Maybe Compaq got better then because when I worked in dispatch at a local power and gas company in California, main dispatch all had Compaqs that were continually going down. The running joke got to be that they should just put the guy on salary - it would be cheaper. And I had a couple of friends that had Compaqs that seemed to run a lot of problems. Companies change over time, some improve, some get worse. Though I haven't heard anything but good about the E500 line. Plus, maybe there's a difference with you being in the UK, I know some companies change things between there and here.

It's good to know there are good ones out there.

ShaharThorne:

I get this question a lot: Which computer should I buy? The only 2 brands I recommend are HP & Dell. And not the crap sold in the big box store, either. Get yourself the business version, direct from the manufacturer, the ones that come with a 3yr warranty. Dealing direct allows you to "downgrade" to XP Pro but also ask about the upgrade path to Win 7. If your budget allows, be sure to get a 64-bit CPU and 4 or more GB RAM. Win 7 ROCKS, despite what a few people here to say. I've been running the Beta and the RC for months in a virtual environment and it works.

I've been a professional computer geek for over 25 years and have yet to be dissappointed by either Dell or HP.

That is what I am thinking, Dave. I am used to XP and used to use XP Pro when I was working for the state. I know it will run extra for a custom built machine but I have done it before. This time, I will make sure the CD ROMs are working, not like the ones on this Compaq *spits at the compaq*

I am hoping the Win7 comes installed since I want to play with it...[:D]

Windows 7 will contain not just one recycling bin but five bins each colour coded for all the various types of file they can take. We all know for example that gifs are old file types and harder to recycle than the newer jpgs which were created with sustainability in mind.

Other than that Windows 7 will be exactly like Windows Vista (oh and your media player will go even slower due to another extra layer of security for the artists benefit not yours.)

Your identity will be stored under the Microsoft number system which nobody without a PhD can fathom.

lol..perhaps you should try to update your pc once in the 20 years   [:D]

with a quad core and 8 gig and 2 graphic cards..it runs pretty smooth :P

The Compaq E500 I have was bought in the middle east and so, it has two sets of restore disks, one set in English, and the other in Arabic. It is just a sore pity that the machine is such low spec, otherwise, I would have stayed with it, but now, it is just a backup, and there for when I want the nostalga of win 98.

So, I have been informed Microshaft is offering a free download of the new  OS free to Vistaster users, does anyone know anything about this ?

The new OS is vaunted to be everything Vistaster is not, being lighter and faster and using less memory, what Vistaster should have been, but was not, is this offer a means of apology to all those that once believed in Microshaft, are they trying to draw their custom back, or is this new OS  all it's cracked up to be ?

I discovered why my machine on Vistaster home basic is eratic, it is the chipset which is at fault, it being only capable of running Vistaster, but not at it's best. An early generation Vista designed machine, the latest I understand to be fairly trouble free, but then they have a more capable chipset.

Well I put it on mine to try. And so far it's working pretty well. Installation was quick and hands-off. If it proves to be as stable as it should I will likely switch. Vista would not run my AMD dual core 64 bit as a 64 bit chip. But this will. And it started up ready to run. Not bad so far.
