One does not simply absorb pain.

There must be a reason why you are put under such duress. Are you misbehaving? <_<

Aside from alcohol and drugs: Meditate often. Daily. You have the power of the internet, google that sucker.
It is a question of mind over matter. Can you mind your matter good sir?

if you looked at the context of her comments you'd realize what she said was true. you merely have to find the methods that will work for you. there isn't a one size fits all way of doing it. the bottom line is really endurance and your willingness to do it for him. perhaps you should take yourself out of the equation and see what happens.

You build up a tolerance mentaly, physicaly, and emotionaly. It's mind over matter and knowing that you can endure longer next time. Meditate, focus, and think happy thoughts.

I think that if you are properly restrained, it is the will of the Domme that will get you to "adsorb" more pain.

Have painful issues as a child then develop chronic pain issues: works fabulously.
Ummm, less extreme: work upto it.  And, skull space is fantastic.  Next time you notice something is hurting (Example: when the weather is bad, one of my knees sometimes hurts)...focus your attention on that body part, breathe as you're focusing on it and make your focus that of diminishing the discomfort.  It's worked for me for years when I do it related to various things.  It is attention-intensive but I have also built up a peripherally greater tolerance that way (And form tthe things I said in the first sentence).

That's a question I don't think I've ever heard before. What made you ask it?

Well technically if you are subjected to extended periods of pain at a time, it will eventually stop affecting you. Though we're talking serious pain here. Its the reason why physical forms of torture don't work effectively.

Again this is spot on the bullseye and echoes what I have found from personal experience in real life. I also find no two people find the identical technique works equally for them, it is a personal thing but when helping chronic pain sufferers of which I am one, I do teach breathing through pain and trying to find the centre of your self which can be a wonderful place to shelter from pain and such. This is well known to martial artists as it is to Buddhists too.

If you are asking about just "pain" then all the above apply.  It may be helpful for you to think of the different kinds of pain.  Now if someone is subjecting you to pain just to hurt you then run for the door.  If it is sexually based pain you can always try to focus on your partner.  His/her eyes, their breathing, a touch from their body rubbing against you, how excited they may be from giving you pain, their words of encouragement, the anticipation of wonderful love making or pure raw f******.  Try not to focus on each strike.  Focus on your breathing - breath thru the pain.  Focus on pleasing him/her, how proud they will be if you can take just a little more.  It is amazing how much strength love can actually give you.  If your pain is because you are being punished...well, take a deep breath and pray you don't make the same mistake twice!  On the flip side to that, a good Master/Mistress would probably love it if you posed the question to them.  "Master, will you please work with me so that I may take more pain for you?"  Even if you cannot take more pain the next time, they will see that your heart and mind are already in the right place.  Best of luck!

People surly do adsorb pain.  Physical and mental if not more often out of the context of BDSM I'd say equally.  As Pyroguy mentioned monks think meditation. - it is done in MMA as well.

I am not a big wiki fan but: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pain_tolerance

I swear all the fucking time, I am still a big pussy when it comes to pain for the most part.  I tolerate it well, but I get no buzz, joy or rush.  Fuck, I hate needles.  Here is an interesting article on "swearing"
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/07/090713085453.htm

Here is something else.  I have not read it but ran across it in a general search.  Something about fantasy dulling pain?  Could be a form of distraction?  I bet it also activates different areas in our brain - dunno:
http://www.scienceagogo.com/news/19991118193235data_trunc_sys.shtml

I personally believe aroma therapy is quackery.  But, when I was getting accupuncture done to help me quit smoking(which did not work) the lady kept telling me about it.  So, there might be some value there.

Think about pain threshold too as another word to Google.  Someone also mentioned Chronic pain.  Many people suffer pain on a regular basis and tolerate it different ways.

We got pain tolerance, pain thershold, distraction, meditation and monks(shaolin).

If your mind is not yours the pain should matter.  I guess if you are not a slave that looses some value.  I enjoy the as much as the sex - almost.  I think the amount of strength, commitment and trust that type of gift offers or 'expresses' to be...  to be.. beyond words.  I do not that type of strength but I can share it with the sub.

Different kinds of pain offer different amounts of endorphin release.  This is where an addiction to pain/subspace can come in.  Looking back at less modern times it is a very ritualistic experience.  It is a very personal thing.  I am not sure but it reminds us who we are, motivates us, our role or 'position'.  I read on a button once, "Fear of pain is fear of leaving my body".  I wanted to marry that girl but never found her(she was just an image on the web).  It is like breathe play or blood(which I am not too fond of).  Both are very personal.  It is uhhh?  Uhhh a deep expression of commitment.

I am not good at thinking at 4am - some say ever.  But, hope this helps.

Practice and exposure.
When I haven't been playing for a while I'm llike a whimp.
But anyway I like feeling the pain as pain all over again. There's no gold standard imo.

What an amazingly good post. I want to comment on a few points though which I find particularly good.

Precisely what I was saying. The Japanese practitioners as my late sensei taught me, would seek to find their Wa and center themselves in it and thus control all body functions as required.

This just all about focusing on something different such as a memory of something in which you were really happy and trying to use these thoughts to block out the pain.

As part of my healing from Martial Arts Training and injuries, my late Sensei used traditional Japanese medicines which included Acupuncture and in fact had the first laser acupuncture in Australia so he could treat more points than is usually treated in a normal session. I still get regular acupuncture for my osteoarthritis from my GP

One of the problems of chronic pain is that it is hard to accurately diagnose. Too often people are sent to specialists dealing where the pain is being to no avail. The best way is to have a general Practitioner do a whole body examination so that where the patient suffers from pain in one area and the real medical problem is elsewhere. This is known as “Referred Pain”. Psychosomatic pain is another issue which to the suffer, is just as real as if the pain was coming from a genuine injury. I have found that a good therapist working alongside with a GP can remove the psychological problems (with the patient’s help) and thus the pain disappears.
In the past I have often stated that Darkness is my friend for within it’s concealing folds I can operate a successful mission and/or escape. Pain on the other hand is also my friend as it tells me I am still alive and able to feel things. As many sports people have found that pain tells you that you have a problem and where as well as spurring you on to keep going.

i have always been under the strong impression that 'once a wimp always a wimp' but i have been told  this isnt the case.

but it takes time to build up tolerance and i believe a certain amount of technique and experience from the Dominant is required also.

from experience i know that i cant just take a hiding time and again to develop tolerance.  all that i do is tense up and struggle.  i used to think that was how i would always process pain.

there is the pain barrier issue, which is where i get seriously unstuck or have done in the past, but i think thats where experience from youre D comes in.

Pain is a state of mind.

Learning to handle pain more effectively (in a WIITWD context) is something I feel is rather like dancing, you need to develop rhythm, a technique and the right steps. Similarly interaction between D and s in this respect is also like a dance, you have to be aware of each other's cues and rhythm.

Just like dance some people can take to this naturally but others require more effort. Like dance exposure and practice leads to more control and greater ability but this diminishes once the exposure stops.

Also just like dance your mood, emotions and headspace greatly affect your abilities, and just as where sometimes you just cannot catch the rhythm or the steps fall out of place so too it's not always guaranteed that you can handle a certain amount of pain. Nothing you can do here but to give up, walk away and try again some other time.

Hope this analogy helps.

OOOOooooooooooo..... good question.

In every day life I have built up a high pain threshold thanks to live with a condition which can make life pretty sore. The key for me is definately exposure.

As far as BDSM is concerned its a different matter. I find starting off slower and more gently seems to work for me, if you build up to it I can take a higher level of pain. If you jump straight in with the rough stuff I will struggle to take it.
