I'm seriously considering a Mac the nest time I buy.

I'm seriously getting more in line with this every day.

I got an ibook for 220 with shipping. It only has 512RAM but I could upgrade it. But Im not a big gamer.

For the UM, you might consider a netbook (unless said UM is also a big gamer). I have an Acer Aspire One that I bought as my travel computer, after lugging my 7lb, PIA to travel with, full sized HP laptop up to Mercnbeth's a couple of times. The Acer is REALLY packable, and fits in my purse. It weighs 2.2lbs, has a 9" screen, 1G of RAM and a 160G hard drive. It also comes with XP instead of Vista (bonus!) I paid $300 for mine brand new. One drawback is that it doesn't have a CD/DVD drive, but it would be easy to add an external.

I love my Mac [:)]

subtlebutterfly -> RE: What computer should I get... (8/31/2009 1:49:14 AM)

FR I hate Dell..well mostly 'cause of their customer service which is relatively none..love HP and I prefer their pc's to dell too anyway, I disagree that they're the same.

My pc's probably going to die soon 'cause it's 4 years old and my pc's dont usually last much longer[8D] so the next one I'm getting is a mac............
however I think I'll always need a pc in my home and aint interested in having a dual OS on the mac so...um..I guess I'll buy a mac as long as I have a pc too..[8|] at least try n maybe I'll end up hating mac..who knows.

oh and did I mention - I love my vistaaaa I wouldn't get XP again for the life of mine...but then windows 7 is almost out in a month or two..can't wait[:D]

One word... MAC!

Aileen1968 -> RE: What computer should I get... (8/31/2009 5:51:29 AM)

Get a mac.

MsFlutter -> RE: What computer should I get... (8/31/2009 6:06:00 AM)

Macs <spit>. I've hated Macs forever. They are good for 3 things: desktop publishing/graphics, boat anchors and they are a reliable platform for Chinese Mandarin.

I've built my last 4 'puters (each new one only because I wanted bigger/better/faster - not because what I built died.) The most recent has a 3.16 Wolfdale processor, 6Gb RAM and a video card that has its own cooling system in a 'quiet' Antec case.

Manufacturer-configured systems dog out quickly and are loaded with all the usual suspects of 'crapware.' Nothing like a custom machine with all the bells and whistles you can think of running only the software YOU want.  :)

Really depends on your needs.

LaTigresse -> RE: What computer should I get... (8/31/2009 2:37:29 PM)

That is what I was going to say.

I've got a little Dell laptop I've had for years that hasn't given me a bit of trouble. My sister got a HP a few years ago and it seems to spend more time in the shop that out. We use Mac here at work and I would love to have one but I refuse to spend that kind of money on a disposable electronic toy.

My next computer will definitely be a Mac...I didn't get one three years ago because I had a Dell that died and had no problems till the end so I bought another Dell......but I used to work on a Mac at work when they first came out and never had problems with it and shied away from getting one at home at the time because the lack of software for them at the time..but next time I will just drive about one mile away and buy a Mac..even if it costs more...Like a few others have said about Dell service, I had a really bad experience last time I talked to a Dell technician as they mostly send you to automatons in India...well once they did send me to the East Coast for some reason and it worked out good..but you have to weave through some labyrinth I was able to get to the end once but not a few other times...LOL

Just make sure to get MACWORD with it. If you do you'll have no problems opening the files sent to you in word and also can open them on a PC even if written with the MAcword.

Lushy jogged my memory - check out OpenOffice for a  freesuite of applications that look and act very much like The Other Office Suite many of us paid $$$ for.  I checked the Download center and they have two different Mac versions.

I downloaded open office for one of my laptops. Just want to warn you, you can open any file. But when you attach a file to a document even when selecting to send it in word or rich text,  often others can not open the file. I dont know if this is a problem with the Mac version.

I want an Aileen. What! She is not a computer. A custom cumputer would be better if you can afford one.

i very much agree MsFlutter, building a pc from an empty case is so much better. Once upon a time it was actually cheaper to build your own, not sure if that is still the case but i can't imagine buying somebody else's suggestion of what i need in a pc.

ShaharThorne -> RE: What computer should I get... (9/1/2009 12:20:19 PM)

The UM and I are still working on her computer (realised its a Linksys error, hence a new router is needed) and she makes amvs on youtube. She (the household) will still get a new computer because her father is using a bad ME model he got at a garage sale for $50 (told him that ME were POS).

I am thinking of the Dell XPS since it has an extra coolant for the cpu (38 degrees compared to 74 degrees on a regular computer). It also has a 1024 graphics card and I am looking into satellite internet so I can keep the warranty in shape. I can still get XP or XP Pro installed on the computer as part of the upgrade.

I can't deal with Macs. The keys are too stiff and the keyboard is not ergomonic enough for me (CTS). Besides I had government training on PCs, not Macs.

ShaharThorne -> RE: What computer should I get... (9/8/2009 6:09:25 PM)

I have been designing my computer over at dell for a day or two and this is what I have come up with on the cheap model. The second computer for my UM's father I can pick up at the goodwill store where they sell refurbished models.
