I can't be the only one who gets a little turned off, no matter how sexy someone is, if they write like an eight year old.  Some folks even try to use big, fancy words, but they don't bother to look up the spelling (Shakespear, viseral?).  How adults don't know the difference between YOUR and YOU'RE is beyond me.  And of course there is the old favorite, confusing DOMINATE with DOMINANT.  It is kind of amusing to see a profile from a self proclaimed goddess who thinks that alot is one word.

DarkSteven -> RE: Spelling/Grammar (again?) (7/18/2009 5:56:14 AM)

I really try not to be a grammar/spelling snob.

Generally, someone who can't spell also cannot communicate and frequently cannot think coherently.  Steel is the major exception to this rule - I read his posts because of the content.  Definitely not for the spelling.

Greetings

First of all, this is an international site. That mean *GHASP*...wait for it...wait for it...this is amazing, your would never have guessed it...drum roll...not everyone have English as their first language. I am from Norway and I do make spelling and grammar errors because in my everyday life I speak another language. So tell me Mr very nice musculature and chest but no face, and from the look of it no brain either, do you speak a second language, and if you do, do you always get spelling and grammar correct?

And that lead me to another point, there are a fair bit of the population that have dyslexia in one form or another. We are not stupid, we are not lazy but sometimes word's get jumbled up. Also before you say there are spell checkers for that. Let me inform you that while spell checkers do work, there is a limit to their usefulness, especially words that are very similar is hard to correct as you do not see which of the suggested words are the correct one.

Now sure, some pepole just make no effort and the spelling errors could have been avoided, but usually when you see someone making allot of spelling and grammar errors it is because they are either from another nation, or have some sort of reading and writing disability. So while you may think what you will. To me it is far more sexy to see someone with something of substance to say but with a few spelling errors, than an airhead with perfect grammar.

I wish you well

I don't find this to be the case at all. I've known some very wise folks who communicate some brilliant and deep thoughts very coherently who couldn't get 100% on a spelling test. Correlating spelling/grammar with intelligence or ability to communicate coherently is an error, IMHO.

That said, I also have a hard time reading lots of misspellings and bad grammar. It's just a pet peeve but by no means (to me) an indicator of overall intelligence.........luci

TurboJugend -> RE: Spelling/Grammar (again?) (7/18/2009 6:08:41 AM)

Complaining about grammar is often done to feel superior to the one who makes the mistake or make them feel crap.
The message is mostly clear enough....even with a typo.

And what to do with people who make mistakes? Lock them up..because they are the lower class? Shouldn't they visit Cm anymore?

Every one has flaws...some suck at grammar.

slavekal -> RE: Spelling/Grammar (again?) (7/18/2009 6:15:32 AM)

Okay, Mr. smart alecky Nerwegian, let me clarify.  Of COURSE I make allowances for people conversing in a second language.  Most non native English speakers have a better command of English spelling/grammar than Americans do.  And no, I do not speak a second language.  I am an arrogant American.  English is the only language anyone needs.
Words gettting jumbled was not the point here.  It was people who don't know that sentences start with capital letters, don't know the difference between to and two or there and their, and who don't know that every sentence deserves some sort of punctuation.  And I was not referring to typos.  Hell, we all make those.  I was talking about basic elementary school language and writing skills.  There...do I have a brain now?

I don't think US English equals UK English. ( I think you can even install Windows in both languages..lol)
Atleast that is what they told me at school here in Europe.

( or was that about difference in pronounciation?)

rikigrl -> RE: Spelling/Grammar (again?) (7/18/2009 6:26:04 AM)

Very well stated nephandi, and the same with TurboJugend. i would rather know someone of character with a poor grasp of grammar than an effete elitist who wins the elementary school spelling bee.

janiebelle -> RE: Spelling/Grammar (again?) (7/18/2009 6:27:32 AM)

I understand we all make mistakes in typing; sometimes our brains just move faster than our fingers.  And the American public school system has turned out many people who are semi-literate, and you can't tell them from someone who speaks English as a third language.  Add in all the "netspeak" and acronyms, the "texting" habits, etc., and the picture grows darker by the minute.
However, I am still appalled from time to time.  I can just see Sister Mary Louise from high school English class berating students for their grammar disasters.
Their/there/they're
affect/effect
insure/ensure
irregardless/enthused and other "it's not a word" items
Talk about scarred for life- leave it to the RCC.

slavekal -> RE: Spelling/Grammar (again?) (7/18/2009 6:39:46 AM)

A lot of it is just laziness too.  When I wanted to respond to the guy from Norway, I realized that I wasn't sure how to spell NORWEGIAN.  So you know what I did?  I looked it up.  It's kind of easy to do when you are already on the friggin' internet.  Good spelling does not make one effete or an elitist.  It just means that they give half a crap.

rikigrl -> RE: Spelling/Grammar (again?) (7/18/2009 6:45:13 AM)

nephandi is a girl, were we too lazy to check her profile?

slavekal -> RE: Spelling/Grammar (again?) (7/18/2009 6:47:49 AM)

Maybe laziness.  Could have been just an incorrect assumption, though.  I incorrectly attributed such a harsh reply to a male mind.

DomImus -> RE: Spelling/Grammar (again?) (7/18/2009 6:48:13 AM)

Grammar is like showering. Anyone can do it but those who don't seem to be the ones who get offended that it makes a difference.

TurboJugend -> RE: Spelling/Grammar (again?) (7/18/2009 6:50:43 AM)

perhaps they took a bath?

find it a weird comparison

I agree with Nephandi. Also many people who are dyslexic see the words as looking right when they really aren't. So folks lets keep in mind that there could be a reason why others are not the greatest at grammar and spelling. Don't put everyone in the same good old basket.
Have a wonderful weekend all
A.

slavekal -> RE: Spelling/Grammar (again?) (7/18/2009 6:56:33 AM)

But everyone should know that sentences begin with capital letters and end with periods.  And anyone over age eight should know real versus not real words.

*shrug*
People are people. If they want to 'sound' like idiots by the way of their spelling; who am I to try and convince them otherwise. If it bothers you that much, move on to someone who actually cares.
