This is a game changer, though we might regret cancelling the order for enough 5th generation air-to-air fighters to make sure they don't get shot down.

EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif., Aug. 20, 2009 -- The Boeing Company [NYSE: BA], industry teammates and the U.S. Missile Defense Agency on Aug. 18 successfully fired the high-energy laser aboard the Airborne Laser (ABL) aircraft in flight for the first time, moving closer toward ABL's upcoming missile shoot-down demonstration.

Iran doesn't seem to be making nukes, and north korea already has...so...

servantforuse -> RE: If we can stall Iran and North Korea just a little longer (8/22/2009 9:48:05 AM)

The sooner we get this to work, the better. Ronald Reagon wanted a missile defense system more than 20 years ago.

TheHeretic -> RE: If we can stall Iran and North Korea just a little longer (8/22/2009 9:49:04 AM)

So, Woody, I'm guessing you've completely missed North Korea's efforts at launching ballistic missiles?

DCWoody -> RE: If we can stall Iran and North Korea just a little longer (8/22/2009 9:54:03 AM)

No.....the point that they've already done it was kinda my whole post :)

Also I think if either of those two states were going to attack the usa with nukes....which doesn't seem likely to me, they'd be smuggling them in terrorist style...not sending them flying, even without the lasers (which're doubtless being overhyped), western missile technology is far above anything north korea could do.

mstrj69 -> RE: If we can stall Iran and North Korea just a little longer (8/22/2009 10:07:08 AM)

Who cares about technology. They do not have the quantity. We have subs sitting close enough to them to blow both countries off the map the second they tried to send one our way.

TheHeretic -> RE: If we can stall Iran and North Korea just a little longer (8/22/2009 10:07:56 AM)

Pretty limited worldview, Woody.  N. Korea might have the peanut butter and chocolate, but they don't have the peanut butter cup yet.

The threat is not so much against the US mainland as at our regional partners.  We are still the only superpower, and have deep interests in maintaining some stability.  This is an excellent way to do that.

DCWoody -> RE: If we can stall Iran and North Korea just a little longer (8/22/2009 10:30:19 AM)

I see your point, even if I have no idea what a peanut butter cup is :)

Still reckon this is just another bit of probably never gonna be used military technology getting overhyped though.

popeye1250 -> RE: If we can stall Iran and North Korea just a little longer (8/22/2009 10:46:58 AM)

Let China handle N. Korea.
Just put one nuclear sub somewhere in the Pacific on standby.

Oh I think Airborne laser platforms will have plenty of military uses in the future. Think about all the potential uses. Combine an array of high powered mobile lasers with AWAC perception of the sky, and GPS corrected Drone ground data, .5 second to aim and fire, you could devastate a battlefield in moments, before anyone realised the shooting had started.... Though actually shooting down a lone nuke on an ICBM from NK is a highly unlikey scenario.

servantforuse -> RE: If we can stall Iran and North Korea just a little longer (8/22/2009 10:54:35 AM)

I think we should point it at the DNC national headquarters.

Just the start of another arms race. People will be buying mirror tiles to cover their roofs.

The final stage of any laser is a mirror right it just becomes a questions of how much heat can be reflected perhaps those roof tiles need to be super cooled?[8|]

Just imagine if someone invented a reflective dish that could reflect that laser back at the plane/satellite carrying the super weapon? How much would that take in reality, it’s a lot simpler than creating a powerful laser light enough to fit on a plane.

DC, peanut butter wrapped in chocolate, Ill send you some:) they are good no strike that, they are yummy

rightwinghippie -> RE: If we can stall Iran and North Korea just a little longer (8/22/2009 12:42:50 PM)

There certainly would be an arms race out of it. 100Kilowatt beams flashing several times a second...Can you defend that with a mirror? I don't know. I am not an expert on this, I thought they could make lasers with energy fields to focus the beams, is that not correct?

It would seem that going into a laser defense mode would involve hunkering down and going blind. Mirrors, I would imagine lots of small crystals (like volcano ash type stuff) going into the air to attempt to deflect and refract the energy beam. I guess theoretically you could harden a target with supecooled reflective tiles. Could a soldier walk with the gear on? Could a tank move? Could a plane fly?

Well they'd need some kind of targeting mirror to direct the beam and this would probably be super cooled. Thus my logic is after going though the atmosphere a mirror could deflect the beam if cooled slightly.

Ialdabaoth -> RE: If we can stall Iran and North Korea just a little longer (8/22/2009 1:20:58 PM)

Sure, if you can keep the mirror clean enough. Get enough dirt on it, though, and it'll stop reflecting.

Which means the best bet is for the laser gunship's escorts to fire off some smoke/chaff bombs, litter the area with laser-absorbing material, and then wait for the dust to settle before zapping any targets of opportunity with the big laser.

rightwinghippie -> RE: If we can stall Iran and North Korea just a little longer (8/22/2009 2:03:46 PM)

I am out of my leauge here so can't say with certainty. I am sure there is some sort of defense against lasers. Its less than 100% it would seem.

But it seems common sense to me that to have a full laser defense going, you would have to be blind and on lockdown. Untill we get Star Trek type shields--the whole ball game changes at that point. If you could see outside while under attack, your not at 100% reflective, right? Your communication antennas are being melted and would have to be replaced after the battle. So the laser attack can start with no warning or time to get into defense mode. Seems like a usefull weopon platform to investigate.

Theoretically a flying laser could pop the tire on a drug kingpins Jeep, at the right time for an ambush, with no one having any idea. Or make a plane crash. Or have one guy in a crowds head catch on fire, hurting no one else.

The other practical issue with lasers is that they're inefficient as hell.  Last time I checked (maybe 20 years ago), they were 0.1% efficient.  In other words, it would take 100 megawatts to generate 100 kilowatts of power.  Putting that kind of power generation on an airplane (which is all about lightness and speed) is crazy.

TheHeretic -> RE: If we can stall Iran and North Korea just a little longer (8/22/2009 2:25:51 PM)

Think in terms of a 747, Steve.

It flies, and they have been doing crazy stuff at Edwards for a long time.

More chance of you being struck by lightning than a North Korean missile Rich.
