kdsub -> RE: Real Astroturf vs. The Fake Stuff (8/7/2009 10:03:06 AM)

I hate fanatics…here in Missouri there was a town hall meeting on aging. A large crowd of mostly senior citizens had gathered to get information on the proposed healthcare legislation. They consisted of people of all political affiliations.

A small group of the local Tea Party Coalition split into two groups…one entering the building and the other passing out fliers outside and blocking the entrance.

The group inside disrupted the meeting not allowing anyone to speak… they were shouting Sieg Heil and Tea party slogans.

Outside they assaulted a minister who was trying to stop them from blocking the entrance to the building dislocating his shoulder.

Then three black union extremists showed up and because one of the Tea Party extremists was also black they called him the N word then punched him in the face.

Local Republican Party representatives disavow the Tea Party calling it a grass roots coalition. The black union rep said his people did not assault anyone yet the three were arrested after witnesses said they did.

Damn the extremists on both sides… I don’t think Sanity is condoning this behavior of Tea Party extremist…he just does not know the true details of their actions. I do because three people I know were there… The funny thing all three are conservatives… They said they were ashamed of the Tea Party disruptors and they were trying to provoke a response.

Hillwilliam -> RE: Real Astroturf vs. The Fake Stuff (8/7/2009 10:03:53 AM)

It was the same during the bush years just the other way.  Any dissent was "unpatriotic and there was always that nebulous "Department of homeland security"  as well as "no warrant wiretaps"

Mercnbeth -> RE: Real Astroturf vs. The Fake Stuff (8/7/2009 10:17:01 AM)

Contrary to the campaign slogan-ism Guantanamo is still open and active - Maybe now we know why. Perhaps there are plans for it to be the first camp to house the 'Dissonants'? At least it provides an answer as to why the Administration, with a filibuster proof plurality, doesn't close it with a pen-stoke?

A previous regime, similarly intent on curtailing criticism, already has provided a nice color code for identification purposes:
  • Red triangle — political prisoners (social democrats, trade unionists, liberals, communists, Freemasons, anarchists.) Some anarchists, and other "enemies of the state," were also given a black triangle.
  • Green triangle — "habitual criminals" (convicts, ofttimes Kapos, serving in exchange for reduced sentences or parole).
  • Blue triangle — foreign forced laborers, emigrants.
  • Pink triangle — sexual offenders which included homosexuals along with rapists, bestiality and pedophiles.
  • Purple triangle — "Bible Students" (Jehovah's Witnesses).
  • Black triangle — people who were deemed "asocial elements,"
  • Brown triangle — Roma (Gypsies)

slvemike4u -> RE: Real Astroturf vs. The Fake Stuff (8/7/2009 11:02:46 AM)

Are you actually suggesting that this Administration has a secret plan to arrest and illegally detain citizens?
You are ,of course joking ....are you not?
It's getting a little scary around here, what with all the outlandish and dire predictions made by those on the right.....Doom and gloom behind every corner....it's getting just a little difficult to separate the facetious from the delusional.
Can't help but wonder where was all of this outrage as Bush shredded the Constitution? How was the Patriot Act allowed to be foisted on such a vigilant populace?

Sanity -> RE: Real Astroturf vs. The Fake Stuff (8/7/2009 11:12:33 AM)

Things are evolving, things were different initially. Obama has called up his Acorn people and his Union people like you say,  and the tea party activists are responding to the White House's call to "hit back twice as hard" with their own mobilization.

Things are indeed getting very ugly, but put the blame where it is due.

Don't you just love this quote?

Yeah,Sanity I actually like that quote...seems entirely reasonable to me.The Clinton's attempt to reform health care is this country was derailed ,in part,by mistakenly inviting those currently reaping the benifits from the dysfunctional system to sit at the table.
No thanks ....we the American people do not need to hear from them...!

Ah Godwin. The final retreat of someone who cannot defend his position.

Interesting perspective DK.

It would seem the position that is indefensible is rebuttal. The activities presented by all the links document the response by the Democratic Party. I represent they are no better or worse than the GOP, but you seem to see a distinction.

