What i mean is that we had values, scruples, we knew the difference between right and wrong. today i feel like nobody really cares any more. It starts as simple as running a stop sign. To me, what else is next? The line blurred long ago and i wonder what is next for us as people?
To me what defines you is what you do when nobody is looking..Even though people are looking today i think they don't care...until they get caught...

Of course people still have values and scruples, it's just with the media being what it is, we hear about about people's failings in life on a much broader scale. What was youthful indiscretion in the past, is now youtube fodder seen by millions. What was internal marital struggles is now paraded on the Jerry Springer show for the whole to ridicule. I don't think people are any worse than they ever were. Heck, just read a Bible and you can see that's true. We just have more opportunity to see and hear about it now. If you want to see something better, you might consider where you are looking- the neighbor who cuts an elderly neighbor's grass, the child who collects coins for the homeless, the lady in line with you at the grocery store who is buying items for a food pantry, the teenager who goes to the nursing home to visit with the patients simply because it's a nice thing to do, the groups who plant flowers or pick up trash in a depressed neighborhood. Those people are out there doing things every day without drawing much attention to themselves. There is still plenty of good in the world, and many opportunities for us to do good ourselves.

I think it's easy to feel this way when people are so willing to expose their shortcomings a la the Springer show. Chained Existence speaks the truth though. There are still plenty of people willing to do the right or good thing simply because it IS the right or good thing to do.

What is sad is how far back the not caring goes... did you know that 20% of all American Children are raided Primarily by Grandparents? That means the People who Raised us are also raising our children and they are still all fucked up.

The problem is that everyone wants there to be a global standard of how children are reared and what is sad is that the common denominator in America is that they should be free to do what they like.

Dad... He used a Belt. I have a set understanding of right and wrong and when I did wrong I received a punishment that made the crime not worth committing again. Today I am not even able to raise MY OWN child this way because everyone ELSE thinks it's wrong to do so.

Parental Control have been replaced with this easier softer way bullshit and we wonder why our youth are consistantly FUCKED when it comes to moral values.

I personally think if you're a good and effective parent you don't need to belt your kids or hit them. My mom could slap us across the face  * one of her favorite ways of "handling her kids too" or spank us on the butt all day long and it didn't stop any behavior just made me hate her, eroded what little bond we did have, and swear I'd never raise a hand to my kids the way she did us.  I wanted nothing to do with my mom after she was done hitting or spanking  me. However my dad threatend us with a very cold shower clothing and all, I sure in the hell  straitened up and flew right, that was unpleasant enough to faze me.

But that's just me.

i think this is an impossible question as each persons parents raised them differently. society and its values change over time so people are probly raising their kids in a slightly different light nowadays,
i dont think the world is falling to shit tho, granted it isnt like the good old days where kids repected their elders and poloticions wernt crooked and such...
really tho i  think things are going fair, with internet providing a sorce of opinions from all sorts of walks of life unavailable to previous generations, racism, sexist, homophobia and other discrimination tho they will always be around seem to be way less widly acceptable on legal and social grounds.
sure there will be assholes who run redlights but i dont think its a sign of the apocholypse around the corner, some people have stronger ethics than their parents some people will have less, such is life,
i dont think the new generations are reckless monsters any more than the last.

There is a fine line between discipline and abuse when it comes to kids. However, I never had a problem giving my kids a swat in the shorts when they needed it, and I didn't care where  we were or who was watching. I am pleased to say that they are both great young adults now with a good sense of morals and social values.

What it comes down to is that people don't instill the simple moral values in their kids these days. I was always taught to respect your parents, and respect your elders. Treat others the way you want to be treated. Don't lie or cheat. Work hard to get what you want. Never "expect" anything from anyone.

the times surely are a changing.
its almost frightening for me to watch my peers and their interactions with their parents...and half the things they got away with...never flew in my parents house and dont fly in my house.  Yes there is a fine line between discipline and abuse...quite a shame but as a competent, responsible adult who has an offspring...its my business and no one elses.
personally...instill some fear in the youngn's and they'll always know better. I surely did and mine certainly does

I just think we now live in a society where it is acceptable and excusable to be less than courteous, respectful ...i think its now chalked up to "freedom of expression"

Parents have to teach the next generation how to BE parents.  Based on the parenting I've seen on shows like Supernanny and Nanny 911, some people just aren't doing that.  Hovering over kids, pampering them constantantly and "talking" with them instead of correcting the behavior just doesn't work.

