I have a friend of Mine who has been, needless to say, convicted of a DUI and one of her requirements is DUI/substance abuse classes, anyone ever take these? What do they consist of, what's expected?

Any insight I can plass along would be appreciated.

many of them are basically AA/NA meetings, or something similar.

Actually it depends on what level of care she was recommended. Do You have any idea how many hours she was ordered to do for treatment? If she was ordered to do the two or three day classes they will be nothing like AA/NA meetings and actually will focus mostly on harm reduction issues. If she has to do 75 hours of treatment she was most likely found to be dependent on alcohol (or whatever substance she was convicted of driving under the influence of) and so harm reduction will no longer be an option. There are a lot of factors that go into this.....  Sadly, i must go to work though...
grrrr...
i will cmail You though.

Was it an actual conviction, or a 'deferred entry of judgement'?

Well here in Onio there is a mandatory three consecutive days in jail for DUI, but a licensed facility can be attended in lieu of actual jail. Last time I caught one was in 2004, and even though the charge was reduced (a hard thing to do in Ohio these days) they made it part of the sentence. I mainly went to appease, jail would not bother me for three days. My lawyer came out of the prosecutor's office with a paper and said "sign here". I asked him what happened to this charge and that charge he said gone. I paid the money and went in to the McIntyre "seminar".

Here they are usually held at a hotel or motel. You can actually walk out the door, but then you would have to restart. They used tape on the room doors. The food was better than in jail except for the (ugh) pizza every night. They did let us out for smoke breaks, and you could smoke in your room.

Generally in addition to watching some videos of gory accidents and carefully selected movies, they have speakers come in and tell of some of the stupid things they did while drunk. Some lost everything. I can say this, some of these stories, if they don't teach you not to drink and drive, at least serve as a refresher course on safe driving. The whole ordeal is at least tolerable unless you are a stone alcoholic and go into knipshits if you don't drink.

I found it way better than tolerable, in fact I learned a few things. I think it helped me be a more careful driver, drinking or not. The people were quite friendly and you can actually talk to them, but all of these things are not equal. I went to the best one on the list. Upon entering I was told "Now if you meet any celebrities in here or something you can't go around telling people. No matter who you meet, if you meet up afterwards, maintain their anonymity as they will your's". Something like that, you get the drift.

All in all it wasn't bad, except for the pizza without beer.

So tell your "friend" to go and make the most of it. It is hard enough to drive these days, it is even harder to drive when you are inebriated (sp). Whether or not it did me any good is hard to say, but it was better than jail. I know this much, after the whole ordeal I am about $2500 more careful on the road.

You kids today..... I didn't have to go to classes to get a DUI. I got my with no training at all.

Actually, from friends I've had who went to them, Term has it about right. I once had to go to a driving course over excessive speeding tickets. It was the same thing.

My thanks to everyone who posted here and on the other side, though not an alcholic or far from a drunk, this has scared her awake--a bad decision in a bad night after an argument and one two many wines at dinner---it does impact one's decisions--so no matter what, I know she has already learned a valuable lesson--your insights and as always knowledge has been extremely helpful. I am her friend not her enabler---which is as it should be.

Cat, sometimes I seem to close threads, though I don't mean to, but nonetheless;

I do understand that people go to bars, and while I don't condone drunk friving, it is an art. Some are very good at it and never get popped. I know a guy drank a fifth of run every day, and when he got stopped they didn't even ask him if he was drinking. He could literally drive even if he couldn't walk. In fact I know two people like that. They have both operated large machinery and driven some pretty big trucks.

Certain things come natural to some people, but not to others. A little town called Linndale got me and they are known for that. Even in Cleveland court if they bring up anything about it you can retort "But that's Linndale". I am not kidding. And some people can really see, for miles and miles. Would you rather I drive you home drunk or blind ?

It takes experience and something. One person was an OTR driver frequently charged with hauling oversize loads, like halves of prefab houses, missile parts and such. The othe was a high boom crane operator. They both had excellent eyesight. Also they could hold their liquor, so their judgement was as impaired as some migh think. These things make for a good drunk driver, and I would let them drive home from the bar almost anytime. Of course they have their limits also.

But the thing is most people don't know how to drive in the first place. I let Hunter drive the jimmy, he backs out of my drive about a foot and then has to swing the wheel way over the other way to get going. I asked him "Why didn't you finish backing up ?". He had no clue. Then I told him, backup until you are straight with the road, then all you have to do is straighten out the wheel and go. I still don't think it sunk in. Some people don't learn.

I also learned from my OTR buddies, anything without a valid rear view mirror, you back into a driveway, PERIOD. You simply can't see when you are trying to back out otherwise. I also learned how to play the time game with traffic lights. Actually Rif claims he could almost drive to California without touching the brakes, and I almost believe him.

Wolfman simply can't get drunk. He spent years trying but I don't think he ever actually did it. I mean you could pour whiskey down this guy's throat and it just wouldn't faze him a bit. No staggering or swaggering, nothing. Like I said, the cops wouldn't even ask him if he was drinking.

Why couldn't I be like that ? It would've saved me hundreds of thousands of dollars. I could ue that monet about now. Young and dumb and full of cum, that's about the way to put it.

All in all I dont know whether the DUI course is there to teach you how to drink or drive. But I know this much, if I have to drive along way, like forty miles or something, one beer is plenty. Maybe not even one.

Yes people I can live without beer, even without smokes or smoke. For however long it takes.
