don't laugh, but i had one corner me in the basement once. I must have stood there for 10 minutes before i backed up veeeery slowly and grabbed a blanket to throw on it.

I once squished one so hard with my foot that I felt like I blew my knee out. I limped back to the house. But....he was just a stain on the ground.

I'm not as kind to the mice that come in during the winter (and neither are my cats).

I once had a mamma cat eat a mouse right in front of me. That was.....appetizing.

I guess I should clarify.  The mice I catch, in a hav-a-heart, get deposited in a wooded area a couple miles down the road from my place. I try my best to catch them before the cats do...one of them is quite the sadist.  I can't stand to hear the squeaks the mice make when she's teasing them.

Peaceful co-existence is the goal....we are Borg (of the green-crunchy-granola type) [;)]

I didn't mean I made her eat it. She caught it (I presume) to try and feed to her offspring. I nearly let her in the house until I saw it in her mouth. Then I said she couldn't come in with it and if she wanted it, she'd have to eat it outside. Apparently she understood me and promptly devoured it right in front of me.

Get the right dog and it will take care of any coyote problems for you.

Dogs have been used as a tool to control/contain coyote populations by the USDA & private landowners for many years.

But there is a rule with rodents at my house, you wanna live, stay of my yard.

I have the same rule with spiders. Only I replace "yard" with "sight."
oh lordie...we have Wood (or Wolf, i get them confused) and they are the nastiest things.
*shudders*
Of course (if Gwyn or Soul are reading this) i never kill them. 'Course not.
 The healthy squirt of Raid i blast 'em with does it for me

Oh no, hun.....you just go right ahead and zap 'em.....outside they are fine....I have room to run away screaming.....but INSIDE....uh-huh, they are fair game!  And I'm guessing they are Wolf spiders.....*shudderewwwwwwshudder*.  Any spider dumb enuf to wander in to my house is either a grease spot on the wall/floor,ceiling, or an appetizer for my kittehs.  *doubleewwwwwwww*

I am completely opposed to spiders. There's just something thoroughly wrong about them, on every level.

They do eat bugs, ya know....

LaTigresse -> RE: Coyotes (7/20/2009 11:45:34 AM)

I welcome spiders........outside. Inside the house.........they die!

But if you get the wrong dog, the coyotes will take care of it. A lot of farmers in my area have come up missing their farm dogs. Especially male dogs.

the Game Commission suggested that too. The problem with that is we have a few (harmless thus far) bears here and a serious rabid raccoon issue. (The three farms along this road all agreed to leave the bears alone. They hurt nothing and, bless them, have nowhere else to go, I don't want to mess with a good situation) Not to mention 5 cats that would make my life a living hell...

I just found this site ResidentCoyotes where they mention placing mothballs and ammonia-soaked rags around the area of concern.  Has anyone else heard of that, tried it and had success?  Just curious.
I know some herbs act as deterrents to deer...could this be similar?

Cool...they can dine out. Once they come inside they are BugSplat

LaTigresse -> RE: Coyotes (7/20/2009 11:51:46 AM)

I've not had any reason to worry about them and don't mind them being around. Helps keep the rabbit population under control.

I assume that there are some scents that would keep them away.

i have no idea about the herbs. I always use Irish Soap shavings. I have no idea what is eating the garden, but the shavings puts a stop to it.

And holly, about the coyotes, they are pretty much still afraid of people in a rural setting.....it's the ones in urban settings that are a little more daring.  They are used to people, wary and leery, but they will come into contact with them more easily.  Look at the one in Chicago that wandered into a store during a hot day...just laid down and didn't bother anyone.....of course, all the city folk had a cow.....sheesh!  Even so, I've never heard of anyone of them attacking a human.  When I lived with a friend of mine in the sticks, we'd hear them all night...it was actually kind of nice....I love to hear the howling, unless they've killed......then it's just too awful to listen to.  And apparently, the pack around the house I lived in had a sense of humor.....the house was shaped like a capital "I", and one night, the pack grouped up in the front of the house by the porch and started singing into the alcove.....my friend said they bolted right out of bed thinking that they were being invaded or something!  Apparently, they loved the acoustics!  Around here, in the Phoenix/Valley area, they are seen alot, and cats and small dogs have been taken out of yards.  I've seen them during daylight hours too.  I'm not sure if that's a foolproof guarantee that something is wrong with them, tho.

I'd keep an eye on the chickes, and make sure whatever they are cooped up in at night is secure....once they discover the buffet, you might have some serious issues then.  And the racoons and possums are cool.....leave 'em be.

I agree. Rabbits are a FAR worse problem.

I have to fence (with the fence partially buried) everything--drives the cost of orchards, vineyards and gardens up quite considerably. [Rabbits will take them to the ground otherwise, especially during the winter.]

The coyotes are welcome to all they can carry.

soul2share -> RE: Coyotes (7/20/2009 11:55:52 AM)

Yes, snakes are good....you want them on a farm.....unless you want mice and rats more......

the dude from the game commission said that there is no real time for them, but nightfall is safer. Seeing one in the daylight doesn't mean they are rabid.

oh alright. If i get rid of the snakes then i would have to clean up all the fast food wrappers.....

Musicmystery -> RE: Coyotes (7/20/2009 11:58:37 AM)

I'm not fond of snakes, but I have them in my gardens (I grow under black plastic, so it's a great habitat), and yes, I leave them alone as welcome pest controllers.
