Status: offline 		Oh, I don't know. Many homes here in Minnesota have had indoor plumbing for 2 or 3 years now, and last time I went down to the general store to get a roll of barbed wire and a new axe handle, they was some men sayin' they gonna pave the main street next year.

Actually, for over 50 years, WCCO has been one of the top 4 or 5 TV stations in the country. They've probably graduated more on-air personalities to the national networks than almost any other station in America, and it's not likely Cronkite would have stayed long before getting back on the fast lane. A talent like him would have risen to the top no matter where he was. But it would have been a very different arc, nonetheless. He'd have still been a national figure in the news business no matter what, but he may not have been the alpha anchor. Or if he had been, it probably would have come some years later, and he would probably not be remembered as the man who informed us about every major event of the 60s. It could have been a very different career.

What lie? As I remember it, he editorialized that it was finally clear the war was a stalemate which we could not win without escalating beyond the point of sanity. Which was a completely accurate observation. Interesting to note that in your world, a completely accurate observation is not considered fair and balanced.

Wait...  "fair and balanced..." where have I heard that term before... oh, yeah, I remember. Fox "News." That explains your aversion to reporters who actually tell the truth. It's not a familiar subject for you.

Status: offline 		He brought a lot of fun and enthusiasm, especially with the Apollo 11 moon flight. He also maintained an air of calmness, too.

I would have to say he reminded me of Edward Murrow of the 60's. RIP, Mr. Cronkite.

I didn't grow up with him; I was born in 1975. I do remember that my father hated his guts because of his comments on the Vietnam War when my dad was over there. But he is a historical figure, so it's definitely news worthy.

Status: offline 		He was the first TV anchorman to start giving his opinion instead of just reporting the news. All of the 'talking heads' on TV now took after him. I won't miss him..

Your recollection Panda is correct.

He did not spin it; he told the unadulterated truth.

The way we were...me and Walter. In an already-tidied kitchen, a lone girl sits on a vinyl chair at a formica table, tearfully listening to Mr. Cronkite on the b/w, with his throaty voice of calm authority explaining the world, while she silently begs her plate of cold canned spinach and congealed pork chops to somehow disappear...
