I am not big on fancy assignments, but I do give subtle ones at first. I want to see most of all if I will be obeyed. (pesky detail, that!) I also want to see if that person will fit into my life, and my family, vanilla and otherwise. If the person is not interested in impressing me during the getting to know you period, well... I want to clarify that I consider "assignments" to be different from the everyday stuff like "get the oil changed in my car".

LH, it astonishes me how often your approach and mine are either the same or very similar. This is exactly how I approach it, and a goodly number of subs have been dumped before playtime because I saw no evidence of any obedience to anything other than their kink and their cock. Of course, the best thing is having someone anticipate your needs, before you even realise you have them. Sheer bliss!

Well, I'm a sub, but hope you don't mind me putting my 2 cents in. The only times JR has given me assignments have been to help me past something I found difficult, or to help me organise my thoughts and benefit our relationship. For instance, the first time we met it was a vanilla meeting, during which we arranged to meet for play a week later. It was to be my first bdsm experience, and I had expressed on a few occasions how nervous I felt about getting naked in front of him. So during that week he got me to send him a different nude photo of myself each day. It helped enormously because when it came to stripping in front of him I knew he had already seen all there was to see, and it obviously hadn't put him off me! I actually have an assignment at the moment... our relationship started off mainly as SM but has developed to include more of a D/s element with me feeling a strong desire to please him. He has had several subs before, but these sub feelings are something new to me, and after discussing them he's given me a couple of books to read, about different paths through vanilla to SM to D/s. Once they're read he wants me to write an essay/report on them, comparing them with each other and considering which points in them do or don't apply to me, and where I feel I am now in that journey. Then we'll discuss the issues raised. I find that only a few chapters into the first book they're very thought provoking, and I think I'll get a lot of benefit from the exercise as I always find putting my thoughts down in writing helps me to see them more clearly, and to explain them better when I come to share them with JR.

I'ven ever had someone give me an assignment before. Personally though, I think I might enjoy it - I liked writing when I was younger. Granted, that may defeat the purpose (ie: assignments as a punishment), but still.
