Which brings up the dictionary example of high risk behavior: Shaving with a straight razor while driving on the Pulaski Skyway.

Hey, we covered that... lol... few posts back. Im all honesty, i agree with the writer. We are driving around in a metal arsenal, aimed at everyone in our path, and we are playing with toys/radios/phones/makeup/smoking.. ect.

I believe its stupidity that kills - it works the same with driving as it does with such as gun ownership or knife possession. The plain fact is that a huge proportion of the population are stupid, yet we must not in any circumstance deviate from the notion that all are equal, and as a consequence we must all be treated as stupid so as not to risk heresy against the equality orthodoxy.

The problem is where do you draw the line. Cant smoke while driving? Cant eat while driving? Cant change radio stations while driving? Cant talk to a passenger while driving? Cant put on make up while driving? All of them are arguably at least as distracting as talking on a cell phone hands free. (And yes, in CA there are women who smoke, talk and put on make up all at the same time while driving)

Huh?  The proverbial slippery slope?  How about a mandatory 10 years (every day) if you kill someone?  Bet the choices become clearer.

And, you will get out of jail before the dead person rises from the dead.

Wow, there's some truly incompetent folks behind the wheel. They can't TALK and drive at the same time????? Talking on a "hands-free" device is no different than talking to someone in the vehicle with you. So these people find it "easier to drive drunk" than to drive while talking with their hands free? Damn, I'm always scared when I get on the road with so many idiots but this really ratchets my fear up a notch or two. Who knew talking while steering was so, so difficult?

luci

Three members of my family have been hit by some fool driving and trying to use a cell phone.  $10,000 is too low a fine.  The last accident had everyone stopped for a red light; everyone except the idiot on the phone.

I'm sorry to hear that but again, I maintain my point. If someone cannot drive correctly while talking HANDS-FREE, then we should ban all talking inside the vehicle while driving because one is basically the same as the other. If I cannot speak and focus on driving at the same time - whether the person is at the other end of a cell phone or in the passenger seat - then I shouldn't be behind the wheel. The people who hit your family members could have been equally distracted by just about anything, I'd wager.......luci

There's an interesting bit of psychology: When you're talking with someone in the next seat, you know they can see your face, which means you worry less about getting your words precisely correct. When they're on the phone, you have to devote a lot more attention to the conversation, because you know those visual body-language cues aren't there.

EDIT: Lest I be accused of talking out my ass, I'll try to dredge up the study that I got this from. Back later.

Now see, I think exactly the opposite of what you said above. It would seem to me that when talking with someone in the vehicle, one would be more animated and into the conversation (perhaps even often looking over or back at the person) whereas talking into a hands-free cellphone, I would be more focused on listening and not as "into" the conversation. I would think a person would be more focused while talking hands-free than when face-to-face with another. Meh...just one opinion versus another.......luci

Good Grief Charlie Brown.   Wilber's Mad Cow Disease is spreading. We will have to hire Denny Crane for a class action against all cell manufacturers; banning the use of cell phones in a motor vehicle is apparently our only recourse in solving these momentous problems.
