What I found and this is especially true in the gay community is their over obssesion with the over use of acronyms. There is nothing wrong by keeping it stupidly simple with using identifiers as gay or straight. All other sub groups do fall within those those parameters when "straight" is at one end of the spectrum and "gay" is at the polar opposite: all else falls somewhere in between according to how that specific person views where they believe they fit.

Yes but that does negate some of the activists/activism that went into creating recognition

I agree with having too many long acronyms. In fact I think it would be much simpler if we had just two acronyms.

IM1 and RU12.

It is just a personal dislike of far too many acronyms and ones which are a tad lengthy. I prefer then short and sweet with an obvious meaning such as SCA. I am more inclined to use nicknames such as AK47, H&K 9mm, chopper or huey for example. I do recognise and applaude those who do knock up amazing, and for me uninterpretable acronyms, probably because I have not just never been part of the "smart set", "in crowd" or any such group and have avoided being so other than in a more general sense. This stops neither my deliberately avoidance of most acronyms nor my admiration for some who are deserving of accreditation.

I must ask for a translation of LGBTETC please.

re lgbtect.....ect =excetera, she did not want to spell the whole thing out....

That is the problem with acronyms, they are meant to save time, but when they get to long the opposit happens.

I teach a class called "under the queer umbrella", I love the term queer because just about everything fits into it....and I am lazy.

LGBT..... most get that even though the ladies going first pissed a few off....
ETC....an attitude based on laziness and an inabiity to google? makes many people more aufait with a knitting pattern than what's going on in say BiCon  UK conference here recently.
Not a persoal knock at you IronBear and as I too shy clear of groups and anything but private scenes all I can say it that I am very grateful fpr those who fight the good fight for me and have made my bisexuality not only something normal but something to be proud of....etc.

Well spotted on the etc.
but not that I did not want to spell it out.
It's a pity it has to be spelled though out on a forum like this.

OMG, WTF is the BFD about acronyms? BTW, The LGBTQIA is an organization, they weren't guessing at meanings IMO.

Speaking of Heinlein, the acronym I truly grok is TANSTAFL.

I find excessive use of acronyms to be terribly annoying and absolutely -hate- being overly politically correct.  It's actually gotten to a point where I've become mildly cynical towards the entire thing and while I do try to avoid being offensive, knowing my audience when joking around, being the typical polite Canadian, etc etc, I will get irritated as heck if someone gets worked up and pissy about something that's not worth getting worked up and pissy about.

Hell, I'm a half-Inuit bastard son that's adopted and have gay, lesbian, and bi-sexual friends of various races and backgrounds it's like my social life is an after school special sometimes.
