I am always overjoyed to see bull snakes around. They love love LOVE mice and rats. So do coyotes and all the wonderful birds of prey we have around the place. Unfortunately the birds of prey also seem to be quite fond of snakes. Not sure who is winning that battle.

And holly, about the coyotes, they are pretty much still afraid of people in a rural setting.....it's the ones in urban settings that are a little more daring.  They are used to people, wary and leery, but they will come into contact with them more easily.  Look at the one in Chicago that wandered into a store during a hot day...just laid down and didn't bother anyone.....of course, all the city folk had a cow.....sheesh!  Even so, I've never heard of anyone of them attacking a human.  When I lived with a friend of mine in the sticks, we'd hear them all night...it was actually kind of nice....I love to hear the howling, unless they've killed......then it's just too awful to listen to.  And apparently, the pack around the house I lived in had a sense of humor.....the house was shaped like a capital "I", and one night, the pack grouped up in the front of the house by the porch and started singing into the alcove.....my friend said they bolted right out of bed thinking that they were being invaded or something!  Apparently, they loved the acoustics!  Around here, in the Phoenix/Valley area, they are seen alot, and cats and small dogs have been taken out of yards.  I've seen them during daylight hours too.  I'm not sure if that's a foolproof guarantee that something is wrong with them, tho.

I'd keep an eye on the chickes, and make sure whatever they are cooped up in at night is secure....once they discover the buffet, you might have some serious issues then.  And the racoons and possums are cool.....leave 'em be.

Have you seen Bill Engvall's bit about the little dog and the coyote?

We have lots and lots of red-tailed hawks. I wish they'd go for the voles.

Fun to watch, at least. Hawks, I mean...

LaTigresse -> RE: Coyotes (7/20/2009 12:08:39 PM)

Yes they are. I feel so lucky to have the variety of birds of prey to watch. We always seem to have one or two pairs of kestrels nesting in the big oak trees. Several varieties of owl, including a very vocal screech owl that loves to sit in the oak tree outside my bedroom window and say hello at ungodly hours. Several types of hawk, including the red tails. And during the winter, bald eagles. One year we had a rare visit from a golden eagle.

My little dog has no idea she was checked out by a large red tail on Saturday evening. My heart jumped into my chest when I saw it. I don't think the hawk could have picked her up but none the less......

BOUNTYHUNTER -> RE: Coyotes (7/20/2009 12:11:48 PM)

Holly, we have a large pack here on our farm so far only an occasional barn cat turns up missing, I have heard of them getting after a small child if the oppunity offers its self..I hunt at night alonn and I personal haven't had a problem with the coyotes..of course have several large hounds along probally helps, what I worry the most about is theses large cats, black panthers and tawny mountain lions we have been seeing lately, they will take a calf or a small horse...A handgun with a large pack probally isn't much good , I would perpers a 12 ga shotgun loaded with number 4 shot...We carry one in a saddle scabber when we ride deep in the mountains here..bounty

I have a skunk raiding my honey bee hive. I was hoping after a long absence, it had moved on after last fall/winter. Apparently it loves my bees. I am going to have to shoot it and I don't want to. However, coming face to face, and far too close for comfort, while walking the dogs late at night, in the dark, is NOT good for my heart.
Lat..you can buy skunk repellent at a feed store.

Skunk repellent! What the hell do they use to repel skunks? Lutefisk?

as someone with some Norwegian ancestry, I am offended by this comment.

No Loki, I haven't but I'm sure it's hysterical!  I love him and Ron White.....Jeff F. is okay, and I just can't stand Larry......Rom and Bill were on Comedy Central Saturday night...laughed my ass off!

DesFIP -> RE: Coyotes (7/20/2009 1:10:52 PM)

Back before deer fencing for the garden, it was recommended to me that I buy coyote urine to spray about. That repels the deer. Of course, the lady did mention that it would bring the coyotes. Not a trade off I went for.

Basically, his bit about coyotes ties in with his bit about his wife's weiner dog. He wakes up in the middle of the night hearing yelping and when he looks out back, a coyote has the weiner dog in its mouth. Just about that time, his dog goes pushing past his legs out the back door and his the coyote broadside which then does two flips and then jumps over the fence to get away.

And as Bill explains it:
"For about two weeks after that, my wife and I would be sitting at the breakfast table and there would be two or three coyotes sitting watching the back yard. And you'd know the conversation went something like this: "Naw, hell no, don't go in there, that little dog's a setup. I ain't lyin', ask Joe what happened to him!"

