'What makes a country great and strong? I think it is local resources. We could, if we had to, survive on our own... We have coal, oil, food, iron, transportation, and industry' Bad example. Coal, oil and iron are non-renewable resources, not to mention the coal and oil reserves of the US are dwindling. Hence the dependence on foreign sources such as saudi arabia. I never really understood this logic given that canada has the larges oil reserves in the world (northern alberta) which would make it simple to just buy the oil in north america and wash their hands of the middle east - at least as far as oil goes. I just assumed it was more to do with wanting to control those resources themselves. Getting to the point though, the US will likely not be the world leader forever. Things change, nothing lasts forever. Do you really think in 10,000 years the US or the world will still be in the same political situation it is now? That may be a bad example given that by then I assume there will be at least a few colonized planets and therefore the balance of power would shift more toward planetary politics rather than country-based politics and power. A little in the future but you get the idea. So in short, yes eventually the US will cease to be the world leader it is now. It most likely will not happen anytime soon but it will happen. Though I doubt it will be in the same manner of the Roman Empire. There were many different reasons that Rome fell and in the manner in which it did. I'm more inclined to believe that it will be suplanted by another world power. China, Japan, Russia or something along those lines.
