Actually "food" runs. When you are in Bear country (or you might be), don't act like food.

And you could not possibly out run a bear.

GT,

Bears are common and plentiful in a number of areas.

But the most dangerous animal out in the back of beyond country is still man.

It is a not uncommon practice for marijuana growers to plant on federal property. It is also not uncommon for mobile meth labs (Yes, really. Typically in the back of 24' or larger straight trucks) to "park" in national forests and do their cooking.

I stumbled across a grow op in California just a couple of weeks ago, hiking in the Sierra Madre Mountains. I didn't even realize I was in the middle of it until I saw a piece of buried garden hose sticking up out of the trail. I couldn't think of a single logical reason for anyone to bury a garden hose a mile from the nearest road on some hiking trail in the middle of the Sierra Madres, so the conclusion was obvious. I turned around and got back down the trail. Those Mexican drug gangs will kill you quicker than you can say "good morning". What have they got to lose; they're already committing a felony. They've got nothing to gain by letting you go back down the mountain and spread the word.

If you are not in their vicinity at the time they will stop to check out the cub......run the way you came from, or they would have already had you.......never stand there. bears food doesn't run, they root plants, berries, honey and carrion (same as skunks and pigs and their other relatives).

I agree you can't outrun a bear, and it does no good to climb a tree. Just don't be there when the momma bear is, and that is why I say run instantly. or tuck and drop if she sees you, she WILL CHARGE YOU. Don't try to stare the motherfucker down, they ain't even afraid of your ass, ever.

Two guys are out hiking in the mountains when suddenly, a grizzly bear comes around a bend in the trail, stands up on its hind legs, and roars at them. One guy immediately sits down, opens up his pack, pulls out a pair of running shoes, and starts putting them on. Other guy says, "Are you out of your mind? You can't possibly outrun that bear!" Second guy glances up at him while he's lacing up the shoes and says, "I don't need to outrun the bear. I just need to outrun you."

rightwinghippie -> RE: A Question for the Gun Folks (8/31/2009 9:28:46 AM)

Seriously, if you enounter a bear or cub, do not run. Food runs. Bears do hunt, not just eat carrion. Consult a resepcted local source (like the NAtional Park Service) before you go in bear country if you are not educated about it.

Don't take advice from folks on the net about something like this.

if you encounter a cub, run.
if you encounter an adult bear, don't run.

I absolutely support the right to own and collect fully automatic weapons - pending FFL documentation is in order and ready to be presented for review.

I collect guns, old religious books and coins the same way the filthy rich collect yachts.  None are loaded nor do I believe they could be if I needed to protect myself - I have no bullets.  If I have bullets by the time I located them at the bottom of the junk drawer(you know that drawer, right) I would be dead.  I think I would rather get shot anyhow than knowing I shot someone.  I do not even like sport hunting, it is mean.  Leave Bambie the heck alone, the meat is too spicy anyhow.

Although not pleased to admit many I people I grew up with were 'pro-active' racist nazi's.  They were best friends and 'supported' me.  They are friends no longer and do know how differently I feel.  However, I still do maintain contact with some(on occasion) we have 15 years rapport in some cases.  So, I heard first hand about this "Vile non-Caucasian(insert slang) presidential candidate".  It was so obvious(to them) what he was going to do to the country their great great grand pappy fought for.  One of the first thing he was going to do was take their god damn guns.

Honestly someone probably should take theirs.  Then with that same authority(legal action) if necessary or wanted they could take mine.  Although I would bitch about it here I would most likely live.  Here, here sir.....  I heard the arguments first hand.

If no rational argument exists against an opponent of opposing view invent them and spread then repeat.

Were fishing down in pan handle of Florida with a friend when a large bore came at us out the brush, I was armed as was my buddy took 10 rounds put that pig down had mean long tusks. There are a couple bills out that have riders on them for IRS to inventory our weapons and pay a tax on them and another one is to tax ammo purchases very heavy, am retired military, keep in mind first thing a socialist state does is gather up weapons, armed citizens are free men not slaves. Have a concealed weapons permit beats hell out calling 911 when being mugged or robbed

I sometimes get to the point when I want to shoot a bore too.

