1. Move your head from side to side while staring intently at Him; if there is a shimmer, or if you can see occasional flashes of the background through Him, He is not a real Dom, but in fact a hologram.

2. Ask Him a series of questions- if He repeats an answer, there is either a glitch in the Matrix, or He is not real.

Do not be fooled!

I hate the word'real' when refering to a dom or sub...Each and every one of us are different in our own way, some like me very strict some just in it for the sex...So how we view each other is different from every persons point of view....bounty

Isn't there a blood test?

Actually yes there is. Someone posted it on youtube.

And to the OP. There just isn't any hard and fast rules.
It would great if everything was that simple.

From my point of view -
About the best place anyone can start (who is looking for a relationship) is from a dating perspective not the kink angle.
What you want/need now kink wise will change develop and grow as time progresses.
Find someone you like and respect first develop your kink side of things together.
If you "meet' someone online try and keep time short before meeting up to check compatibility.
Life is too short to waste getting emotionally tied up with someone you might not have chemistry with offline.

They first have to take their twue dom permit test.  It's a written exam based on the book : "Dominance for Dumbinants"-By Lordmastersircrankypants.
They then have to attend the secret European Houses for 6 months.  They take the skills test.  They pass if they can swing a single tail (Florentine style) without putting an eye out (their own,  as"submittive" eyeballs are expendable, they don't need eyes, anyway.  A twue submittive only sees what she is told to see.)  Lastly, they have to perfect the domly scowl/sneer.  Then they get their "dominate license".  Just ask to see it.

Wait...I never took the skills test!!!  Does that make me a para-dom(shift)?

How does one recognize a real dom?

I was going to say something like, "weal" and "twue" are meaningless, but I like all the other posts better.  lmao

Poke Dom with stick, if it falls over, it's a 2-d cardboard cut out used to trap you, watch out for the trap!

I used to use bait and shoot dating, a cut-out of Russel Crow holding chocolate while I lay in wait with a tranquilizer dart.

Truthfully, I so have hated the "True Dom" or "Real Dom" labeling. What is true and real to you may b the biggest fake to another. More pertinent question might be how do I determine if this is the right Dom for me? While nobody can answer that but you, the peanut gallery can provide advice on avoiding pitfalls and potentially unsafe behavior. Try not to be too judgmental at first, I come across as relaxed and funny but am quite the sadist. So if your Dom candidate is not being an the ogre you expected him to, you may be surprised what lies under that sheep-skin disguise.

(Question aside, why is dom so often spelled with a small d ?)

because it's pretentious unless it happens to be the given name (or diminutive of said given name) of the dominant?

I used to automatically cap the term, now I consciously dont, it seems pretty pointless, mostly because its simply a case of hitting the shift key yet an amount of superiority is attached. Being a submissive makes me no less worthy of a cap, my name is 'Lilly' with a capital L (would sound so much better with my real name)

Whether one is a real dom for you,or not, is determined by how consistently he responds mentally and physically to your submission.

That's right--a real dom never engages in reflection.

Wait...that doesn't sound right.....

Here in Iowa and a few bordering states, there is a dom licensing board.  One must pay the exorbitant fee of .02 cents to take the written and oral test.  A passing grade will earn them a Real Dom license which is renewable, (again for a fee), every 6 years or whenever they begin a new relationship.  The license comes with a notarized Real Dom certificate which must be displayed in a prominent location within their home; above the T.V., or in the garage are some suggestions.  The TRUE Real Dom will have the certificate matted and framed and will add the letters R.D. after their signature.