That would probably be the way it would go at my house. Except it would be the 12# terror defending the 45# coydog. OR, the horse Mo would end up carrying the coyote around, swinging, by it's tail.

I have weird animals.

But there is a rule with rodents at my house, you wanna live, stay of my yard.

I have the same rule with spiders. Only I replace "yard" with "sight."

oh lordie...we have Wood (or Wolf, i get them confused) and they are the nastiest things.
*shudders*

Of course (if Gwyn or Soul are reading this) i never kill them. 'Course not.

 The healthy squirt of Raid i blast 'em with does it for me

*squeaking and shuddering*

we have a house rule.  any eight legged assasin that gets in the house has a DEATH WISH and we'll be glad to accomodate that wish for him/her.  period.  no eight legged assasins in the house, along the walkways, or building their webs where i'm going to run into them.  this includes the car.

if they're outside going about their own business, i leave them alone as long as their in THEIR space.

otherwise i have a complete meltdown and shriek for the closest male to come deal with it.  (TheEngineer says i'm silly.  beastlyimp (visiting right now) sighs and comes and disposes of said assasin.)

kitten, still with the wigginses.

Ooh, another person with a horse who's a bully. Thought I was the only one!

Musicmystery -> RE: Coyotes (7/20/2009 6:51:43 PM)

Some of the people who keep sheep around here add a llama to the fold.

Apparently, a llama will kick the living shit out of a too bold coyote.

Dunno. I did try to help one guy corral his renegade llama when I found it walking down the road. It was neither the friendliest nor the most cooperative of beasts.

I even tried to lure it with carrots I just happened to have with me. Nothing--though the two horses sure rushed to fence!

winterlight -> RE: Coyotes (7/20/2009 10:01:38 PM)

In my opinion one coyote alone would be timid and shy. Two or more i have no idea. I would be cautious. There was a lady in our area that was out walking her dogs it was 7 p.m. at night. She was right near traffic. 3 Coyotes attacked her and her dog. It happened long ago. I don't remember the details other than that.

I have seen  a Coyote walk through our division in the middle of the road. It bolted when it say my car. I have seen 3 in an area where there is a grassy area. I am glad i was in my car because they became very interested in me. I would personally not want to be near them but that is me.

One month ago i was driving to work and i saw one jump over a fence in my neighborhood. Perhaps it was looking for a tiny, tasty morsel?

Around here they have been pushed out due to the building of homes. I have no idea what they would do as they get squeezed more and more out of their habitat.

soul2share -> RE: Coyotes (7/20/2009 10:13:45 PM)

winterlight, what they do is adapt to the circumstances.....trash cans are a veritable buffet for them.....and yes, they hunt smaller dogs and cats....unfortunately, they are just doing what comes naturally to them.  It is us humans who are encroaching upon their territory.....it's a fact of today's society.  And since they are seen more as a pest than anything else, everyone wants to just kill them.  I guess it's just the farm girl in me, I've ran into all sorts of critters in their element and in mine..if you don't bother them, they will not bother you.  Curiosity in animals not familiar with humans is normal.....coyotes are canines, just like dogs.....it's all in how you present yourself to them if you should ever meet one.  And yeah, I've bumped into them before....I didn't stare directly into his eyes, and stood my ground.....eventually, the male just went away.....probably no more than 2 minutes actually passed.  I'd turn my back on a coyote long before I'd turn my back on a domesticated strange dog.....I"ve been attacked by dogs before with absolutely no provocation on my part.

Yes, attacks happen....the lady had a dog with her, the pack saw it as prey/food, she got attacked probably trying to save her dog, or because she ran.  But again, more domesticated dogs attack people than wild dogs/coyotes.

And MM, my mom says that ranchers out in the high country also put llamas in with their horses and cattle for the same reason.....but they are mean, ornery critters too.  I commend you for trying to get it back in it's corral!

Vendaval -> RE: Coyotes (7/21/2009 12:53:52 AM)

Holly, all the howling might also be feral dogs or another farmer's hunting hounds joining in on the chorus line out yonder.

Anyone know if human pee will repel any critters? Maybe drink a 12 pack of beer or couple pots of coffee and go mark the fence?

LaTigresse -> RE: Coyotes (7/22/2009 9:10:04 AM)

I sent generic dude out to "scent mark" a young peach tree the lunatic buck (deer) was rubbing last fall. In hopes that he would get the hint and leave it alone.

The tree died.......
