Although I'm not sure if worship is the correct term for how the Baha'i believe they interact with their deity.

I am aware of that and possibly the use of the word should not be so defined.  I was jumping the title off the back of an existing thread to see if the discussion would be different.  I take your point.

If god is omniscient, why does it require worshipping?

Hey - don't ask me - am just the messenger....bwahahaha...
On a more serious note - like I said to Ken, 'worship' is probably not the best or most appropriate word to use in this sense - but when in rome...

But suggesting you believe you can comprehend what is not comprehendable is silly.

I believe the Baha'i Faith would not suggest that at all.

I had the 'witness' around the other day, they gave me a wonderful piece of literature, saying how can we believe that all gods are the same when we all follow different paths, actually the way it was written terrified me it was preaching hate in a less than subtle way. The notion of one true god also scares me, I believe in believing whatever makes you feel good and allowing other people to do the same, the amount of crap carried out in religions name I dunno, maybe I am optimistic in my belief that god wouldnt create in the hope that what he created will be destroyed in his name.

I have never called myself religious, I go to church occasionally, I meditate in front of my Buddha statue, I read my Tarot, and wear my crystals. I just steal the bits I like, the bits that make my life a little easier. The idea of personal faith that increases your awareness of others struggling is a frigging rocking idea.

In another thread - I stated I would not open another thread discussing another religion because I did not believe that there would be the same interest in discussion other gods or another monotheistic god.
Basically because if it isn't christian - or Islamic - no one cares.

But that is pessimistic of me.  I like to be ever the optimist!
So, that said...

In the Baha'i Faith - an monothesitic faith - God is omniscient, omnipresent and beyond human comprehension.  That the reasons humans exist is to meditate and through prayer - understand and learn to love this god.

It is a all encompassing belief where each messenger all have meaning and relivance.  That's Jesus, Muhammed,  Krishana - you name them, they are part of god and part of the greater understanding and wisdom of this being.

So, in a religion where fanaticism is banned, and monasticism is forbidden and the needs and wants of society are placed at the forefront.  Should this god - be worshiped?

Hinduism is similar. Krishna, Jesus, Ram.....the opportunities for following an individual path are wide, but yet the Upanishads start with "Filled with Brahman are all things that are; filled with Brahman are all things that are not." That pretty much covers it.

Many manifestations, but one god.

Now demi-gods is another story...

....so it really is just sort of an expansion of the Trinity concept in Christianity....

It's actually more an offshoot of Islam that anything else.  La illah illa allah - There is no god but God.  And the Qur'an states that there are many messengers, "some of which you have been told about and some of which you have not".  Some reputable scholars have interpreted certain surahs to be specifically talking about Buddha and other prophets.

Bahá'í, to my understanding, expands upon these interpretations and theories.

Thank you for this thread.  Where I personally find the Baha'i faith to closely match my own perceptions and experiences, I tend to also think that whenever faith tries to be organized it tends to fail.  But humans are social animals who like to associate with others of a like mind.  A like mind, not an identical mind.

I have been criticized for admitting that I look for spiritual relevence in a variety of sources.  The Orisha tradition of the Yoruba people is another religion that teaches that each religion holds a piece of The Truth and it is only by world unity will all the truth be revealed.

I have of course been painted with a broad brush of being mentally incompetent for expressing that I can't believe that there would be only one God who is so sadistic that It allows so many religions when there is only one True religion.  It would have to mean that God is the biggest asshole ever or that the energy refered to as god doesn't care so much how you recognize it (worship?) or even if you recognize it.  I believe God to be a form of energy that is a beneficial resource for anyone.

yes.. but than again you can't generalize much in Hinduism either. So many sects and no central authority, sometimes with completely opposing views. For Vaishnavas Vishnu is the supreme, for Shaivas Shiva and so on, for extreme advaitins all this forms are illusions. Neohinduism and modern saints /Ramakrishna, Shivananda etc) popularized a more inclusive aproach, and maybe Smartas before them, but in any case all this different ideas are there and alive. Just look at the hare krishnas. For them Shiva is a demi god. For Shaktas Krishna is a demi god and so on.

OT: Bahais are nice but for my taste a little too social and communal, they don't have a deeper, mystical trait that most religions have incorporated in them, an that's probably the most sincere part hidden behind all that ritualism, nationalism, fanaticism and what not.. Bahais seem no to be too affected by all this isms, but also not to have this deeper aspect of religion, at least I have such a feeling abut them, might be wrong of course.

Jains have an interesting concept in this regard that states the relativity of (religious) truths and the need to understand others views to be able to see this relativity that is inherent in human condition, only if one is a perfect being (according to that theory) could he understand the reality.  I agree with that, we can not have a perfect understanding of anything with our limited capabilities, but there is no need to either, every religion can help a person to grow spiritually if he is sincere.
