President Clinton to kick off Netroots Nation with opening keynote
In June, a dozen or so bloggers got a chance to meet with President Bill Clinton for a candid discussion on a range of topics, ranging from the environment to health care to the role of today’s new progressive era.

Reading about this meeting of got us to thinking: What if President Clinton came to Netroots Nation to discuss this new progressive era? After all, governance and grassroots activism is a huge focus of our convention this year.

Well, we are thrilled to announce that President Bill Clinton will join us in Pittsburgh to help kick off our fourth annual convention on Thursday night

It seems to me that grassroots activism is ok when you are a democrat. When it is a republican , not so good. The people questioning Obamas health care bill at town hall meeting around the country are being demonized by the press.

Wow. A few months ago, Clinton was relegated to the dustheap. Last week, he scored a diplomatic coup in NK, and now he is evidently front and center.

I'm glad. Pushing him aside is not good for his ego and he gets... ugly. But give him an audience and he can do impressive things.

He was at one of their meetings in June. So its not like he is unknown to the group.

Did i say it was good or bad? not at all. i posted it for those who may wish to come to such a meeting. somehow, though, i dont get a feeling this will be a shouting down match between him and the public. and maybe that is what is needed.. some control... not only from the leaders, but from the public. i am truly looking forward to seeing the outcome, as both parties have plans for their own meetings during this time, and i have no doubt there will be lots of protests, which is indeed the american way.

Actually grass roots activism and even civil disobedience are fine for both sides. Intentionally disrupting events and violence are not. When left wingers disrupt an event they know they will be ejected and possibly arrested. When the righ wingers do it they expect to be allowed to completely shut down the discussion and have been getting violent when prevented from doing so.

Obama and his family are getting plenty of press from People, Us, etc. His is the most photogenic family since JFK.

While I disagree with many of his policies, his modus operandi is top notch when he's on top of his game. For example, the Somalian pirate mess - he was quietly in the background. No "Bring it on" saber rattling like Bush would have done.

I don't think that Obama resents Clinton the limelight as long as Obama's policies get carried out.

When republicans are asking legitimate questions about the health care bill and members congress refuse to answer those questions, that is shutting down the discussion. They work for us.

To me, after the last 8 years of lib or dem protesters being called thugs, mobs, criminals, trash and worse.... repubs are now whining cos they are being labelled the same for doing the same.
It would make me laugh but I see it getting deadly

Standing up and yelling over the talker... pressing the issue before they have a chance to answer... chanting slogans in order that the speaker not be heard... yeah, thats really productive there.

I have to laugh. At the same time the town halls from the federal level of our government are getting all the attention, here in CA, the situation is reversed for our local politicians. The public employee union, now including those who get a government subsidy to take care of their own relatives, is bringing the protesters/disrupters in by bus for the meetings held by Republicans. Everything the conservatives are being accused of is being done very deliberately by the liberals to shut down a discussion they don't like.

The hypocrisy would be stunning, if weren't so commonplace.

i cant speak for rule, but, i can toss my two cents worth in about your question, Firm. When people are aggitated, and express that aggitation by shouting, jumping up and down, screaming over others trying to talk... then no discussion is ensuing. its merely a match as to who can talk louder. in any debate, there are rules. why is that so hard for anyone to accept? you ask a question, then you wait for the answer. once you hear that answer, you ask more questions. how many times have you heard someone screaming at yiou, and heard anything bu screaming? i tend to immediately block that person out as being too out of control to continue with any meaningful dialogue.

Don't forget about filibustering. The bussed in SEIU folks at the last meeting I attended loved that one. They would get the floor for a question, and launch into a speech about how baa-aaad the Republicans were without ever getting near a question for the elected official to answer.

I've documented in the "Fake Astroturf" thread the fact that the townhalls that end up with the type of activity you are discussing are ones in which the representatives aren't interested in answering the questions that there citizens are asking.

When your elected officials have their own agenda, and refuse to listen to the point of view of a large section of their constituents, what do you think that they should do?

Especially if there is little or no time to react, since there is a great rush to pass the bill? A bill, mind you, which will have a massive affect on the entire US economy, and the lives of millions of people?
