I fail to see the wisdom in totally scrapping a useful vehicle and expending the resources to produce a brand new one to replace it. It never seemed "environmentally friendly" to me and given that was one of the motives I thought the program was based on prevarications from the start.

And in the wonderful world of unintended consequences, how is the scrapping of 700,000 used cars, instead of somebody driving them until the wheels fall off, going to impact the prices of cars that low-income people can afford?

No, sir. The bailouts won't affect my decision to buy another Japanese car.

But Ugly, do you really like driving around in a "girly car?"
It really is odd to see a "Guy" getting out of a Honda, VW, or Toyota etc unless he's like a lawyer or something with really soft hands and "some real purdy lips." It makes one wonder just how,....."sensitive" he is.
I mean would you pick up a chick for a date in such a car? What are they going to think; "Oh, oh, this guy probably works in the mailroom!"
"A Honda? He must be a tightwad!" "Oh no! a V.W., if he has "The Village People" playing on the radio I'm bailing!"
"Oh a SUBARU, gee,....IMPRESS me why don't you!"
Young stupid guys drive those kind of cars.
Those cars say; "Yup, I still live with my parents in the "man cave"!
"Yes I'm a waiter but it's only "temporary" until I get a few more degrees then I'll be the Maire Dee."
"Starbucks isn't a "terrable" place to work, I could still be working security at the Mall harrassing the teeny boppers!."
For about $15k you can get a used two year old Mercury Gran Marquis with low milage that rides just like a Lincoln, looks great and is dependable and tough as a tank. Or for $25k you can get a two year old Cadillac that looks sharp as hell and has all the bells and whistles. Now those are the kind of cars you want to be rolling up to a babe's house in not a tuna fish can.
People drive Hondas, Toyotas, VWs because they "have to" not because they want to.
You see someone who hit the lottery and what do they run out and buy, a Honda? Nay, Nay, they buy a Caddy, Lincoln, Mercedes etc. Or a $50k pickup all tricked out.

Wow, that's awfully presumptuous of you. I've owned one or more of the cars you mentioned. I could easily have bought a Mustang or an F-150, but I got what I wanted. I did this while in the military. So, I let my uniform speak for itself as to the kind of guy I am, not the car I drove.

If I won the lottery tomorrow, I certainly wouldn't touch a Cadillac, Lincoln *or* Mercedes. I wouldn't take one of those if you gave it to me, especially the Cadillac. Every Cadillac commercial I've seen recently has some chick driving it and talking about the "boys club" seeing her in one, or whatever. You wanna talk chick cars? That's one make down, in my opinion. If anything, I'm considering a Lancer for my next car. I like that they're small and yet have an assload of power. I'd also consider a Civic because they have 'just enough' power while also being built like tanks. I used to own one, until it saved my life. The car died, sure.. But I'm still here.

The days where people are judged (or care if they are judged) by the type of car they drive are long gone. I recently had a long-haired, rock band-playing neighbor, who had a HOT girlfriend and they rolled in a Prius. You might....I don't know....join the 21st century sometime.

Actually they are made in Korea. They also have a 10 year / 100,000 mile warranty, something the US makers won't do or are afraid to do.

Yeah, I know where they are made.

And I bet you have one of those American flag magnets hanging on it too.

At this point, I'd like to point out how much of those "American" cars are manufactured in mexico, china,Taiwan ect.

and how many Toyota's are made right here in california...

Over the last 20 years I've owned three Mercury cars and three Ford pickups and now a Lincoln MKS and haven't had any problems with them.
The trucks were incredably tough and reliable! Hyundai may need to have a 100,00 mile warranty, a Ford pick-up isn't "broken in" until it has 200,000 miles on it.
Oh sure, you could buy a Lexus for $60k and after it goes off warranty you'd go broke paying three times as much for parts and repairs, basically a Toyota with leather seats and 50 more horsepower, awful cars for the consumer and a money pit for Toyota. "This is my towtruck driver Freddy."
"Sure the exhaust system cost me $3,800 to replace but I can afford it." That happened to a friend of mine, he had to replace a part that he could hold in his hand for $380 and a whole bunch of other things too. He spent a small fortune on that POS Lexus before wising up and getting rid of it and buying a Corvette. It seemed like every other week the Lexus was "in the shop" and I let him borrow my Mercury to go where he needed to go.
Funny, people remember cars from 30 years ago when many of them (were) crap but, that was 30 years ago! Today American cars are just as good and in many cases better than imports. Everyone I know always had good luck with Fords/Mercurys/ Ford Trucks.
And the CEO of Ford, Alan Mulally is doing an outstanding job.
Wait till you see the new Ford Taurus for the 2010 model year!

on a few point here I'll hafta agree with ya, but I've never seen nutt'n keep on truck'n like a little four cylinder toyota beater truck, and while most of the car manufactures seen here in the us have become pretty uniform in performance(hell, every one cept harley was make'n a gas guzzl'n suv), where they Differ the most is the actual engineering , While most manufactures hire the best and brightest engineering grads straight outa school, others like VW like to collect engineers from their former technicians(as well as blowing money on fresh faced retards)...

Now Motor Cycles on the other hand, that's where America is still hopelessly behind

I have a Hyundai and will buy another one.

Good choice.

And keep buying those made in China blue-light specials at Wal-Mart, make sure you buy the quality Japanese tv and sound system, and then be sure to stop back and tell us how Obama is ruining the economy.

My Nissan was built in Tennessee....where do they build the Chevy Impala?

Loki, guys still living at home with their parents in the "man cave" is the 21st century.
You don't see those guys driving around in F-150's or Lincolns or Caddys do you? No, they drive around in little weenie cars that scream, "spoiled little boy in short pants!"

Actually Popeye, IME, people driving large expensive cars are often the ones living in their parent's basements as they otherwise couldn't afford 40 or 50k for a car. I've lived on my own since I was 17 and the 2 new cars I've owned were an Escort and a Prius. I bought both because I care about one thing only when I'm driving, doing it as inexpensively as possible. Some people do not think of cars as status symbols or compensation for having a small dick.

DomKen .... you sure you want to say that, exactly that way?

On to other things ....

My point was that the "stimulus package" here, looks like it didn't really "stimulate" much of anything, long term.  Or even short term.

Decevious, of course not, chicks who work at Barnes and Noble drive Toyotas and Hondas. Sorry about the dick thing, can you get an implant?
My carbon footprint is Huge!
I don't now anyone who drives a Caddy or Lincoln who lives in their parent's basement, their parents are usually dead by then.
Don't get me wrong though, I like to see people driving around in small cars, more gas for me.
I filled the Lincoln up last night at Costco with high-test for $42 bucks, Muaaaah ha,ha!
And it goes like a bastard when I floor it!

Again, that's awedully presumptuous of you.

You are aware, I hope, that the economy tanked, yes? I saw a news report that showed stats on how many college graduates had to return home because their bachelor-degree requiring job didn't pay enough for student loans and rent.

That being said, none of that really matters because people drive what they want. Just because you, with your incredibly narrow minded and presumptuous nature, want to make assumptions on why people drive what they drive doesn't make it so.

I'll tell you right now, the best car I ever owned was my Civic. I shopped around, looked at many and could easily have afforded what I wanted. Know what? I *wanted* the Civic. It turned out to be a wise move when I was in a crash that totalled my car, but left me perfectly fine.
