pahunkboy -> RE: Tents, Camping (8/21/2009 2:11:57 PM)

set the tent up beforehand.   they are smaller then they say.  I bought one cheap- what I did not see is that it was a kids tent!!   So I ran into a tent at  a thrift store- with no stakes- which I bought I think at Wallmart.

The location you camp makes a big difference.  Even in the same "town"- one camp can be informal- another almost like a subdivision.

I was last camping up in the state forest. it was nice.   tho primitive- they had an area that was a tent pad- place to put tents.

Going with a group is good as someone forgets something- and someone else has an extra one... it is easy to get bogged down with the junk and by the time you are set up- time to come home.

I was wanting to go camping this year- the church had a camp-but I figured too many screaming kids.

I set the tent up last year on the yard- just to feel festive- alot of people do- you know make the back yard into a  'camp"

If you're camping on the beach the sand may not give you purchase for your tent stakes. Do a google search for "sand anchors" and you should find some easy and cheap ways to solve the problem.

Sand anchors, I have done it the tight fisted way, bury plastic carrier bags full of sand in the sand, then attach the tent pegging points to the carrier bag handles, also works in snow.

anybody else hearing the theme music from "Jaws"?

edited to add...

I haven't seen anyone mention that if you have a light source on in your tent after dark, EVERYTHING you're doing is visible to outsiders.

I haven't camped since, well, um, since I was about 10 years of age. I'm going beach camping and since I haven't the slightest idea about tents and such, any advice would be appreciated.

I was looking at those pop up tents anyone ever try one of those? Would these,

http://www.amazon.com/b/ref=amb_link_6393752_5?ie=UTF8&node=267174011&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=auto-sparkle&pf_rd_r=09T7XNC32K2Q79E6Q6FB&pf_rd_t=301&pf_rd_p=421464001&pf_rd_i=pop%20up%20camping%20tent

stand up for a weekend camping trip? I'm thinking probably not, but I'm hopeful as these are probably as much as I will be able to manage to put together.

What am I getting myself into. I can't wait for this adventure to begin. I'm sure its going to be quite a comedy of errors once I get on site. [:D]

I've got a quechua pop up tent that I bought last year, spent half the summer in it working at festivals (and rather stupidly in the middle of all that I went on a litte camping holiday) they are just as good as old-style tents of the same price, but well; instant.

they do have two draw backs, they are stored in the bag as a big disc, that isnt really convenient to carry whilst hiking (its possible, I took it on a 10 mile hike in snowdonia carrying a rucksack on my back and that in my hand, but its hard to stop it dragging on the ground) and putting them away, whilst very quick, does take a few goes to get the knack of.

they are also a bit more resiliant to vandalism than other tents, for reasons I can't begin to fathom, whilst at festival in the lakes last year some arsehole threw a wheelrim at it while I was working a nightshift, the tent next to mine had a pole snapped, presumably by the same wheelrim, mine had simply bent down under the weight of it.

There is no such thing as weather to cold to camp in......

(says the woman who has a propane driven catalytic heater for insid her tent for winter camping, and has been known to camp in 2 feet of snow... )

Having camped in similar weather without the propane heater, I have to say .... NEVER AGAIN!!!! My pile of blankets was over a foot thick and I slept with my head under the covers. On the bright side, I was the winner of the bet that got me there. Everyone else ran for home.

ack! holly that poison ivy comment even made me cringe lol

speaking of which back around 1995 I went camping with my uncle and his wife...he ended up using getting drunk, forgetting the TP at around 3am and grabbed a handful of leaves to use....you guessed it...poison ivy. he didn't have a very good camping trip...the day after that he managed to grab hold of a bunch of  catfish, got stuck with one of their spines and threw them into the *inflatable* boat. could have sunk the boat.

needless to say I don't go camping with him anymore [:D]

You really should have film of that trip. That's just too funny.

To those mentioning swimming after dark, not this Lady, I might wave my slippered feet across the water, in the evenings when I'm not able to see around me. Just last month a young lady was taking a swim, off her deck, and was bitten pretty bad. I don't becoming part of the statics of those becoming shark bait in the middle of the night.

I've seen demos of those insta tents, but most seem too small. I do think they're pretty neat.

numuncular -> RE: Tents, Camping (8/21/2009 8:14:36 PM)

it depends how big you need, you can get 4 man size ones, my 3 man has easily fit two people and all our junk.

Everything is absolutely visible, and tent walls ARE NOT soundproof.  (Don't ask... long story, rather embarassing, 25 years ago)

Whatinhell makes you think I don't have a foot thick layer of 8 or 10 blankets as well as that catalytic heater during the winter?????

Well, if you're looking to impress your experienced beach camping friends, then bring a guitar and or a small drum for Coom By Ya.

Well, I havn't seen the obvious solution to this delimma. My idea of camping is the Ritz Carlton. Really roughing it is no room service.

See that is why you swim in lakes durring the night and not the ocean or gulf.

However we found out that our fave skinny dipping hole was a gator breeding meetup. I have never run so fast in all of my life!

I live on the gulf and a neighbor got bitten on the bippy by a shark a couple of weeks ago swimming off of his dock.

So I am staying out of the water now thanks.
