The Catholic church has and probably always will be about POWER.  They have had absolute power for so long and people were rightly afraid to say anything about the abuses of that power.  These things that priests were (and are) doing arent new.  they have been happening for hundreds of years.  Just recently,  people have been able to make these allegations without a genuine fear of death or imprisonment on trumped up charges.  Im for dismantling the whole kit and caboodle but it wont happen in our lifetime.

That article about a BBC TV documentary was published three years ago, so it wouldn't have covered the report published in May this year here in Ireland about some quite disgusting abuse by priests. The key report, published on May 20th 2009, was a government investigation into its own services to discover why they didn't stop the abuse in church run childrens' homes. My understanding is that prosecutions are still pending. Google "Christian Brothers" and "abuse" for stories on the matter.

What the report shows is the collusion in such crimes goes beyond the church. Notifying the police of abuse doesn't do much good if the authorities in the area are involved.