Do you own any guns?

My right to bear arms is absolute.  The constitution does not grant me the right to bear arms, it GUARANTEES it.  We've allowed government to creep so much into our lives that we've started begging them to tell us what we can or cannot do.

That's fucking nuts, it should be the other way around. We the People, not We the Government.

Is your right to free speech absolute or are you bound by libel and slander laws?

Why is the right to bear arms any different?  There are already limitations imposed.

I don't own a gun. I have backpacked often and have been visited by a few bears.

All I needed was simple common sense.

Sure, and far more often than not, that works fine. Except for a couple of years in Hawaii, I've spent my whole life in bear country, and I spend huge amounts of time in the backcountry. I've gotten within 20 yards of bears on a regular basis, without them knowing I'm there, and never felt any fear at all. In all those years, I have yet to be devoured, even a single time.

But shit still happens. People using common sense are sometimes attacked, too. As an example... I had a very close encounter with a bear a couple of months ago. I was camping in a national forest, and the dumpster was only about 40 yards from my tent. A bear decided to go dumpster diving, and I figured I didn't particularly want a garbage-eating bear roaming around my tent all night, and scared him away from a safe distance. After I bounced a few rocks off the side of the dumpster, he got the message, and I didn't hear from him again that night. All worked out fine; no problem.

But a few days later, when I got back to the Cities, I saw on the news that just 30 miles from where I was camping - and at pretty much the same moment that I was driving my bear away from the dumpster - a woman in  Siren, Wisconsin was attacked by a bear while taking  out the garbage. She just walked out into her yard in the twilight, and a bear came out of the woods between the house and the garage and pounced her. She survived by playing dead, but she was torn up a bit, and quite badly rattled by the event.

So you never know. Shit happens. They're wild animals. If you spend a lot of time in the area where they live, the chances that they're going to do some sort of wild-animal shit to you increases. Still extremely unlikely, but as long as there's a chance, why not take measures to improve your odds? You carry a poncho for when it rains, mosquito repellent for when it mosquitoes - why not a gun for when it bears? It's just a gun. I can't imagine any good reason for not taking one if you're in bear country.

Panda,

Because the risk is very small if proper precautions are taken.

Hell, I run a FAR greater risk from hypothermia or an accident (for which I also prepare, but yes, shit happens). If I started buying stuff just in case, I'd start with a cell phone and a GPS. A gun would just be one more thing to care for and to carry--not a mention potentially dangerous in its own right.

For even better safety? Stay home.

No thanks. I believe in safety and sensible precautions, but not fear over every conceivable possibility. As far as wildlife, a rapid raccoon would be far more dangerous.

I run a far greater risk of dying while driving to work each day.

Live well.

Tal Tim,

as would the fleet of foot fox, the rafting rabbit (think Jimmy Carter) and that ilk, I should imagine.

And it should go without saying, beware the frumious bandersnatch.

Your Rabid Friend,
Ron

I am 100% in favor of everyone's absolute right to bear arms.  My problem is when the radicals insist they have the right to arm bears.

Dammit, I'd hate to be camping and have Yogi & Boo Boo show up with colts & magnums....

mnottertail -> RE: A Question for the Gun Folks (8/31/2009 4:43:15 PM)

Hey, Boo Boo------let's go steal some pick-a-nic baskets!!!
But Yogi, what about the Rangers?
Fuck the Rangers, Boo Boo.......

Does that mean someone who committed a crime with a gun is still guarenteed the right to bare arms? a guarentee is just that... constitutional... unable to be taken away... except by the government... like the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness... those are guarenteed as well... until you are incarcerated.

Musicmystery -> RE: A Question for the Gun Folks (8/31/2009 7:27:56 PM)

No, but all hikers have the right to bear arms.

[;)]

[Damn! Do you see how fast that raccoon was going?]

SpinnerofTales -> RE: A Question for the Gun Folks (8/31/2009 8:24:04 PM)

You know, the way this thread has been going, it seems like the question is not "should we bear arms". Its "Should we arm bears"

Damn..I just looked up a few posts and found myself co-opted jokewise
