well. this goes out to everyone. in general.
When you have reached the point where you wish for a physical collar. an embodiment so to speak. of the emotional ownership already in effect. which collar would you choose for your sub? and subs, which collar would you prefer to wear?
i am asking out of curiosity and because i have been unable to find any threads with this particular question. it is a question of individual aesthetics of course. my own preference leans to the Drop ring Chevron collar found here.http://www.lockedinsteel.com/?Cat=96&CatName=Chevron%20Collars what is your personal preference?

I really like the one you linked to. It is beautiful. I like that either a male or female can wear it. I prefer a necklace myself. Something that he can wear everyday without anyone taking notice of it. Although a nice necklace does draw it's own attention  My former sub had several collars. One to work in, sleep in, playtime and his permanent one. He really liked collars and always wanted to have one on.

One that fits your life. A leather and d-ring collar isn't going to go well at a PTA meeting or in a law firm if you're above mail room level.

I wear a necklace with a heart pendant that was hand made by a local artisan.

Pretty collar, although I could never wear something like that..  it would drive me nuts.

Not that collars fit into our dynamic, but if they did, I'd go with a simple necklace.

Carol wears a rolled leather dog collar (medium dog I think). As I remember the damned thing was $14.95 at Petco and we are now stuck with it for the rest of our freakin lives. I need to remember to say that when some newcomer asks for tips...

#1) The first collar you put on your girl will have emotional significance.... choose it with care.

I've also had her make an upscale version of same for going out. That version is made out of a flat blackened silver mesh but still has a standard "buckle" closure like the dog collar.

I am not much interested in collars of any sort really, other than maybe some sort of symbolic necklace. So in my case it would pretty much be whatever the sub wanted...I know that's very undomly of me, but I really don't care one way or the other.

it's pretty, but thats a little ostentacious for me. I'd go with the vanilla chevron collar myself. But thats just ME mind you. I'm sure your pet will look beautiful in it.

in my eyes there is no right or wrong in the terms of which symbol to choose or who chooses it even. maybe that is undomly of me. but some people would be more radiant in one type of collar or without one. than others. thank you though sunnyfey. i am pretty sure she will look positively vibrant wearing it.

for me it had to be sterling silver, because i work in the health care profession - needs to be washed daily, and because i am allergic to anything with nickle in it - which includes stainless steel.
The symbolism of the collar was very important to me at the time - - - two years later, not as important. I am so much more confident in our relationship now that a physical symbol is almost redundant.

If i had to choose a different collar now, i would go with a sterling silver necklace - as in chain necklace. The solid sterling collar was uncomfortable at times, and even though Sir tells me that my comfort isn't the primary thing, when you are sleeping, it tends to be important.

Tis a pretty collar, but no I couldn't wear anything like that it wouldnt fit my life at all to be honest to wear something as obvious as that you need to be already pretty alternative. I also agree that it looks really uncomfy.I don't have much time for collars, I have never had one really I used to be obsessed with the idea of them I really did but I think that was a stupid obsession to fit in, now I dont give a toss

Not all stainless steel contains nickel.  There is no nickel present in any of the 400 series stainless steels.

In my experience, symbols tend to take on the appearance of the emotions invested in them. When Carol & I got married, we were poor. Our wedding rings are dirt-cheap, very plain, low-carat gold. They are the most beautiful wedding rings to us. The collar, as I noted above, is a store brand dog collar from petco yet I cannot bear to replace it, even with something that ought to normally appeal to my sensibilities like the various tiffany's pieces.

I probably should have been more forthcoming in what I referred to in my collar choices. Depending on choice I can make a collar from leather either very plain or with all the hand carved decorations and other additives. I can also make a collar using a combination of both leather (for fastening) with the main part out of chain-maile. Alternatively I can make a metal collar from either stainless steel of from Damascus steel forged by me with double hinges and hidden locking at the rear. For social occasions I favour a high Victorian Chocker make from velvet with a suitable cameo at the front. I have made a Mistress Collar for Lady Neets, my wife and partner, from cord using a double coin knot pattern and tied at the back.

Fox's collar is a simple stainless steel ball chain, wrapped in hemp. He is also allergic to nickel, and so we had a rough time finding something that worked, but this works wonderfully (and we found wedding rings in the same material) He wears his engagement ring on the collar as well. If curious, it is visible in the first photo on his profile.

I envy you your "handiness" IronBear. I would've liked to make the collar that Carol wears but given our relative propensities (I'm not allowed to use a screwdriver because I hurt myself with them), it was her that did the fabrication (oh, and the jokes that spawned out of that... "What, not only do I have to give you my freedom, but I have to make my own collar too?" *chuckles*). I did the design. Still though, it'd be neat if i was different and could do even some of the things you listed in your post.

It will be a collar I make myself, not sure beyond that. I might fire up the old forge, just for that.

My slaveboy only wears VadFarkas.

http://www.ringofsteel.net/

He will custom make your order, so you can get cuffs and collars that fit rather snugly, or ones that are looser and have a lot of play. They are polished metal (no rough edges) and they screw on with an allen wrench. Vad will take your order and make your item to your specs, and send it right to you in about a millisecond. And the price is right.

My slaveboy loves how smooth and heavy, and aesthetically pleasing they are.

I would not select a collar in advance; I would select a collar based upon the wearer.
