Status: offline 		Has anyone got a favorite scary book? I have been trying to find one that really gets to me, and I have not found anything really mind blowing. Psychological thrillers usually do it, or supernatural horrors that arent completely predictable. I dont care if its by an author no one but you have ever heard of, I am willing to put some work into tracking down a great story.

Not necessarily scary in the horror sense...more delightfully disturbing.  I read this in day...put it down/picked it up/rinse-repeat...it was that engaging.

Status: offline 		I have read the Exorcist, thats exactly the kind of story I am talking about. The sort that you arent exactly sure you want to sleep with the lights out after...

I havent started on clive barker, but I was thinking about picking something of his up when i am at the library.

Status: offline 		Clive Barker is exactly what you're looking for. Look for the early work as suggested - I reread him from time to time just to get the bejesus scared out of me again and I even know what's going to happen lol.
I've read the others that were suggested by other posters and will agree that they're all good as well. There is a weird little book called Dark Carnival that I remember reading that was one of the scariest books I've ever read- not sure if it's still in print but it stands out in my memory as a work that absolutely frightened me and I slept with the light on for a few nights.

For creepy you can try The Shining by Stephen King - the movie wasn't bad but the book is so much better...

its a comedy horror, i found some parts of it pretty creepy, and its a weird good book.

Status: offline 		Some of Dean Koontz's stuff would fit the bill as well. For medical themed thriller, I enjoy Robin Cook.

Also, the Amityville Horror is a selection to consider.

I knocked a washcloth off the faucet and it landed on my stomach as the clown grabbed one of the kids... I didnt know from that prone a position I could jump OUT of a tub. I have read every stephen king book he wrote before he started running out of ideas. Some of dean koontz stuf is great, some is just wierd.

Thanks all for the ideas, my reading list had gotten very crime dramaish lately, and while thats not bad, I like a good horror too.

EXCELLENT book, fantastic in fact. Anything by this author Erik Larson, is great. I've read this one and I'm still trying to find Isaac's Storm, about the deadliest hurricane known to man hit Galveston in 1900 and how he tried to warn people to flee.

I got to the point where the narrator is in a train and she's asleep but she knows the vampire (a bad one, not a sexy one) is in the same car with her, pretending to read the newspaper.

I cannot pick it back up. 

I don't like scary.

DV, I made the dumbass mistake of finishing up The Amityville Horror right at the strike of midnight, where the big black whatever is raising hell and coming down the stairs and the family is getting ready to run for their lives. I DID NOT sleep that fucking night and haven't touched the book since then. I had to sleep with the lights on for some time after that one....
