Lessee... We could stop this ID nonsense. We could examine the texts of Christianity, Islam, and Judaism alongside those of Greek and Roman myth and really enjoy the stories. We could search for new ways to build community. We could sleep in on Saturday and Sunday. We could see an end to religiously motivated genital mutilation. We could build better ways to give and distribute charitable donations. We could see other humans as humans, rather than Sekrit Muslins and Devil Worshiping Ay-theests.

Don't you have any other ideas besides a startling rise in abortion?

btw, i read the story from Altnet. then i read a few others, like MSN, Times itself.

and i do think Times ran an accurate story, i think the Mayor did a fast talking to a few people.

http://cbs13.com/national/pregnancy.pact.gloucester.2.755690.html

http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,1817701,00.html

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,402703,00.html

so what i am getting is that these girls were pregnant, they were happy about it, and the pact was made to help each other raise their babies. and only one said there was no pact to get pregnant.

you have proposed all pros... and are assuming that money given to religious charities would find its way into other hands. i would not want to hazard that much of a guess. nor try to imagine how much could be raised quickly to replace all the charities religions do support.

so neither of you see a con?

If religion ended, I wouldn't ever make my Passover flourless chocolate torte. And that would be a pity.

You are working way too hard at this and I am really enjoying those youtubes Esinn posted, too much to take time to debunk all your silliness. If you have a perspective on this, share it, stop trying to tease it out of people who don't share your views.

Ok, seriously, we still need to have Passover even if religion is gone. I love Passover. So damn fun.

You really are an idiot. i watched as the christian ladies led girl after girl AWAY from the clinic, and applauded each and every one who left.

Gee... didja also bother to figure out who fed, clothed, and provided -care- for all those babies whose mothers your wonderful Christian ladies scared away from the abortion clinic -- and dealt with all the resulting babies born to single mothers in poverty, and to mothers still addicted to drugs, etc.

Congratulations to you.

I -also- worked at abortion clinics, and did my volunteer hours as a midwife for 15 years at homeless shelters and free birth clinics in W. Texas and NM, and can tell you that, if it weren't for religion, more than half the young teen women whom I saw who had -no- hope of bringing their child into the world and having this be a -good- thing would likely have escaped going through that torture, and so would their children, because no church would have told them that birth control was EVIL and that it was better to bring their drug-addicted, HIV-infected baby into a world where nobody, including them, would want it than to abort when they realized they'd made a mistake.

*shakes my head*

As for what would happen if all the churches closed their doors -- take a look at the USSR and see what has already happened in places where religion has been removed from people's lives -- people would just find other ways to continue to promote their own brand of ignorance and smear it all over others. There is, apparently, no avoiding humanity's need to cast our fear onto someone else.

Why the heck not. I make flourless chocolate brownies weekly and don't need a religion to do so -- I just do so because they're darned good!

... and maybe that's another pro for the pro column... maybe, if only for a moment, we'd find other reasons to do the things we love, or stop doing the things we don't, without blaming our decisions on some fantasy father-figure standing over us with either a warm blankie or a belt.

Bill Moyers Journal . Watch & Listen PBS

In his new book, THE EVOLUTION OF GOD, bestselling author Robert Wright examines how the idea of God has changed through history. Wright sits down with Bill Moyers to discuss why he thinks the notion of God is imperative to a moral society.

if religion ended, god was disproved or w/e

mass suicide pretty much, you take away a major factor of peoples belief in a powerful good force, alot of peoples reason for getting up is religious faith (misguided or not), jobs and communities would be destroyed, lives shattered, convincing the world to become athiest is one thing, but tommorow with no religion would be chaos, people would go nuts dealing with the idea that a major part of their lives(religion and religious community) has been lost, sure some good can come of it, but waking up tommorow with no religion would destroy us.
..its why science hasnt built a giant harpoon gun to kill god yet..

and an increase in abortions, since most pro life movements are Christian based

Ok then explain to me, why we arnt allowed to teach about Condoms and other forms of birthcontrol in schools right now? Well at least when I was in school.
The Religious right has kept that sort of teaching OUT of schools, mainly because of the idealology that birthcontrol is against god.

If we did teach about birth control in schools, well we wouldent have to have an anti-abortion/pro-life movement because of teen mothers or pregnant teens wanting abortions would we?

Well I can't say for sure what would happen, but I do know a lot of people would have to find a new group to pin all their problems on. No more religous right to point the finger at.

Religion is irrelevant so nothing would ultimately change.

People would find other justifications for the things they do and the issues they support or oppose.

No no I'm wrong perhaps less people in Africa would be dying from Aids, just as you suppose the number of abortions would go up.

i see religion as a pay-to-play organization...totally different from faith.

For a person of faith the disappearance of religion really should not be too traumatic

can we please return to the topic?

what changes do you envision would happen if religion were no longer around

Absolutely nothing would happen--only the WAY it happens.

The good would still be good. The selfish will still be selfish. The self-righteous will still be self-righteous. The powerful will still seek and find power. The malleable will still be manipulated.

It's like campaign finance laws. Change them all you want, but you're only changing which channels down which the river will flow. Religion is a reflection of people. Smash the mirror, the people will remain, and will see their reflection in the lakes.

People do what they want and justify it with available means. Today, for many it's religion. Without religion, they'd just grab the next available excuse. Just look at the forum "arguments" -- any phrase in a storm.

Religion is no grand edifice. It's a carefully tailored suit of clothes.