Since you are the one avoiding the reference - What's up with Gitmo? I remember it being the FIRST thing this Administration signed - Its still open and occupied. Why?

Another question would be what position am I defending?

See my comment for what it is - an attack, not a retreat, on the hypocrisy of the Administration as well as the party in control of the White House, and Congress.

No vote, policy, action, or LACK of action; can be pointed to any other party.

The point is the blame is with extremists on both sides... not people mobilized by Obama or the Republican Party...

What we need is both sides to step up and condemn these actions of extremists rather then set back and blame the other party.

Which you are doing… you are falling into the trap and being used by the very extremists you are ranting against.

Sanity -> RE: Real Astroturf vs. The Fake Stuff (8/7/2009 12:29:31 PM)

The point of the thread was to ask for evidence that the initial dissenters were actually extremists as you claim, or if they were in fact true grass roots activists.

Are you of the opinion that we should have no right to speak up if we disagree with what the government does? Because that would require changes to the Constitution...

Mercnbeth -> RE: Real Astroturf vs. The Fake Stuff (8/7/2009 12:38:59 PM)

I didn't think you'd be able to provide an alternative, or even a possible explanation of the Gitmo situation.

I think you need a reference to the Democratic parties position on those who which to speak against the current opposition against their social fascist agenda. Quoting the Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, protesters are "carrying swastikas and symbols like that to a town meeting on healthcare."
quote:

However, I do appreciate you posting a textbook example of retreat and surrender. You aren't alone, based upon the Democratic party posturing.

I agree, it is best for you to retreat than to defend under the circumstances.

I rarely stay in a room with a group of people having a discussion and said discussion boils down to name calling and belittlement. Its not a sign of intelligence.. but a sign of weakness when that happens. i leave you all to your discussions.

.......technically they could be both. Health care, at least in the USA, is a massively polarised debate. Pretty much the rest of the civilised world has come to a consensus on what responsibility the state has to its citizens regarding this issue. The USA has not. So, the issue becomes a sort of rallying flag for a larger debate. It's not just about health care, it's about what government is actually for. Therefore the issue engages grass roots activists and extremists........i think it could be argued there there is, on this issue, nothing but extremes.

Couldn't agree more, but it seems like a common tactic when people don't like having their side of a debate overwhelmed with pragmatic contrary facts.

Pity though, it eliminates coming to the one solution that would have a positive impact; voting against each and every incumbent at every level of government.

I appreciate the Administration's desire to get their agenda passed ASAP. I think it obvious to anyone that President Obama knew that the constituents would rebel and let their feelings be know when Congress went home for August. Now he'll have a fight from his own party when they return. He can't have a fight from any other source. The GOP is impotent, and only have a plurality with Democratic support.

The Administration and the Democratic Party leaders provided the ammunition for their constituency's reaction. They held up the Astroturf, they bring in references to Nazi's. From the White House they are told to "Punch back twice as hard!". A mirror is a very powerful weapon when its reflection generates a response of rhetoric and accusation instead of a confident commitment to their agenda. On the Health Care issue, if the program is so great - include yourself. Gitmo an unqualified embarrassment and failure - close it; international intervention into a sovereign countries, such as Iran or Afghanistan, worthy of apology - end ongoing examples of it.

Meanwhile, when cooler heads aren't obvious from the leaders such as Pelosi, Reid, and the White House; what hope is there that their followers, or their adversaries will? Unifying? Bi-Partisan? The inaugural seems like it was eight decades ago instead of eight months.

Worse than that, the reaction being observed in the face of challenge serves to indicate just how insecure they are with their position and the potential for success of their plan. I wonder if they weren't on the variety of PAC payrolls served by the health care program's implementation, if they would be attempting to pursue it at all. Obviously, when they leave the factual debate and have the reactions documented, they don't have a pragmatic confident response.

From your own reference:

However, Godwin's Law itself can be abused, as a distraction, diversion or even censorship, that fallaciously miscasts an opponent's argument as hyperbole, especially if the comparisons made by the argument are actually appropriate. A 2005 Reason magazine article argued that Godwin's Law is often misused to ridicule even valid comparisons
