Status: offline 		I'm debating on whether to get rid of my glasses, and get some contacts. Who among you have done the same? Are you glad? Ambivalent? What are the pros and cons of contacts?

Status: offline 		i wear both. Contacts for work, and going out. But at home....especially when staring at the computer screen for some time, i kind of like wearing my glasses.

Status: offline 		I didn't get rid of my glasses, I kept them, and I am glad I did. I ended up not liking contact lenses. They had a very specific routien you had to follow in the beginning to get used to wearing them, and I was in highschool, so the whole routien was just inconvenient and if I cried they would come out or slip around, and one time even though I was careful one ripped in half and I couldn't get the piece left in my eye out of my eye socket for like 2 days. Another time one of them fell out on the school bathroom floor, and it was just the one day I didn't bring my glasses so I had to call home and have so meone bring me my glasses.


Plus you always have to remember your solution, and if you don't then you have to wear your contacts till you can get some more solution or let them dry out and ruin. Also you're gonna have the expense of replacing the lenses and new solution all the time when they expire, instead of the one time cost of your glasses.Now you eventually do have to pay for new glasses, but that's more in frequent than the contact solution and contact lenses if you treat your glasses right.

toppingfrmbottom, that whole stuck in the eye for two days, ugh lol, that's the kinda thing that I hate thinking about. I don't like the idea of touching my eye with anything, either.

Status: offline 		I've had contacts for around 30 yrs.  I've done soft dailies, soft monthlies, and gas permeables.   If you can be assured of taking them out each night/day.. I suggest the gas permiables (or however the hell ya spell that damned word).  Daily maintenance is a bit more intense, but I found them to have the best vision.
Daily wear soft, I could get away with sleeping in.
Weekly I have stretched out for long past when the Opt. says its safe.

i have both contact lenses and glasses, and i love having both. i wear contacts most of the time (or i'm supposed to, anyways, lol) and use my glasses for when i'm feeling lazy.

The only thing that comes to mind regarding having contacts for the first time is how your eyes react to having them in, and whatnot.

The only cons i can think of is cleaning them because they can get "fuzzy" with calcium (or whatever it is) build-up during the day (or when you haven't worn them for a few days, too).

Hope all goes well for you if/when you decide to get yours!


Oh, and mine are gas perms, too. And i agree with topping that if you don't put them in the right way, they sometimes slip and can get stuck in the back/side of your eye, which is annoying. Ask your optometrist or they can give you a "mini-plunger" type tool to help you get them out when/if that happens, lol. Mine gave me one with mine, heh.

Status: offline 		I never really minded touching my eye so much, and what little I did mind I got used to, but your eyes are so delicate, if you're not careful contact lenses can probably give you an eye infection if you're not careful. I also didn't like having to stop and wash my hands everytime I wanted to handle my lenses,  which sounds really awful, like oh eww gross you have a problem washing your hands? but it's not that it was just  the hassle you know.

Ooh, yes, this or they can stratch your eyes, too.

Status: offline 		Level.. my eye guy said that if you're going to wear contacts the best thing you can do is have a pair of glasses too (make sure the prescription is up to date).  Sometimes, your eyes NEED a break from contacts,. especially if you spend a lot of time in the contacts....

Status: offline 		i had contacts back in the days when the were "hard".  i also had bifocal contacts a few years ago.
 
The biggest problem with contacts that i had when living in Oklahoma was the wind and dust in the air.  The folks with the newer types of contacts can tell you if wind bothers them.

Status: offline 		i definately like them.Particularly living in Florida, where sunglasses are a daily requirement. i also prefer contacts when doing things like wearing headphones, sex, kissing, riding on roller coasters, wet t-shirt contests, cooking steamy things, opening diswashers immediately after a load....lots of stuff.

i have contacts that are disposed of monthly, so i always have extra on hand in case of emergency. When travelling, i bring an extra pair, just in case. There are travel sized 3-in-1 solutions, and it's much more convenient than it used to be to clean them.

Status: offline 		I hate that I tend to lose one sides scrip more frequently that the other sides (as in, I'm 2 shy of my right side lenses than I am of the left side......)

I wish like hell my eyes would match up.

Status: offline 		I wore contacts for many years before taking the plunge and having Lasik surgery.  Glasses always seemed inconvenient to me.  They fogged up, got wet when it rained, I had a limited field of vision, and they were expensive.  Taking care of contact lenses becomes second nature once you get used to it.  The newer all-in-one solutions are convenient and inexpensive.  And I enjoyed the freedom of having a complete field of vision not limited by the edges of my eyeglass frames.  But the Lasik surgery just thrilled me.  To be able to wake up in the middle of the night and see the alarm clock is amazing when you've never been able to do it before.  I don't worry about having to find my glasses or contacts if the house should catch fire - my vision was 20/400 before the surgery and I was practically helpless without vision correction.  If surgery is not an option for you, I think contacts are the way to go.

Status: offline 		Level, check with the other folks here.  It might have been a problem assiciated with "hard" lenses only.  And yes the dust would get in my eyes and sratch the lens and irritate my eye.

Yep. mine's about an inch in length, and kind of a rubber-y material, and it's blue. my opt. gave me this handy dandy little thing with my first pair of lenses; i don't know if they hand them out now, though. If a lense gets "stuck" in the side of my eye for some reason (i rub my eye the wrong way or flinch when putting them in), i just put the suction end on the lense (after moving my eyelid out of the way, too... oh, and having a mirror helps, too) and pull it off, clean the lense, and put it back in again.

i'm on my second, third pair, i think? And i've been wearing contacts for heck, maybe since high school, i think? i've had glasses for longer, though.

Oh, and i agree with what Greedy said, too, to make sure your presription is up to date and all.

Although I havent doen Lasik, my stepdad did.

HE said it was kinda annoying for a small bit.. but also had it done about 10 yrs ago.

Status: offline 		I don't wear either one but my daughter wears both.

Even with contacts you have to give your eyes a rest from them and wear glasses from time to time.

We were just at the optometrist last week who had to remind my daughter of this fact or else she could end up with some kind of eye problem that he mentioned but for the life of me I can't remember what he called it.

Her contacts costs me $55 for a 3 month supply of the soft type that you can wear for a month.

Her new glasses that she had to get because her prescription slightly changed and well..she's a fashionista and begged for new ones..cost me $250.

I'm thankful for vision insurance!
