LillyoftheVally -> What is vanilla? (8/30/2009 2:59:03 PM)

The 'is spanking a fetish' thread has bought up some issues.

My vanilla friend likes spanking, yeah I know vanilla folks involved in kink etc. If those sentences make sense then what the heck is vanilla? See I thought vanilla meant those who didn't engage in anything thought to be BDSM (which in turn kinda means that there are no vanilla people therefore maybe the term is used for those who don't recognise the kink)

Yeah ok it is another define this thread but I thought it was quite interesting.

rideemwet -> RE: What is vanilla? (8/30/2009 3:15:42 PM)

So does the definition have to be exclusive?

If you label somebody as participating in bdsm does that exclude vanilla activities?  If you label someone as vanilla it therefore excludes them participating in bdsm activities?

My feeling is that there's overlap and its a matter of degree, and where you identify.

rideemwet -> RE: What is vanilla? (8/30/2009 3:28:14 PM)

Just for fun, if we take these as absolute definitions, look at it this way -

Parthenophilia: sexual attraction to virgins
Ok, so that probably covers a fair percentage of the male population at least at some point in their life?
Olafactophilia: sexual stimulus with smells or odors
So anyone who wears perfume to be sexy?

So you've now said that better than 50% of the population (to pick a number out of the air) is non-vanilla, and therefore kinky?

lally2 -> RE: What is vanilla? (8/30/2009 3:35:11 PM)

jeeze RS how long did that take or do you know all these 'ilias' off by heart! - and could that be construed as some sort of fetish all its own - impressive anyway and fascinating, thanks.

i thought vanillas were allowed to be mildly kinky, just its a sex thing with them rather than a power exchange thing

sexisubi -> RE: What is vanilla? (8/30/2009 3:35:41 PM)

i always think as nilla as someone that would look down on me when they found out that i liked things that werent considered too bad in bdsm but to them was a terrifying act.

lally2 -> RE: What is vanilla? (8/30/2009 3:42:31 PM)

is spectrophilia for real?? - that has to be one seriously frustrating fetish - i mean how many ghosts has anyone seen in a lifetime and of that number how many were up for a shag.

ResidentSadist -> RE: What is vanilla? (8/30/2009 3:44:12 PM)

DavanKael -> RE: What is vanilla? (8/30/2009 3:50:02 PM)

Great question Lillyofthevalley.
I find that I consider vanialla more a frame of mind; a retrictive (And often judgmental) one.

ResidentSadist: paraphilias are different than just kinks.  Are you proposing that kink is vanilla?

Ohnomasterbill: I think I'm scarred for life after reading that list.
  Davan

mnottertail -> RE: What is vanilla? (8/30/2009 3:51:19 PM)

I choose number 11. The blowjob of your life while wearing a rubber.

Bozo the Clown

Shaggy

i just wasted a minute of my life (that i will never get back) looking for Ohnomasterbill on RS's list of fetishes and trying to imagine what it could possibly be to leave you so scarred.

....... just saying is all. tsk!

edited to add:  yes i am that easily confused and i realise after writing this just how phucking confused i really am.  time for bed i think.

Apocalypso -> RE: What is vanilla? (8/30/2009 4:15:48 PM)

It's a term used to 'prove' that the speaker is cool and hip, not withstanding all the evidence to the contrary.

I am not proposing kink is vanilla. Please elaborate how a paraphilia is different than kink?

windchymes -> RE: What is vanilla? (8/30/2009 4:33:28 PM)

You forgot "Arachibutyrophobia".....fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of your mouth. [:D]

littlewonder -> RE: What is vanilla? (8/30/2009 4:41:44 PM)

Imo there is no such thing as "vanilla"...that or I've never been "vanilla".

I've always dated dominant personality men whether they've heard of bdsm or not.
I've always been submissive to the men I've dated whether they ever heard of bdsm or not.
I've always enjoyed all the stuff we associate with bdsm even with men who have never heard of bdsm and long before I ever heard of bdsm. The men I've been with have always been into something "kinky". I've yet to meet a man who wasn't into something of the sort.

Imo people use the term "vanilla" to make it seem as if they are somehow different or special or set apart from everyone else when imo that just isn't the truth at all.

Arpig -> RE: What is vanilla? (8/30/2009 4:47:48 PM)

I'm pretty much with Apocalypso on this one
