Attack on Obama riles Glenn Beck's advertisers

NEW YORK – Glenn Beck returns to Fox News Channel on Monday after a vacation with fewer companies willing to advertise on his show than when he left, part of the fallout from calling President Barack Obama a racist.

A total of 33 Fox advertisers, including Wal-Mart Stores Inc., CVS Caremark, Clorox and Sprint, directed that their commercials not air on Beck's show, according to the companies and ColorofChange.org, a group that promotes political action among blacks and launched a campaign to get advertisers to abandon him. That's more than a dozen more than were identified a week ago.

While it's unclear what effect, if any, this will ultimately have on Fox and Beck, it is already making advertisers skittish about hawking their wares within the most opinionated cable TV shows.

Can't wait to see how long it takes before somebody tries to spin this as a liberal attack on free speech.

Beck's nothing but a lying sack of shit. It's nice to see some of his inflammatory chickens coming home to roost. I think I'll send e-mails to some of those companies and thank them for putting their money where their morals are.

Chickens coming home to roost... good one.

No one claimed it was an attack on free speech, why so defensive Panda.

To use a more extreme example... Back when I lived in Utah,a neo-Nazi radio station started up in southern Idaho.  Concerned people listened, noted who advertised on that station, and contacted those businesses asking them to quit advertising there.  Those businesses invariably pulled the advertising readily.  The radio station continued to give the ads airplay even unpaid, to give the illusion that they still had advertisers, but died an unlamented death shortly.

I'm not seeing it.  The advertisers are completely free to pull their sponsorship, and/or request their ads not run during certain programming.  They have freedom of speech as well.  I think I see the source of your confusion though.  If this was happening to a far left douchebag, say that bigot Bill Maher, then it would be howled about as censorship.  Different set of rules for them, dont'cha know.

DomKen -> RE: Attack on Obama riles Glenn Beck's advertisers (8/25/2009 12:13:11 AM)

How soon they forget. It did happen to Bill Maher. Nobody had any problem with sponsors pulling their ads. Of course it didn't stop with advertisers. Ari Fleischer, speaking officially for GWB, attacked Maher's right to even say what he said. I can only imagine the right wing flame out that would occur if Gibbs was to publicly condemn Beck.

TheHeretic -> RE: Attack on Obama riles Glenn Beck's advertisers (8/25/2009 12:22:14 AM)

Oh I didn't forget, Ken.  I remember all too well, and noticed every time Bill Maher (the bigot) tried to claim a little victimhood off it.  How many times did we hear cries of "censorship" about the Dixie Chicks?

I'm not seeing censorship here, but I won't be surprised if someone tries to play the card.  Don't look for me to be endorsing it, if it happens.

It appears as though the Obama White House has an enemies list, similar to the Nixon White House - and that this is an attempted "Hit". First Obama went after Rush Limbaugh directly, and now this.

Chilling!

Glenn Beck goes after Color of Change co-founder Van Jones

Glenn Beck used his popular Fox News show this afternoon to attack the background of Van Jones, a White House environmental advisor who co-founded an African American political advocacy group that organized an advertising boycott of his program.

During his 2 p.m. PDT show, Beck did not address the boycott spearheaded by Color of Change to protest the talk show host’s remark last month that he believes President Obama is “a racist.”

Instead, he spent a large share of his program suggesting that Jones, who co-founded Color of Change in 2005, is a radical. Jones now serves as a special advisor for Green Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation at the White House Council on Environmental Quality.

During a six-minute biographical profile, set to ominous music, Beck said Jones was twice arrested for political protests and has described himself as a "rowdy black nationalist." The talk show host cast the piece as part of a broader examination of Obama's "czars," special advisers to the president who "don't answer to anybody."

"Why is it that such a committed revolutionary has made it so high into the Obama administration as one of his chief advisers?" Beck asked.

I don't even know what the term "black nationalist" means.

Ever heard of "Google"?

it means boogeyman in Becks eyes Steven

Obama has some very questionable friends (Jeremiah Wright, for instance), and he did recently have charges dropped against the Black Panthers who were blocking polls in Philly. Obama has also gone after Rush Limbaugh... there is something of a pattern here, so I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss the charges that Beck is trying to raise.

He has a very interesting point, and he is the one in the gun sights. You can't exactly call it paranoia if they really are coming after you.

He didn't "go after" Rush, sanity. He said that it might not be the smartest idea to let a Rush be the leader of the republican party. Hardly a pogram. But you keep telling it like you want it to be. How about you give us a nice long talk about how the democrats are trying to push through the fairness doctrine. I know the right wing am talk show hosts are having a field day with that nonsense and we all know you listen.

Lucylastic -> RE: Attack on Obama riles Glenn Beck's advertisers (8/25/2009 6:39:04 AM)

yeah yeah, black panthers, black nationalists, black nazi's, racist reverends, white terrorists he pals around with, the guy is a regular nightmare...has nothing to do with the fact that Becks an insult and a twat.
just my WHITE point of view

mnottertail -> RE: Attack on Obama riles Glenn Beck's advertisers (8/25/2009 6:44:41 AM)

As a general observation, Wal-Mart, CVS, Clorox, et al. would probably pull advertising from Obama were that his engine.....it ain't. (They're pretty conservative, as a whole).

Beck has raised rhetoric, not charges, accusations maybe....

Fox has a conservative viewpoint (one of the many liberal media..LOL) and seems nobody is buying what Becks selling.........so................

White Liberal point of view. Obama is making Dick Nixon look like sunshine and pink roses, but there are those who refuse to see.

And you got all of that from this link?

What's chilling is you seem to find things that are just not there.

If the shoe were on the other foot the group behind this would be 'mobs of Nazi book burners trying to ban free speech' or some such, but since they're friends of Obama anything they do is literally to be worshiped.

The ludicrous double standard is if nothing else highly entertaining....

So because Im a white liberal, omg Im not american either, my point of view on beck is irrelevent? his racism and continued ignorance and arrogance is the ongoing issue and YES I would feel the same if he was a liberal(beck I mean).

I dont have a point of reference for Nixon, is he as bad as Reagan was?
