of the following code words/phrases, I pass.

"not a doormat"
"no players"
"no fakes"
"no wannabes"
"real/true submissive"
"real/true dominant"
"under consideration"
"can you tame me/are you the one who can tame me"
"submission is a gift"

True that may limit me to 1 profile a week that actually gets my attention. But .. it's about quality, not quantity.

I like looking at profiles of folks who post interesting things, have a slant on things, sense of humor, a way about them, interesting photo's and are all around fascinating.

In principle I agree, but I find that as a newb with no experience there's a limit to what I can contribute here. It's a bit of a Catch-22: Can't contribute without experience, can't get experience without contributing...
