I got hard-hard contacts when I was 11, then gas perms in my early or mid-20's.  I'm told my eyes produce a lot of gunk, which is the medical term for protein deposits, and I could never get the gas perms all clean and sparkly, no matter what I did to them, and yes, I tried it all.  About 10 years ago, I started asking the eye docs if I could have soft disposable ones, but they all acted like it was a big mysterious taboo, that I'd never have anything near 20/20 vision, and to not even think about it, so I continued on with crappy foggy vision all the time.

Last summer, I found a doc who said "Sure!" (I almost fell off the chair).  I put in the trial pair and it was like the angels sang and the world became high def!  I have great vision, CLEAR vision, and can even wear weaker reading glasses than I was with the GP's.  If you drop one, pffffffff....no more crawling around the floor with a flashlight, just open up another one!   When they get dirty, throw them away, nice new clean ones!  I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE them!  They're supposed to be good for two weeks, but I can usually get three out of them before changing.

I don't know what all the other eye docs' problem was with switching to soft contacts, but you all know who you are and you all SUCK!

I wear the type of soft contact lenses that you wear for only one day and throw away each night. They come 90 to a box and since both my eyes have always been the same since I have been wearing them it is easy to buy them and not have to remember which one is for the right eye and which is for the left eye. If you get low and forgot to order more you can wear them for a couple days I found out if you rinse them in that special type of no-rub saline solution. You never have to buy solution or cleaners or any of that stuff so they might seem more expensive at first but that solution is expensive so I don't think the cost is more or that much more.

I first tried contacts about 15 yrs ago (damn, that long???) and I was lazy about cleaning them.......popping them out of my eyes straight into the lens case. I ended up almost losing my right eye as a result. Not just the vision, the whole damn eye was going to be scooped out :( Thankfully it was caught in time and I just had aggressive treatment for several months and the vision is no worse.
I started w/contacts again about 2 years ago when I became a driver for the FD. The sun visors are TOO BIG to keep adjusting. (Have to duck each time) so I got disposable contacts so I could wear sunglasses. I only wear them on weekends when I'm out during the day or when I go out in the evenings.
I hate 'em and will be getting the glasses that turn dark in the sun on my next visit.

This type of lens won't turn dark behind the windshield of a vehicle.  They react to UV rays & all windshields have UV protection now, therefore, no UV rays will reach the lenses.  I would recommend glasses that have the magnetic shades.
