Anyone ever had to talk to a psychiatrist about BDSM? Someone has told me that admitting to being a masochist gives you a quick trip to a padded room.

i believe there are kink friendly Psychiatrists. I remember somewhere there was a listing. I believe if you google your area with Kink friendly therapist/counselors, you'll find one.

I saw a list like that a while ago. Unfortunately I don't have much of a choice as to who i see though.

When I was going through cancer treatment I was referred to a psychologist who dealt specifically with cancer patients.  One of the topics that came up repeatedly during my therapy was BDSM and my desire to submit.  She was very open-minded and tolerant of what I told her.  She always harbored a safe environment where I felt comfortable divulging my most guarded thoughts.

I don't believe the rumor you've heard is true unless the therapist feels that you're doing yourself such an extensive amount of harm that it is her duty to intervene.

MissCake -> RE: Dealing with a psychiatrist (9/1/2009 8:22:49 PM)

Where does a desire for pain and submission become a desire for self harm?  I am sure this is a notion that many of us have pondered, and psychiatrists and therapists are no different.  Allow your therapist to keep an open mind, but keep one yourself too.

Very few things will earn anyone an inpatient stay.

I can refer you to a good therapist near me who specializes in sexual health, and she may know of a therapist in your area.  Send me an e-mail.

Nah, just another urban myth.
Psychiatrists hear even more kinky stuff than psychologists; you might even bore them. They should, and appropriately, ensure you have no other self-esteem or abuse issues, just as they should ensure a dom isn't literally a sadistic sociopath.
Telling psych the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth without their having to ask will allow them to help you faster.

GreedyTop -> RE: Dealing with a psychiatrist (9/1/2009 9:59:22 PM)

If you have any kind of choice about who you see, interview the psychiatrist.  Ask them how they feel about alternative lifestyles/sexuality.  (I'm guessing you are limited by insurance HMO kinda stuff?).

If possible, check into kink friendly psychs that work on a sliding scale, too, if the insurance is an issue...

chellekitty -> RE: Dealing with a psychiatrist (9/1/2009 10:43:35 PM)

three things will get you an inpatient stay - threatening/attempting to kill yourself, threatening to kill another person, and hallucinations...not even threatening to hurt yourself or another person will get you an inpatient stay...i've tried...at least not at the private hospital...and they are more liberal with their admissions...

as for psychiatrists - who are the medical doctors that administer medicine - they are more likely to want you to see a psychologist - who are the PhD's who do talk therapy - i've gotten a range of reactions, from that's a clinical disorder that we need to "take care of" to as long as you are "safe" about what you are doing...Counselors and Therapists are both typically Master's levels but counselors usually are Licenced Professional/Pastoral Counselors (LPCs) and therapists usually are Licenced Clinical Social Workers (LCSW)....insurances that i have dealt with are more likely to pay for an Counselor...

Psychiatrists typically only see you for 30 minutes or less at 100 to 200 a session, maybe more if you have good insurance, everyone else usually one hour at a downward scale starting at the highest i've seen at 150 for a psychologist and down to 60 for a therapist

Nonsense.
You're employing the psych aren't you?
Then go employ one you trust.

Thank god for the NHS.

Worse if you say you're normal....

angelikaJ -> RE: Dealing with a psychiatrist (9/2/2009 5:37:56 AM)

There was a time when being a masochist (or a sadist) in and of itself was considered to be a psychiatric disorder.
It isn't viewed that way anymore.

Oh yes, that's right - but that's the higher knowledge.
There are still enough black sheep out there who don't know this yet. The problem is that it's (almost) not possible to be *understood* by *normal* people, because we are quite different - what doesn't mean that's bad anyway. Anyway a good therapist can *tolerate* this as set part of your character and not as a psychiatric disorder.

But I guess that a session with a psyiatrist won't go that deep. - A while ago my girl needed new medics and went to a psychiatrist. Some basic questions, not even a proof of assisting therapy, and fifteen minutes later she's got her antidepressant reciepe.
Well, that's a scary story about a case here in Germany. - But as chellekitty has pointed out, a psychiatrist is usually not the person for talking-therapy.

But if you should end up in such a therapy (what is usually good; even assisting to whatever they prescribe you) and if BDSM may be important for your problem, there should be room for that. Just don't go straight to the point and try to get to know his attitude about this. If you don't feel good talking with him about this or if he even blocks this topic, there *should* be the option to exchange the therapist, because the therapy-success is endangered.
In Germany the health insurance doesn't link the therapy to the therapist and I believe that you have this option as well. I've already seen therapist-changings here; there's no big deal about it.

So all in all you don't need to worry about this. Just give it a try - usually it should be okay.

curiouskitten8 -> RE: Dealing with a psychiatrist (9/2/2009 6:40:40 AM)

Great news, thanks for your responses. I guess I'm not sooooooo worried now.
Hopefully the psychiatrist and of psychologist i get sent to,  is understanding and open minded. The reason I asked, my family is insisting I see a psychiatrist after they found my CM account in the history (stupid me). Anyways, they think I'm seriously disturbed and all that fun stuff and I guess they'd rather pay someone to deal with me.

gentlemanprince -> RE: Dealing with a psychiatrist (9/2/2009 6:58:34 AM)

There is a group on Fetlife which deals with this issue. The group moderator is a psychologiest.

IronBear -> RE: Dealing with a psychiatrist (9/2/2009 7:00:33 AM)

The last time I discussed BDSM with a Psychiatrist was in court giving evidence for a client/patient of mine whose Mother and per Psychiatrist wanted to have her committed because of her (client/patient) But Plug Fetish. Result was that the girl was to have therapy with me for a predetermined period and both the Mother and pet Psychiatrist were banned from having contact with her (client/patient). I'd say it was a good out come especially seeing the the problem was her mood swings and lack of adequate control of her temper, both now well sorted out and the girl is doing famously.

gentlemanprince -> RE: Dealing with a psychiatrist (9/2/2009 7:01:19 AM)

By the way, you should know that there is a real difference between a psychiastrist and a psychologist. Generally, psychiatrists are medical doctors who get about six months training in psych drugs. Most of them have little training in therapy. If you have kink issue, you would be better off looking for a psychologist.

curiouskitten8 -> RE: Dealing with a psychiatrist (9/2/2009 7:02:47 AM)

I know the difference :) I think I'm going to end up seeing both.