It's all about the "Mom Look".....my kids are 25 & 27 and they still move when I do it, lol.  Of course, we laugh about it now, but my son disciplines his daughter the same way, and she's a well-behaved kid underneath the orneriness.

Best grandkid ever!

I have been thinking of this for a while.  In a funny way I think I raised myself.  I am 12 yrs younger than the oldest in my family.  My parents spanked, scolded and punished the older kids but I was not similarly treated.
I had the opportunity to view what not to do, or how to avoid being caught.  lol in an odd way it was like when new criminals go to prison and come out knowing more.  I got to see my siblings F up, and learn how to avoid their fate.
I don't particularly feel their generation did a great job, producing more fabulous offspring then the current generation does.  I do think what is lacking is understanding compassion by observation.  My grandmother was someone who could attract animals.  She fed, talked to, and cared for injured creatures and I learned about how everything could be hurt or helped in someones hands.  It is the up close and personal observation that made me start to reason things out.
I think they have computer software that teaches that now, somehow I don't think it is the same thing.

These dad burned whippersnappers today....  Why I had to walk 3 miles to school (uphill both ways) in the snow and ice even in the springtime....

I agree that it's society that's changing, but also due to an economic downturn, many families have to have both parents work to pay the mortgage or rent.   My mom stayed home to raise us, and I was a stay at home mom.   I give an enormous amount of credit to any single parent who can raise their young 'uns and pay their bills, and have a smile at the end of the day.  [Insert "Hee Haw" Saaaa- lute! here.]  Growing up, I knew every family on my block.  It was like having a dozen extra eyes watching out for the kids.

I feel kids today (damn, I'm my mom now) grow up too soon.  "Latchkey" kids are almost raising themselves on TV and the internet, and their parents are working longer hours just to get by month to month.  (Don't get me started on charge cards & buy today/pay later immediate gratification...)

Getting off my soapbox now.

*nods*

The first thing that comes to mind is "lazy parenting"...it is easier to be their buddy then their parent.

growing up- the adults would get all hush hush when there was talk of a a "broken home".

I was lucky.

I had good parents- and time and place was very good to me.

I now am old enough to be grandfather.  yikes!!!!

I wish school would start because I am going crazy with all the noise around here.

Or get seriously T boned, and then  in which case it's the same as being caught but 10 times more serious and potentially deadly than just getting caught by a cop.

Yup, the parents on these shows let their children become horrible ill behaved little monsters who terrorize any one and every one in their space,  and out of desperation and because they don't know what to do any more they call  show's like Super Nanny and Nanny 911. And yet as horrible as the kids are,  you never once see Nanny jo jo or any of the other Nannies hitting the kids, in any way and the nannies can get the kids to behave. Now this is television and not everything on tv can be believed but if professional nannies can get kids to behave properly with out resorting to spanking or hitting or belting in ANY FORM, then I believe parents can to.* maybe with the exception of a child who has to be shown how their behavior hurts, like the one special needs kid who had to be tackled to the ground to know it hurts and they shouldn't do it other  wise he wouldn't stop* Or maybe the Nannies can do this because they're professionals  and have the skills to do this and parents are not and do not.

I don't know.

THis is a GENERALIZATION based on personal experiences that you choose to dwell on.

This week a homeless boy I took in for 3 weeks is helping me move cause I need help.

I walked a ways with a kid off the street this week...he had been beaten up and was bloody and bruised..as we walked he talked of his dreams...
Suddenly he ran ahead of me, picked a big daisy and ran back..
"I want you to be happy" he said

I saw 2 young ppl help a really old stooped lady with her parcels..

A young woman at the bank went out of her way to find me info she did not have to

A young cab driver..knew I only had so much money one day last week and when the meter went to that amount he shut it off

A young bakers helper at the grocery store brought out cupcakes for my grandsons

I am going to DWELL on this as WHO the young ppl are today...
THEY CARE...
and often IF we do too
