Stephen Colbert is hysterical! :> Well, I own 4 guns in a pretty anti-gun state (I just purchased my 4th and on the paperwork, it came back with a stamp that said 'not declined' or some such silliness and I asked the guy at the show 'wtf' and he told me that the state won't say 'approved' because they don't want to appear to condone gun ownership...they can bite me). I voted for Obama (I would have voted for McCain but pandering to the right-wingers and declaring he was going after Roe vs Wade, I couldn't do it) and wasn't at all concerned about him going after my Constitutional right to bear arms. If he did something to uphold the Constitution in that regard and to make carrying less restrictive, kudos to him. Davan

When I lived in Montana, I dated a girl whose father was a forest ranger. Since I was a recent transplant from Wisconsin, we started talking about the best type of gun to carry in Montana for grizzly bears. The only handgun I owned at the time was a .357, and being a teenager, i didn't have a lot of extra cash to spend on a .44 magnum. I asked him if it made any sense to carry a .357 in grizzly country. He thought about it for a second, and said, "Sure. Just make sure you file the front sight off of the barrel before you head into the woods." I said, "Why the hell would I do that?" "You'll thank me for it later. It won't hurt anywhere near as much when the bear sticks it up your ass." He hooked me up with a good gun dealer who gave me a nice deal on a Ruger .44 magnum.

Were fishing down in pan handle of Florida with a friend when a large bore came at us out the brush, I was armed as was my buddy took 10 rounds put that pig down had mean long tusks. There are a couple bills out that have riders on them for IRS to inventory our weapons and pay a tax on them and another one is to tax ammo purchases very heavy, am retired military, keep in mind first thing a socialist state does is gather up weapons, armed citizens are free men not slaves. Have a concealed weapons permit beats hell out calling 911 when being mugged or robbed

You don't want to fuck with those boars. When i lived in Hawaii, I never went up the country without my .45. They kill you in a particularly unpleasant fashion - they hamstring you with their tusks as you run away from them, and while you're thrashing about on the ground screaming in agony from having your achilles tendons shredded like spaghetti, they gut you at their leisure. They move fast and die hard, though; you want all the firepower you can carry. Large cap magazines are the way to go in boar country.

I count. I ordered my pistol the day after election day and I was and still am very dubious of Obama when it comes to firearms ownership. "I have to ask....are any of you willing to admit that Obama actually did something to uphold your ability to keep and bear arms?" Yes, he did something to uphold my ability to keep and bear arms. "Are any of you willing to admit that our president actually did something of which you and the NRA should applaud?" Nope. Had Obama refused to sign the credit card bill unless they added firearms rider I would applaud. If the Blair Holt Bill makes it to his desk and he vetoes it I will applaud. I'll applaud once he leaves office without tampering with gun owners' rights but I'll be applauding when he leaves office anyway. Are you willing to admit that he signed a bill he wanted passed that had a relatively insignificant firearms rider attached to it?

Do you own any guns? My right to bear arms is absolute. The constitution does not grant me the right to bear arms, it GUARANTEES it. We've allowed government to creep so much into our lives that we've started begging them to tell us what we can or cannot do. That's fucking nuts, it should be the other way around. We the People, not We the Government.

I don't know SoT, it could also be another instance where campaign rhetoric doesn't mirror actions followed through after taking power. Even taking 'action' results don't come. For instance, signing off on the GITMO is one thing - closing it seems to be quite another. I'll admit to surprise if the Administration does anything promised in the campaign. But of course it will be the powerless, filibuster silenced, but very effective, Republican minority sited for blame - right?

Ron.. in all the years I had to go camping/hiking in remote areas with my family, the most dangerous wildlife we EVER ran across was a fmaily of skunks (and that was when we spent a night in Pagosa Springs, CO)

GT, Bears are common and plentiful in a number of areas. But the most dangerous animal out in the back of beyond country is still man. It is a not uncommon practice for marijuana growers to plant on federal property. It is also not uncommon for mobile meth labs (Yes, really. Typically in the back of 24' or larger straight trucks) to "park" in national forests and do their cooking. Now, I'm all for abandoning the war on drugs, but as long as it/they are illegal there will be a real criminal element involved in the production and distribution of such. Personally I was a wilderness guide (not a hunting guide) for several years so I spent a lot of time out in the back country, both professionally and personally. I never went in "heavy." Common sense and good fortune worked in my favor. Uncle Nasty

Where I go camping, they're thicker than flies. One national forest in Northern Wisconsin, I've been going to several times a year my entire life, and I don't recall ever going without seeing at least one bear. The last trip I made, about a month ago, I actually saw more bear than I saw deer. They were everywhere. That's why I tend to take them seriously; bears are very territorial, and when the population is that heavy, you not only encounter a lot of them, but of the ones you encounter, there's a high percentage of young male bears being displaced by older, established bears and roaming around looking for unoccupied areas to take over for themselves. They can be aggressive. It's just not a bad idea to take precautions.
