RML, so since Holder is limiting his investigation to only Bush era events, how do you feel about it?

I'm going to jump in here and speak of how I feel about it. I feel it's bullshit. In the wake of 9/11, America reacted like a bunch of frightened sheep. "Save us!" we cried. "Keep the big, bad terrorists away from us!" we begged. "Do you want to eviscerate the constitution? Fine! You want to attack a country that had absolutely nothing to do with the attack upon us? Great! You want to put anyone reported by anyone as being a possible terrorist into prison with no rights, no due process and no guarantee that they will ever be released even if they're innocent? Ok...You want to shut down the statue of liberty herself? We're on board."

We can say what we like about Bush, but he never made a secret of what he was doing. He told us he wanted to go to war with Iraq and he did. He said he was going to vastly expand the ability of the intelligence service to spy on Americans and he did. He said he was going to torture those prisoners he thought might tell us useful things and he did.

And what did we, all of us, do about it? Not one hell of a lot. Oh some of us groused. There were even a few demonstrations. But compared to the public outcry when the government did something truly outrageous like trying to provide affordable health care to all Americans, there was a deafening silence.

So I think that the idea of prosecuting the CIA operatives, the low or mid level grunts (like we did in Aub Grahbi), and yes, even Bush or Cheny is ridiculous. If we were going to prosecute this case fairly, we would all be found guilty for letting it happen. This isn't an attempt at justice. It's a way for all of us to expiate our shame for a truly shameful thing we let happen.

We can't hide what we were all part of. We can only stop it and make damned sure it never happens again.
